Political self-interest

Dr Neil Hudson (Letters, 13 May) is right that a referendum on independence should not be used to play political games, but who is playing the games? It seems to me Labour's sudden conversion to a referendum is not because it has discovered its democratic credentials – this is about political survival and self-interest. The SNP, on the other hand, wants to give people the information they need to make a decision about independence.
It will be interesting to see how Labour behaves when the referendum does arrive. I think people are fed up of being told that we, as a country, are too small, too poor and too stupid to run our own affairs. They are starting to see through the lies they have been told by generations of unionist politicians, more interested in their London careers than in the people of Scotland.
