ICONIC photographs spanning 95 years and featuring the likes of Madonna, Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein are to go on show in the Capital.
The exhibition of images from Vanity Fair magazine from 1913 onwards will run for four months at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery on Queen Street from June.

The exhibition has attracted the largest sponsorship yet at the gallery, with a six-figure sum being paid by Lloyds TSB.

Chief curator and deputy director, Nicola Kalinsky, said: "There is tremendous excitement about this already and I think many people will be looking for an excuse to come and see this."

The magazine has provided 150 photographs to go on show at Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008.

Ms Kalinsky said: "From the start, Vanity Fair always commissioned some of the world's most important photographers, and still do in fact, so there will be a lot of striking images and a lot of glamour.

"There are some very starry people involved, such as Carry Grant, and it goes right up to the present day. All this will be represented in the exhibition."

It is the first time Vanity Fair has released photographs for an exhibition, and the pictures will go on display in London before coming to Edinburgh, and then go on to Los Angeles and Australia.

A spokesman for the exhibition said: "Vanity Fair's iconic photographs continue to make news.

"Since the magazine's re-launch in 1983, cover images including the Reagans dancing (1985) and a very pregnant Demi Moore (1991) have been embedded in the collective cultural consciousness."

Lloyds TSB said it was keen to be part of what is one of the highest profile portrait events to come to Edinburgh.

Chief executive Susan Rice said: "We are tremendously pleased to play our part in bringing such an iconic exhibition to Scotland.

"This prestigious collection will undoubtedly be a hugely popular attraction, and we will work together with our long-term partners at the National Galleries of Scotland to ensure we attract new visitors to the National Portrait Gallery as well as regulars."

The gallery's director general, John Leighton, said: "This is the largest ever sponsorship of an exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and we are delighted to be renewing our long-standing relationship with Lloyds TSB Scotland, who have generously supported a series of major exhibitions at the National Galleries.

"This is an exhibition that will appeal to everyone, and we hope it will encourage a great many new visitors to visit the gallery."
