BBC bias against the English

THE BBC's response to Professor Anthony King's criticism that its journalists pass off English stories as 'British' was to point out, correctly, that the Government, led by Gordon Brown, does exactly the same thing ('Tartan enforcers target BBC bias', July 13).
Brown and other members of his Government use the term 'this country' to describe policies that only apply to England. One would not know, for example, that an item about the NHS applies only to England. It is not just that the BBC does not give enough attention to the devolved nations but also that both the BBC and the Government try to avoid reminding the English that they are, well, English. They are worried that the English might realise they too are a nation and a nation without its own government.

Viewers and listeners in England will be only too pleased if as a result of Professor King's report both the Government and the BBC start to come clean about what applies to England and what doesn't. Some people in England have been complaining about the BBC's institutional anti-Englishness and its British bias for years. It takes the Scottish mafia to get something done.

Ian Campbell, West Horsley, Surrey

If there's any genuine confusion, it's the result of 300 years of the presumption that England = Britain.

Never mind England? Will the BBC also continue to ignore Cornwall in it's news reports?

The people of Cornwall do not want to listen to all these parochial news reports about what is happening the length and breadth of England when so much is happening across the county from Penzance to Saltash!

This anti-Cornish bias must stop and the BBC must provide balanced coverage? The sooner Cornwall becomes an independent county like England the better!

Unfortunate that he has to spoil a good letter by using the bigoted term "Scottish mafia".

I expect he's being ironic.

It's true that the BBC constantly refers to "the NHS" without making it clear that a report or a proposal only relates to England, or in some cases only England and Wales.

And it's also true that most BBC editors and journalists and presenters, even those who are themselves English by descent, very obviously loath and despise the English.

You can see it not only from the bias in their reports, but also from the different facial expressions and intonations of news presenters when they utter these words:

1. "Scottish nationalists", or "Welsh nationalists", or "Irish nationalists"

2. "English nationalists".

It's no excuse that they're just doing the same as scumbag Labour politicians.
