SCOTLAND on Sunday rightly identifies 'legacy' as the principal reason behind the Scottish Government's request for additional Lottery funding for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games ('Lottery told: give us £150m for 2014 Games', August 31).
Increased Lottery funding for the 2014 legacy is to be welcomed for the improvement of major sporting facilities to encourage greater numbers of Scots to participate in physical activity, as well as the regeneration of deprived urban areas.

The success of these initiatives, however, will firmly depend on effective involvement of local communities. Alongside his support for a new velodrome for Edinburgh, triple gold medal winning Olympian Chris Hoy has called for 'meaningful' cycle paths to encourage people to travel in an active way within their communities.

Investment in paths for cycling and walking, alongside sustained promotion of their use, would link communities to their workplaces, shops, sporting facilities and the surrounding countryside. Such investment can play a key role in urban regeneration.
