Jets are no intrusion

May I counter Alasdair MacPherson's complaint about Leuchars Air Base (Letters, 8 July)? As a patriotic Scot who chose three years ago to retire to St Andrews, I welcome the air base's contribution to the defence of these islands, not least in view of the increased activity in the North Sea of a revived KGBistan, and am surprised at how seldom it intrudes on our ear-drums.
Presumably, had Mr MacPherson lived near Biggin Hill in 1940, he would also have objected to his peace being disturbed.
