Wall-to-wall celebrations as Olympic fever grips China

Published Date: 08 August 2008
AS DOVES flew into the misty sky and confetti rained down on to one of the world's great icons, Olympic fever could truly be said to have arrived in China.

On the Great Wall thousands of yellow-clad volunteers, snaking away as far as the eye could see, danced and waved flags as part of the second day of the torch's tour round Beijing.

The spectacular ceremony, which saw streams of confetti shot into the air, was staged on the eve of what promises to be the most spectacular opening ceremony in Olympic history.

The troubled 130-day torch relay will end finally today at the ceremony in the spectacular Bird's Nest stadium, footage of which will be beamed to an estimated one billion television viewers around the world.

Weng Chengyu, a 28-year-old student watching yesterday's torch parade on the Great Wall, summed up the feelings of many of those at the festivities.

He said: "There have been problems with the torch, but now is the time for the party.

"You see all this?" he said, as patriotic music blared out from loudspeakers, echoing around the wall, as drums and cymbals thundered out a pounding beat. "This shows how much the Chinese love the Olympics."

Xiaohong Lu, who has accompanied the relay around the world, added: "We have travelled to so many cities from Olympia to the Great Wall, we have cried so many times.

"It is very emotional, especially when you see the reaction of the Chinese crowds."

Beijing has ramped up security ahead of the Games, with missile launchers guarding the main venues and a special 100,000-strong security force on alert for both terrorists and human rights protesters.

But with the haze cutting visibility down to around a mile in the city, Beijing's polluted air took centre stage again as the most pressing problem facing the organisers of the Games.

Beijing's air pollution index was yesterday recorded at 96, which came close to exceeding the national level for acceptable air. Levels between 51-100 are considered moderate pollution, and anything over 100 is harmful to sensitive groups, including children and the elderly.

But Jacques Rogge, the head of the International Olympic Committee, praised Beijing's "extraordinary" efforts to cut pollution.

He said there was "absolutely no danger" to the health of athletes taking part in events that last less than one hour, but he said if the pollution was bad, events which lasted more than that could be shifted or postponed.

August is thunderstorm season in Beijing, and organisers have talked of using experimental technology to "seed" rain clouds to ensure it stays dry for today's opening. However, it is forecast that this will not be needed, although some scattered rain is possible.

A spokesman for the China Meteorological Administration said: "During the opening ceremony it will mainly be cloudy."

Meanwhile, Mr Rogge insisted athletes would be prevented from staging any political protests at official venues – in accordance with Rule 51 of the Olympic charter, which forbids athletes from making political, religious, commercial or racial statements.

But he said they were free to do this in protest areas provided by the Chinese authorities, and that "common sense" would be used to judge violations.

Mr Rogge pledged the Beijing Games would show the world "the real China". He said: "Not only are the Chinese addressing the world, but they are addressing 1.3 billion people in their own country, and I think we will see the real China.

"I think this will mean a lot for the perception of China. The rest of the world

will find a country with 5,000 years of history, a fascinating country. I believe the spotlight on China will help the world to understand China, and it will also help China to understand the world."

Heroes' welcome for Britons after pro-Tibet protest

TWO Britons arrested in China for unfurling pro-Tibet banners outside the Olympic Stadium in Beijing were given a rousing welcome after arriving back in the UK yesterday.

Iain Thom, 24, from Edinburgh, and Lucy Fairbrother, 23, from Cambridge, returned to cheers after being ordered out of China for staging the demonstration just hours before the Olympic Torch was due to arrive in Tiananmen Square.

Mr Thom scaled a 120ft pylon with Phil Bartell, one of two American protesters who also took part in the stunt. Police called in fire trucks with ladders to try to reach the pair, who eventually descended peacefully as crowds gathered. All four were ordered out after Wednesday's protest.

After arriving back at London City Airport, to a scrum of supporters, family members and media, Mr Thom said it had been easy to scale the pylon because climbing was a hobby.

He added: "It was not difficult to get through the security as we had been planning this for four years.

"We wanted to make a call to world leaders and the Chinese government for meaningful change. We knew there were risks, but they were nothing compared to the suffering Tibetans have endured."

Ms Fairbrother said: "We are only a very small part of this campaign and the ongoing struggle. We'll carry on fighting and there will be more protests during the Olympics."

President's speech on rights raises tensions

US PRESIDENT George Bush arrived in Beijing amid mounting tension after expressing "deep concerns" over China's human rights record.

In a speech in Thailand on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Olympics, he talked of his "firm opposition" to detention of dissidents and religious activists.

His criticism drew a sharp response from China's foreign ministry, which made clear its opposition to external interference in its affairs.

Despite insisting he wanted his visit to Beijing to be about sport and not politics, Mr Bush said: "The US believes the people of China deserve the fundamental liberty that is the natural right of all human beings.

"America stands in firm opposition to China's detention of political dissidents and human rights advocates and religious activists. We press for openness and justice not to impose our beliefs, but to allow the Chinese people to express theirs."

But Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said: "The Chinese government puts people first, and is dedicated to maintaining and promoting its citizens' basic rights and freedom.

"Chinese citizens have freedom of religion. These are indisputable facts. We firmly oppose any words or acts that interfere in other countries' internal affairs, using human rights and religion and other issues."

Mr Bush is walking a diplomatic tightrope in going to Beijing, hoping to avoid embarrassing China, but also facing criticism from human rights groups for not speaking out more forcefully.

"Chinese citizens should have freedom of religion" George W....... George every time I go to a temple here in China there seems to be lots of monks, people praying, people burning money, people burning incense. Or when I was in Xian there seemed to be lots of people praying in the mosques there. Or when I walk passed the local catholic church on a sunday morning there seems to be lots of people attending mass, George was lack of religious freedom are you refering to.

What they want is for people to be able to join anti-chinese politically motivated organisations which masquerade as churches.
Dubya forgets, though, that he needs to face the Chinese people at some stage. It could be interesting.

Bush is a celebrated discredited fool, except to those with the blinkered vision of the American Right(eous). His hypocritical opinions matter not a jot in the general scheme of things.

I'll be back in China very soon. The idiot Thom has done no service there to my native country, Scotland, and should be seen for the self-aggrandizing student politician chump that he is. He is not representative of Scotland.

I have no personal interest in the Olympics anymore, as these games have long been sullied by drugs cheats and chancers who seek to use the event as a political platform.

For my many Chinese friends I hope the Beijing events go well anyway. I know they feel a sense of pride that is far removed from the dirty politics that sadly pollute these threads.

Great stuff.

Just a couple (well, maybe several) of observations:
1) The Olympics is nothing more than a slick way of transferring money from governments into the hands of the slick;
2) George Bush is a moron, who cares what he says;
3) China's record of human rights violations is legion and yet no politician alive has the intestinal fortitude to call a spade a shovel;
4) Who cares what a bunch of spoiled brats do or don't do in Beijing--I resent one penny of my tax money being spent on sponsoring the Canadian contingent--if they want to play their silly games let them pay for the full shot, not rely on a taxpayer subsidy. There are far more important things to support than a bunch of athletes.

I see the usual mouth pieces of the corrupt state are in as isual.
When the games are over and they restrict your internet access again, we will all be spared.
Its sad to see so called Scots who have left to live in another country, just cant hack it there and always have to return to paper sites like this.
YOU have left this country to live else where, please comment in your new country, oops I forgot, you arent allowed to have FREE speach there.
As for the games, people wont need to boycott them if they want, you wont be able to see then becaise of the smog, these games will probably over run with all the cancellations and events getting moved.

Bush is of course just as much of a murderous scumbag as Tony Blair,Gordon Brown and Hu of Red China.
But highlighting this does NOT let the pariah thugs who run Red China off the hook.
At least we can criticise Bush, Hu etc and are free to protest whereas the population of Red China suffers oppression on a massive scale and have no basic human rights.
The Games may bring Red China into third world status in terms of progress but it has a very long way to go.
I hope these games are dogged with people attempting to protest against the murderers and gangsters who run Red China and that the plight of the people of Tibet is brought to world prominence.

Well said, Scots are becoming the gloomiest of people, every comment is a negetive one, why?

Then we have the "I`m not watching the Olympics" brigade. Well who the hell cares!!

The sportsmen of the world who have spent the last four years sweating straining and training their hearts out are not going to miss some sad old Scottish gits, go down the pub and bore the t!ts off any poor schmuck unfortunate enough to be in earshot with your moaning and groaning as usual, not of course before you post here, and show the world what a perochial, tiny minded bitter little peson you are.

Hi Aj,

Last post must have crossed over mate, `Majorky`s`hot again this morning mate, but I`m lucky enough to have a pool so cant complain, and I am on holiday for the whole of August.
I dont care if there is a team GB or not, I cant get too worked up about it, as I have said before, its a bit rich for the Welsh and Scots to throw tantrum`s about a team GB when Wales`s two main teams play in the English league, and Celtic and Rangers have been sounding out the possibility of joining the Premiership for a decade.
If there is a team GB for 2012 I will support it, but would hope the selection is based on merit and not on geographic lines.

33

AJ Fife,

08/08/2008 11:19:31
Peter,

All of August off???? It's a hard life...

Obviously, I'm against it for a number of reasons, but if it did go ahead, the selection would be purely political.

Some bozo like Cameron would get to influence the team. Players from only Tory strongholds would get the nod! So no chance for the Welsh or the Scots! :)

A lot of water will pass under the bridge before 2012 and I can see the whole notion of 'Team GB' being rejected by the public of all four UK nations.

Do you have a heated pool?
34

Peter Baleares,

Palma 08/08/2008 11:46:37
AJ,

I`m in the yacht re-fit industry, and the rich and famous take off in their yachts in July and August to spend their hard earned........which `forces we mere mortals to take a long holiday........and I love it.

Cameron is Pro Union so I think he would select a team on demographic lines rather than on merit, lets hope he never gets a chance.

I saw a proposed team in the Mail a couple of weeks ago, which had todays young players selecter for 2012,and all the countries of the UK were well represented, though I can only remember Wales`s Ramsey and three or four English players that were selected

I think Scotland will have voted for Independence by 2012, but wether the spagetti that joins us can be unscrambled by then will be complete, who can say.

The pool`s not heated, I`ve considered putting in some solar heating, but cant face the upheaval it would cause, besides, its 29c in there this morning and by the time I`ve used it for four months I`ve had enough anyway.

I was at the beach at Es Trenc yesterday the sea was warm, and mate, you should have seen the women, stunners everywhere, , if you ever come here, call me.

#28 Combined football team ?. No problem. Englandshire can field 11 englanders and call it britain if they like, who cares ?. I am quite sure the hockey team and most of the rowing teams will be all englanders
and no one bats an eyelid. Is the boxing team not all englanders ?. I will still be backing them, except of course "Fun time Frankie" our world champion who has failed to make the weight.

What's pathetic is that englandshire does not seem able to get it's head around the fact the rest of the home nations are not interested. Just get on with it and stop moaning. I suggest they field a side made up solely from championship players. Maybe then they will see an Englandshire team that plays with a bit of passion and pride.

Maybe our southern freinds should have thought twice about refusing to take part in the "British Cup", now,
rightly named the Celtic Cup. One day, maybe one day, they will learn to stop acting so arrogantly when dealing with the other home nations.

Until then I think even they have worked out what they can do with their "British " side.

The build up to this Olympics has been more intense than other in living memory. It seems that the world and his wife has something to say on how things are done in China, which the Chinese hosts have so far accepted with good grace and tolerance. The main points of contention is that their central government is run by Civil Servants and that they are not to kind to crims when they are caught. Now I am all for democratic regimes and liberal justice systems, but are we really in any postion to criticise others given what we have in this country?

At least those of us in the USA have given most of you in Europe the opportunity to speak your mind after WWll. Many of us do not fully agree with Bush either, but it is a far cry better than if ALGORE had been in office all this time!
At any rate, the "misty" skies of China are so choked with smog, the athletes will come to their respective homes with lifelong respiratory difficulties afterwards. And all this smog gets sent all over the world with the winds of the earth.
And the religions are persecuted, none are so much as the Christians in China. Christian bashing seems to be the favorite in most of the world now.

`Its,` do you have a first name `Its`

Dont they say that if you`re good enough you`re old enough.

Some people have said the Murray brothers mum has been too pushy, I however, think she is fantastic, kids can be lazy,so much talent is lost because parents cant be bothered, Rafa Nedal is another example, only its his uncle that trains him.

The state churches and foreigners have 'freedom", but people from China have told me that they could (and were) be in a state church for a year and not hear about Jesus. They had to attend the illegal underground churches for that.

Also the underground churchgoers in Beijing and other Olympic venues have been forced from their homes and taken elsewhere fro the duration of the Olympics at the very least, according to a report I heard last night.

So I guess that is freedom in your eyes.
75

MichScot,

I do think the Chinese have done a great job in preparing for the Olympics and I do not think that protests should be a part of the venue. I hope everything goes well and there are no more threats from the Uighers or anyone else.

If I would have to move to either China or the USA, it would certainly be the USA. But I am happy to stay in Scotland. At least here we can have a referendum on independence; can Tibet have a referendum on independence (without all those chinese who have been planted in Tibet having a vote)?

sorry for late reply, but surely it is your ignorance, dont you realise, once they have whatever trade/experience you have, which I am sure they pay you a lot, they will evict you just as Singapore and as any developing country does now
And by the time it does split, I will probably be fertilising the earth
Its called age and experience lol
But if you want to work in a country that oppresses their own people, hey well done.
It will spilt and try to dominate the world due to its expanding population and climate change

At least you have understood the olympic spirit: this is the same as the olympic games in Berlin during Hitler's reign. If that is all the olympics is about, no thank you.

"in the true Olympic tradition all politics and differences should be set aside for the duration of the games!"

Ok, fair enough. But the problem is by being involved in the organising of the games the Chinese regime has made them political. The Beijing government is trying to use the games to help them appear respectable and legitimate on the world stage.

The current Chinese government is not respectable or legitimate. It is a government of unelected, murdering thugs.

The Olympic committee is helping to legitimise the regime in Beijing by holding the event there.

These Olympics ARE political. If you want to make a political statement in support of the Chinese government, watch the Olympics.

If you want to support the PEOPLE of China and Tibet in their long struggle for democracy and human rights, boycott the Olympics.

If you don't have an opinion either way and you want to stay out of politics, then the only way you can stay neutral is by boycotting the Olympics anyway. As soon as you watch those games, you will be siding with the Chinese regime, whether you choose to believe it or not.

China has been the resolute ally of the Zimbabwean and North Korean regimes. Just a short while ago it was trying to ship arms to Mugabe.
Just a couple of months ago China imprisoned a Bhuddist monk for his opposition to a one party state.
Worst of all, it has murdered over 140 Tibetan freedom fighters so far this year, and has prevented free press coverage of events in Tibet.
All athletes, politicians, and spectators at the Beijing Olympics are repulsively immoral wretches. I damn the whole bloody lot of them.
90

Caora Dubh,

Croit sheasgair 08/08/2008 22:10:22
The Beijing Olympics are a moral nadir for humanity - a descent into the cesspit.
The International Olympic Committee should take full responsibility for the deaths and injuries of all the protesters that they must surely have known would occur, and they should resign. Bloody cretins.

if any of you have read my posts were on many occasions I have been critical of the Chinese government and their policies, poster 89 my criticism of Mugabe is well documented on these boards.

Poster 88 Angus in the ancient times of the Olympics wars were stopped all differences put aside for the games were all men could come together and partake only in the "Honour of the games"

if politic`s should now be the issue then why was the games given to China in the first place?

the time for taking on China is over Tibet was in 1959 the world did nothing!

if freedom for the Chinese people was the issue then all the countries with Olympic committees should have opposed china been giving the games... none did!
it is now to late in the day to make an issue
the only thing left is to enjoy the games, in a few weeks it will all be over and everyone can get back the previous position and criticize China`s policies.

Beijing Olympic 2008 opening ceremony giant firework footprints 'faked'
Parts of the spectacular Beijing Olympics opening ceremony on Friday were faked because of fears over live filming, it has emerged
As the ceremony got under way with a dramatic, drummed countdown, viewers watching at home and on giant screens inside the Bird's Nest National Stadium watched as a series of giant footprints outlined in fireworks processed gloriously above the city from Tiananmen Square.

What they did not realise was that what they were watching was in fact computer graphics, meticulously created over a period of months and inserted into the coverage electronically at exactly the right moment.

The fireworks were there for real, outside the stadium. But those responsible for filming the extravaganza decided in advance it would be impossible to capture all 29 footprints from the air.

From the BBC:

"CHINA OLYMPIC CEREMONY STAR MIMED"
A pretty girl who won national fame after singing at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games was only miming.
Wearing a red dress and pigtails, Lin Miaoke charmed a worldwide audience with a rendition of “Ode to the Motherland”.
But the singer was Yang Peiyi, who was not allowed to appear because she is not as "flawless" as nine-year-old Lin.
The show's musical director said Lin was used because it was in the best interests of the country.
The revelation follows news that a fireworks display used during the opening ceremony was apparently faked.
'Smiling angel'
Speaking on Beijing Radio station, musical director Chen Qigang said the organisers needed a girl with both a good image and a good voice.
Yang Peiyi had the perfect voice but apparently not the perfect face"
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7556058.stm

The ugly duckling with the better voice dips out "in the interests of the country". Whatever.....
