What have folk like Mary Rolls (Letters, 4 July) done that they are ashamed of their own identities? I am proud of mine, and I have not the slightest qualm about carrying proof of it.

What carrying an identity card means is that the State disbelieves you until you produce the evidence, so you become beholden to the State and not the reverse.

Anyway, the top crooks will pay to have forged ID made, so only the innocent will needless carry such accurate identification.

Perhaps we should all have a unique number tatooed on us at birth, #1, but that would smack of "Arbeit macht frei".
