HEADLINE: National Express taken back into public ownership (your report, 2 July). My response: at last! The giveaway of British Rail to the private sector by the Tories was one of the great scandals of their government and rail passengers should be cheering that one lot of fat cats have been dumped.

Did the Tories under William Hague not admit that the privatisation of the railways was a disaster? The blame for the railway fiasco has to lie with Labour for not automatically re-nationalising it on Day 1 of their tenure. They have propped up this disasterous system and squandered the opportunity to fix the whole thing - or at least make it a lot better by re-creating BR.
