Perhaps the worst feature of the riots in Manchester was the return of the chants "UDF, UDF...".
With the Church of Scotland in assembly this week, never was there a better moment to press them to publicly condemn all such connections with terrorism. They and the Roman Catholic Church did little of this during the period of the Troubles.

Now is the moment for our national Church to step in and roundly condemn any violence, in particular that perpetrated last week. It is surely their responsibility.

Strange letter. I think it can be taken as read that the COS would roundly condemn the despicable actions of rampaging thugs masquerading as football fans screaming sectarian chants at the police.

Taken as read means nothing...
If the church wants to be seen as relevant and capable it should make it's view on current events known. However its silence either means that it has no views, it lacks the guts to expouse them or it knows that it does not do them any good to express them as most people don't care or wish they would just keep quiet...

#2. I'm not defending the Church's actions (or inactions)-I am an atheist who doesn't really care what they think, however I was just commenting on the curiousity that a letter writer should pick on this one group (representing the views of 10-15% of the population of Scotland for a lead on condemnation. I don't think Lothian and Borders Police, or Strathclyde police (more relevently) have issued statements condemning the Rangers fans in Manchester either.

The Church of Scotland does not need to publicly condemn all wrong actions. That the violence in Manchester was wrong is obvious and does not require to be stated. The Church of Scotland should ignore it. That there is a link between the violence and expressed (whether or not sincerely) support for a terrorist is a speculative claim that people might make but the Church of Scotland should pay no attention to.

To preach the gospel and to worship God should be the central aims of the Church of Scotland. If the majority of Scots find this irrelevant, that is their business.
