IT ALL started with Rolf Harris heading a 3,500-strong parade along Princes Street.
The success of the pipes and drums extravaganza in 1995 led to the event being replicated and expanded several times in Edinburgh and on to various locations around the world.

Now the organisers behind the "Pipefest" events have unveiled plans for their most ambitious project to date – a 24-hour global piping celebration.

Concerts and parades will be held at 20-minute intervals in at least 70 towns and cities around the world on 31 July, 2010.

It is hoped at least 12,000 pipers and drummers will be in place for the event, which will start and finish in Edinburgh.

A worldwide TV audience of more than 100 million is targeted, equivalent to the annual TV audience for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

The event is planned to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for cancer charities around the world, while raising global awareness of Scottish traditional music.

The 2010 Pipefest, dubbed "Around the World in 24 Hours", is expected to get under way in Edinburgh at 2pm.

Among the places pencilled in to take part are Inverness, Belfast, Dublin, Reykjavic, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dunedin, Perth, Osaka, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Islamabad and Cape Town.

Epic Concepts director Magnus Orr said: "Our big aim is to have more than 10,000 pipers and drummers taking part, which we've not been able to manage in previous events. We're actually hoping to get 12,000 from all over the world involved.

"We had players from 27 countries in the last Pipefest in Holyrood Park and we want to build on this success.

"We want to unite pipers from all over the world with a 24-hour programme, with each segment starting 20 minutes after the last one, so that piping will eventually circumnavigate the world."

Mr Orr said the contacts built up by the company over the last 13 years would be the foundations for organising the 2010 event. Epic Concepts has a database of more than 1,800 pipe bands.

It is hoped special concerts and parades will be staged at "iconic locations" in participating cities.

Mr Orr added: "We think it'll bring an enormous amount of publicity and goodwill to Scotland.

"However, the principal objective is to help raise money for cancer care charities and to unite countries around the world whose cultural identity is enriched by the pipes and drums."

A spokeswoman for the national tourism agency, VisitScotland, said: "Pipefest 2010 will be a great opportunity to enhance the stay of many visitors to Edinburgh in 2010 and to attract more potential international visitors as the groups go piping all over the world.

"Edinburgh already boasts a year-round programme of world-class events and festivals but additional, quality events on this scale help to showcase Scotland as a must visit, must return destination."

Simon Thoumire, organiser of the annual Scots Trad Music Awards, said: "This sounds like an absolutely fantastic event, which should do a huge amount to promote playing of the instrument.

"Not everyone knows bagpipes are played all around the world, not just in Scotland, and this event will help raise awareness of that, as well as create an amazing event on the day."

MARCH OF THE PIPERS

THE organisers of Pipefest 2010 have staged three massive piping parades in Edinburgh city centre over the last 15 years, as well as major events in Paris, New York, Rome, Shanghai, Indianapolis and Barcelona.

Rolf Harris famously agreed to learn to play the pipes for the first event in 1995, which set a world record after 3,500 musicians took part. However its success was dwarfed by the 2000 event, fronted by Scots rugby legend Gavin Hastings. Ewan McGregor had been lined up for the honour, but had to record a special contribution on the drums because of commitments on Star Wars.

The last big event put together by Epic Concepts, the events firm behind the spectaculars, saw more than 8,000 pipers and drummers converge on Edinburgh's Holyrood Park three years ago for a massive parade around the beauty spot.

More than £500,000 has been raised for cancer charities since the initial event. However, it is hoped the 2010 Pipefest will see fundraising top £1 million.

All who may be travelling in South East Asia in late May and are fans of the Pipes should know that the 31st Jakarta Highland Gathering will be taking place in Jakarta Indonesia on May 25th 2008.

Hope to see you there.

I see that there is absolutely nothing happening within Europe....Germany, France, Italy, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Austria to name but a few where there are plenty of Scots and Scotland lovers...

What happened to to the East coast of Australia? Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne could field a large contingent. I hope the organisers look here as well.

I shall go and hide myself, with a good pair of earplugs so as to miss this event entirely. Bagpipes are instruments of torture, not music, and surely should be covered by the European Court of Human Rights.
7

Truely English,

Why is it that those who wish to split up the Union never praise Scotland or its culture. All they seem to be interested in is money and bashing the English.

Does this not seem a bit strange to anyone interested in Scotland?

Political Exile,

Gaillan en Medoc 02/04/2008 08:41:41
Kate (post 5) is spot on. Visit Scotland has a great tourism product to sell in Europe but this extravaganza is limited to 'existing' clients in mainly Commonwealth countries. Paris has the Montmartre Pipe Band, there is a Scottish Dancing Group in Bordeaux and I am sure that all over Europe similar groups exist. Lateral thinking is called for here!

As usual, out from the darker recesses of the woodwork creep the cynics, the sarcastic, the negative. The whole point of this is to raise money for charity so crawl back into your recesses and spare us your feeble wit. Or maybe you could all try doing something for someone else and support those willing to put in honest, honourable effort for charity?

Great idea but again we need some new blood to organise as the old fuddy duddies that have run these events forget its the 21st century and need to get with it. Look at our own Pipeband championship season here...the speakers still don't work for all to hear the results and this is just one example.
Why isn't there more European countries involved! and Perth Australia! I know better and far more stronger pipe bands in Melbourne to Brisbane that would no doubt be happy to join in as well as the Kiwi's. More thought required I think to make this a outstanding event.

Number 6,

Germany 02/04/2008 09:38:54
The final list has not been announced. Considering how many Pipe bands are in Germany, I would be astonished if nothing was happening here. A quick e-mail to Epic
Concepts should dispell any fears.

#8 What the hell are you on about ? Where is the English bashing here ?. Is the fact that England is a cultural desert that is getting up your nose. You could always organise a world-wide Morris dancing day
in retaliation mate.

I am new to the piping scene, only two years into it. Our band has traveled twice to this event. I am sure we will have a showing somewhere in the world to support it. Every year we play for the Relay for Life a 24 hour event to raise money for cancer. This year will be my second year, and I will be playing in two events, a week a part. What ever we can do to raise money for this event, will help.

#16 I hope Salmond does get involved, once again representing Scotland. You can bet your bottom dollar none of the Labour shower, especially Alexander or Brown , will want anything to do with it.

In fact they will be raging that Scotland, as a country is in the world Spotlight.

Bloody Pipes. I have to listen to them all day long blasting from the 'Taki' shops on the Royal Mile. It's a nightmare. I've gone from loving bagpipe music to absolutely hating it.

Yep, nice one. Hope it succeeds.

There is an occupied land mass in all 24 time zones so it would be matter of getting a pipe band in every zone. Might require flying one into a couple of them though.

What a bloody good idea! As the inventor of the modern world it will be great to see Scotland at the centre of the universe again.

Have played the Lone Pipers cd for some motivation and annoy my pommie neighbour. Got the chanter out and all is well. Come the big day Australia won't let you blokes down. Flower of Scotland, Highland Cathedral, Hector .... bring it on!

Good luck to all participants!

Yep a great idea .. a piper led world revival!

Well said Truely English No8. These people are so bigoted they feel they must put Scotland down at every opportunity in order to save the Union.

Personally I can't wait for this worldwide Pipefest. There is nothing more stirring than a Pipe Band. The idea of thousands of pipers marching worldwide is awesome.

We are not marching with guns, tanks, rockets and other weapons of death bringing fear to enhance our powerful image in the world we are marching with music to bring joy and excitement throughout the world.

Which do the Unionist trolls think would be better received by the people of the world, the guns or our music?

BTW looks like August 1st would be an excellent date for the Referendum. lol

Great to see this... but did the organisers no give any consideration to what day to the week they are holding this event? Most pipers have full time jobs and many of them will be working at 2pm on a Thursday afternoon! They would be able to achieve their target of 12,000 pipers much better if they'd held it on a weekend afternoon.
29

McX,

Sounds great!

For all you who are moaning about the list of cities taking part and the fact that you think places are missing, the important part of that section of the article is "Among the places pencilled in to take part are". This is just a preliminary plan - no one's leaving you out. And if you're worried they will - start a petition!!

Personally I hope there's something in London but I won't hold my breath...

Ahhh - you've gotta love the bagpipes!! I sometimes try to blow on a set I got from my trip to Edinborough, they are real difficult to play though. The proper ones too - made in Pakistan and travelled all the way to Scotland. My neighbour doesn't like them much but I sure love blowing away in the backyard trying to get a tune out of them.

If England is a cultural desert why are the people of Scotland, Wales and Ireland always apeing what happens in England.
It seems that Scotland has very little in the form of culture that is not English culture; call it Britih or otherwise.
Man cannot live by Bread alone and Scottish people especially on this newspaper site seem to do little more than belittle English/British people and minorities in Scotland. What kind of country would it be if it ever gained more power or split away from England.

Dude
U must remember that, when U enter into this link, and the posters who frequent it.
Logic takes a back seat to nationalism, and micro-minded thinkers . The SNP dudes I am referring to.

They SQUAWK SQUAWK SQUAWK and more recently Beg, Beg Beg .

And where do they go with their begging bowl, to England of course. Because that's where the jing is .

And who do they lambaste all the while , England of course .

If Alex Salmond had the power and money of our evil Pres Bush , Salmond would act just like Bush.

But I will credit Salmond with a modecum of intelligence , sorely lacking in Bush.

Hey U SNP fanatics, Its Cherokee Day, so go ride a pie-balled pony Dudes.

With the wind blowing Ur black hair, as U gallop through the Bad Lands of Dakota.

Hey #35 . BE NICE don't be nasty.
Swallow a chill pill and relax.

The thing about the 24 time zones in my earlier post at 23 is that it would be possible for all the bands to play at the same time. Therefore you could have 24 hours of bagpipe music in the space of one March, Strathspey and Reel.

Now that would be something.
35

Jock Tamson,

Scotland, Caledonia, Alba 02/04/2008 17:52:20
Re 37, all you would need is a set playlist and 24 TV cameras. At 1400, Edinburgh time everyone begins playing the same tunes.

Then the studio people edit the whole thing into a DVD as a compilation of all bands playing one musical track. The DVD is sold for charity as well.

Bingho.

If this could be set up for viewing on Public T.V it would be a great and perhaps all contributions could be split down the middle 50% to Public T.V and the other 50% of the contributions could be directed to the Cancer Fund. Plus it would give everyone a chance to view this wonderful event

While I detest the bagpipes (and wonder about bagpipe enthusiasts), I have nothing but praise for this effort. Sure, lots of good suggestions for improving it but you can be sure the Silver Thistle Pipes & Drums in Austin, TX will be getting a copy of this article and all the related links.

Scottish culture is distinct from English culture thanks largely to the ancient Romans. They removed any Celtic influence in England during their years there. They had much less of a presence in Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, and it's from those countries that the Celtic traditions survive.

If interested, "Through the Eyes of a Raptor" is a fantasy that draws heavily upon Celtic myth and Scottish culture, and is available on Amazon (both US and UK).

The pipes aren't for everyone - it's all a matter of personal taste. But piping for charitable causes is a worthy effort and while I won't be part of the organized Pipefest, I'll certainly go down to the park and pipe on the designated day in solidarity of a good cause!

Where did you get your definitive list of countries with pipe bands Magnus?

Are you sayng there are no pipe bands in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan or Russia? If so, you're talking rubbish.

And only 8 pipe bands in Hongkong? Again, rubbish, there are considerably more. There's even a pipeband in the main part of China now.

It really is beyond me, how the eastern seaboard of Australia doesn't get a mention for your pipefest let alone New Zealand.

Think you need to go back to the drawing board.

We welcome the opportuntiy to add more pipe bands and venues to our list.

Our aim is to invite every pipe band and to make it easy for them to take part by helping organise events that are close by. This way we hope to encourage a much greater number of people to take part. In some countries there may be more than one event.

We welcome suggestions for suitable venues. It would be good if "Pipefest - Around the World" can help support existing events such as Highland games, music festivals or Sports events.

Thank you for all your comments.

Magnus;
Don't let the bullies get the best of you.
My guess the numbers you are coming up with are bands that are in pipe band associations around the world. We all know there are many more than that. Everyone one will be welcome no doubt. Spread the word if someone is "missing" off the list. Magnus works very hard at this, and keep in mind it's a few years away! The events are always spectacular and more importantly, for a great cause. I was so proud to be a part in 2005, and last year in Nova Scotia. Sign me up for 2010! Tell me where I need to be and I'll make sure I'm there with my band!
