IT IS the greatest moment in an athlete's career: standing on the winner's podium, gold medal around the neck, with the national anthem resonating around the stadium.
Now, amid a continuing debate about which tune best represents Scotland, Commonwealth Games officials have decided to give the athletes themselves the power to decide on the nation's anthem for the 2010 Games in Delhi.

With the Scottish Parliament failing to declare an official anthem, Team Scotland organisers have decided the fairest way is to put it to a vote.

Your choice? An anthem for Scotland – which song would YOU choose? Vote for your favourite here

A shortlist of four contenders – Scotland the Brave, Flower of Scotland, Loch Lomond and Highland Cathedral – will be put to an audience of athletes and dignitaries at the annual Commonwealth Games Awards dinner on Saturday night.

In an X Factor-style vote, they will reduce the shortlist to two. The athletes will be given the final say at their team camp in January.

Commonwealth Games Scotland chairman Michael Cavanagh called on MSPs to make a final declaration on an anthem in plenty of time for the Glasgow games in 2014.

He said: "Hopefully, by the time we reach the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow there will be an official anthem that is nationally recognised and endorsed through our parliament and one that the whole of Scotland can unite behind on what will be a fabulous and memorable occasion."

The debate over which anthem to choose has already begun among athletes.

Swimming champion Gregor Tait, who won double gold in the 2006 Games in Melbourne, backed the decision to let the athletes decide. He said: "Hearing the anthem in Melbourne was one of the proudest moments of my life.

"To see the flag being raised to Scotland the Brave really made me feel Scottish and proud.

"It was great to see everyone's reaction to the anthem and see people clapping along really made me smile. Without these moments, Melbourne would not have been so memorable.

"Whatever anthem is chosen this time, it must evoke those same feelings."

With no official Scottish anthem, it is up to individual sporting organisations to select the anthem which best reflects their endeavours. For the Commonwealth Games, the anthem is used at the flag-raising ceremony to announce the arrival of Team Scotland and for the victory ceremonies.

The lack of a single recognised anthem used across all sports has led to a plethora of unofficial tunes being used over the years, depending on the taste of each organisation and often creating confusion among athletes, team members, spectators and viewers.

Until 1958, Robert Burns's Scots Wha Hae was used to mark Commonwealth Games success. This was then replaced by Scotland the Brave.

The other home nations have already cleared up the issue of national anthems, with none of them using the UK anthem God Save the Queen.

England's team has chosen Land of Hope and Glory, the Welsh will sing Land of my Fathers and the Northern Irish national song will be Danny Boy.

From that list, I would have to choose Flower of Scotland if only because most Scots can at least sing the chorus. However, I would like to have seen 'Scot's wa hae' in contention too. If a Scot's athlete wins something could we tie Rufus to the halliard by the neck and run him up the flagpole? A service to humanity.

"Keep right on to the end of the road!" - Another cracking Harry Lauder song and so appropriate for runners.

I trust that the Queen of Scotland will open these Games and that the National Anthem will be played. The Melbourne Games were shamed by the discourteous organisers refusing to play the National Anthem when the Queen of Australia opened the 2006 Games.

If the are going to vote on an anthem that the whole of Scotland can be behind and make them feel proud of who they are, why aren't they giving the vote to the whole of Scotland and not just a hand full of people. We all now the English don't want us to have the Flower of Scotland and if they didn't then why are we voting on something that has been played in sports for years. The few are easier to push in one direction than a nation, and having an anthem that tells the English we will put them back in their place just doesn't sit well down south.

There is no Queen of Scotland. Do you mean the Queen of Scots? Unlikely that the anti Jacobite dirge 'God save the Queen' will be played when our athletes hopefully win lots of medals.

Maybe the most important scottish story in The Scotsman today.
As Scotland is fast moving towards being an independent nation within the British Isles once more , shouldn't we be composing a new national anthem for new times as yet un-pronounced ?
Dick Gaughan brought " Both Sides of the Tweed " into the mainstream folk music genre again, has there been any suggestion for a song in the spirit of our acceptance of and by all our old direct neighbours, a celebration of our affiliation with all cultures of Britain and a homage to the prominent cultures within?
A modern lyric to quell perceived friction or resistance which would detract from an onward and upward communication of a nation. A modern composition which would not mind being sacrificed on the pyre of National Anthemic intentions as its form would be as indestructable as The Declaration Of Arbroath, a springboard for it's pronounced new relationship with this large globe.
For to say such a thing was in safe hands would allay any need for expected miserable imposters to surface.
It would only be right that Flower Of Scotland burns at it's feet .

Correction - we English don't give a sh#t. How can you aspire to independence when you always have to blame the big boy down the road for your inability to do anything. We want you to get independence and stay in the EU, then we can trade across the border to the benefit of both our countries when England leaves the new soviet union.

Badly-researched story in respect of the final paragraph - for as long as I can remember, England, Northern Ireland and Wales have used the same three "anthems".

In fact, the night in Auckland when, after the tape broke, the New Zealand announcer, born of Irish parents, sang Danny Boy after an Irish boxer won a Commonwealth gold medal - that was spine-tinglingly emotional. Not a dry eye in the hall.

Bob Dylan When The Ship Comes In Lyrics

Oh the time will come up
When the winds will stop
And the breeze will cease to be breathin'
Like the stillness in the wind
'Fore the hurricane begins
The hours when the ship comes in.

And the seas will split
And the ship will hit
And the sands on the shoreline will be shaking
Then the tide will sound
And the wind will pound
And the morning will be breaking.

Oh the fishes will laugh
As they swim out of the path
And the seagulls they'll be smiling
And the rocks on the sand
Will proudly stand
The hour that the ship comes in.

And the words that are used
For to get the ship confused
Will not be understood as they're spoken
For the chains of the sea
Will have busted in the night
And will be buried at the bottom of the ocean.

A song will lift
As the mainsail shifts
And the boat drifts on to the shoreline
And the sun will respect
Every face on the deck
The hour that the ship comes in.

Then the sands will roll
Out a carpet of gold
For your weary toes to be a-touchin'
And the ship's wise men
Will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watchin'.

Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin'
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal
And know that it's for real
The hour that the ship comes in.

Then they'll raise their hands
Sayin' we'll meet all your demands
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered
And like Pharaoh's tribe
They'll be drownded in the tide
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered

we were shakin up
we were breakin up
we were rockin to the shang-a-lang sound of the music

HEY HEY, rockin to the music.
HEY HEY, rocking to the music
rocking every night and day.HEY HEY

well we sang shang-a-lang as we ran with the gang
doin doo wop be dooby do ay
we were all in the news
with our blue suede shoes
and our dancin the night away.

we sang shang-a-lang
as we ran with the gang
doin doo wop be dooby do eye
with the jukebox playing and every body saying that
music like ours couldn't die

we were grooving
we were movin
pussyfootin and booting it round.
we were boppin it
we were hoppin it
we were jumping to the shang-a-lang sound of the music,....*CHORUS

“Flower of Scotland” comfortably won the recent on-line contest run by the SNO and is the favoured anthem of both football and rugby fans.

“Highland Cathedral” is a pleasant enough tune, albeit penned by two Germans, but does anyone know the lyrics?

“Scotland the Brave” with the Cliff Hanley lyrics only ever seems to be accompanied by clapping and again, no-one seems to know the words.

“Loch Lomond” particularly the Run Rig version with the Gaelic intervention, is a popular half-time sing-a-long at Hampden, but perhaps as it is aimed primarily at the Diaspora would be inappropriate as a national anthem.

Therefore, the Roy Williamson penned song wins by a lang Scots mile.

An anthem not making you want to stand up to sing it isn’t an anthem. The music or the word individually should still have the same effect. The Flower of Scotland doesn’t qualify by this test, imo.

Celebrate with Loch Lomond. a Lament!

There are many interpretations of this song, the most common is that two of Bonnie Prince Charlie's men were captured and left behind in Carlisle after the failed rising of 1745. One of the young soldiers was to be executed, the other released. The Spirit of the dead soldier travelling by the 'low road' would reach Scotland before his comrade, who would be struggling along the actual road over high, rugged country

Good to hear people putting forward an opinion on the anthem. Not all will be pleased with whatever is finally decided so let's get the show on the road, get it chosen and move right along with getting independence sorted and making Scotland the place that invented the modern world, yet again.

I personally favour Flower of Scotland simply because I feel it best stirs the blood as anthems should do (similar to Wales and the French). Some out there would put you to sleep!

What I find interesting is that God Save the Queen has something about "all rebellious Scots to crush...." does it not? And some people are worried about offending southern neighbours with the lyrics of Flower ???? Hardly a concern about anything!

Meanwhile, the world waits to see if Scotland is up to being an independent nation ... and 2014 draws nearer.
