In recent press reports, H M Inspector of Constabulary suggests that police officers use e-mail or text messaging to keep in touch with the public. What's the problem with simply stopping and speaking to people, or has the art of conversation disappeared?

No, but the art of letter writing has....

I suppose Mr McDonald would want the police not to phone people but to drive to their door to give them information...maybe writing a letter is too impersonal?
