A TREE-TOP adventure park in Perthshire has been vandalised in an attack being linked to protests targeted at a similar centre proposed for Glasgow's Pollok Park.
Vandals calling themselves Fight for Pollok Park cut three tree-top zip wires and daubed graffiti on trees at the Go Ape park in Aberfoyle last Friday.

The attack happened two days after the Scottish Government refused to step in to halt the same
company building a controversial Go Ape adventure course in Glasgow.

Staff at the Aberfoyle adventure centre found the vandalism on Saturday morning while carrying out routine safety checks before the playground opened.

They discovered the zip wires had been cut half way down.

Graffiti saying "Go Away Ape" and signed FFPP had been daubed on trees.

According to staff, similar graffiti had been written at Pollok Park several months ago.

It is believed the graffiti and initials FFPP, which stand for Fight for Pollok Park, were written by a splinter campaign group at Pollok Park at the start of the summer and that the attacks are linked.

Last night, Bill Fraser, spokesman for Save Pollok Park, distanced himself from the vandals.

He said: "We absolutely condemn vandalism of any sort, particularly if it could put lives at risk. We have never campaigned against Go Ape as an activity, just its location in Pollok Park which we think is unsuitable. Anyone carrying out such acts of vandalism has no place in our campaign."

The Glasgow Go Ape development, which would be the latest in a chain of 17 adventure playgrounds featuring slides and high rope walkways, has attracted fierce opposition.

The Save Pollok Park campaign attracted 900 written objections, and 4,000-signatures on a petition when the planning application was submitted.

The scheme, passed by the city's planning department in March, was referred to Holyrood as Glasgow City Council, which would be paid for leasing the land, had a financial interest in the venture.

Objectors, backed by Nicola Sturgeon, the deputy First Minister, had hoped the decision would be called in.

However, last Wednesday ministers said they would not do so and the council, will have the final say.

Tristram Mayhew, chief executive of Go Ape said:

"As a matter of routine, all Go Ape courses are checked thoroughly by staff each day before they can be used by any member of the public.

"It was during these checks that the issues at Aberfoyle came to light.

"However I am pleased to say that repairs are under way and the course should be back to normal by the early part of this week."

Patrick Harvie, Green MSP for Glasgow, who opposed the plan, said: "There is no excuse for any vandalism especially in anything that puts visitors at risk.

"Greens remain opposed to the Pollok Park scheme because of its location but in the right place Go Ape is an excellent way of getting kids out into Scotland's countryside."

A spokesman for Central Scotland Police said "We are currently investigating a report of vandalism at these premises."

That is just pathetic, and shows that the people behind the campaign to keep this company out of Pollok Park in Glasgow are nothing more than an unrepresentative bunch of Green ecology type extremists. Now that the Scottish Ministers have given the venture the thumbs up, the Glasgow City Council should stick two fingers up to the killjoys and extremists and approve the Go Ape project at Pollok Park.

!Ya basta!,

Can we know a bit more about why this group is protesting against such a facility in Pollock Park? 900 written objections and 4,000 on a petition is pretty impressive. What exactly is the issue? Very shoddy journalism again, editing too.

It is interesting that SPP are distancing themselves from this hiddeous and mindless act - but they should accountable in part at least, afterall they were the ones who whipped up a storm of incorrect information and rediculously emotive language and images throughout the campaign.

They are clearly unable to control the nemesis that they have unleashed!

#2 I was wondering the same thing.

Maybe the group are protecting the woods for vandalism!

The vandalism at Aberfeldy is an unwelcome provision of fodder for those who wish to discredit Save Pollok Park's principled stand against the encroachment of private enterprise in a public park gifted for the free use of all. Too many people have seen fit to level criticism at this campaign without knowledge of the whole story. For an overview, see my short film on the SPP website, or go direct to www.vimeo.com/123652

Anyone who condones this type of behaviour are sick individuals - as much as those who actually carry out the acts of damage to equipment.

How can you justify putting the lives of people in danger? ...because this is what you are doing by trying to justify your 'cause'.

SPP have whipped up this scaremongering campaign based alot of the time on lies - they should hold themselves partially responsible at least for what has happened....

The fact that #5 cannot even get the name of the site at Aberfoyle correct says alot about how the SPPs whole campaign has been totally based on gossip and incorrect information.....

You don't even live in Glasgow so what is your local interest in Pollok Park? Perhaps you are just one of those individuals who seeks out a cause and enjoys whipping up a frenzy then sitting back and enjoying the fall-out!

Thankyou for pointing out my careless, early morning typo no 6. My interest in Pollok Park, besides having many Glaswegian friends, and a considerable familiarity with the place, is the principle of common good land being rented out to private enterprise for the benefit of a few. Of course i am not impressed with any militant action which endangers public safety, but the campaign issue is a serious one and I see no merit in discussing it with people who have not familiarised themselves fully with the background.

The North Wood at Pollok park is a rare area of natural woodland and was understood as such by the historic owners when they gifted it to the city, under the care and keeping of the National Trust for Scotland.

I have nothing against Go Ape. Indeed I have been to, and thoroughly enjoyed their facility at Aberfoyle. But their business product is aimed at the special occasion and corporate team-building market, with a price structure which reflects this, and as such runs completely counter to the spirit in which Pollok Park was handed over to the people.

Undrerstanding this, and then trying to do something about it is hardly scaremongering or gratuitous rabble-rousing.

Basically a beautiful park is going to be scarred by putting a tree-top slide system into a wooded area. The park was gifted to the people of Glasgow for peaceful recreation purposes. Here's the relevant web-site:

Bemused and above it all,

Given this decision is in breach of the Maxwell's wishes, for a second time, the first being the M77 extension, then surely there is a case for the land to revert to control of the Maxwell family estate?
With the Burrell estate regaining control of the collection which GCC gladly whoores out in the new guise of Culture & Sport?
Thats right ALL CULTURAL & SPORTING FACILITIES IN GLASGOW are OWNED by a 'charity' which runs at a profit to 'fund the commonwealth games', no chance any of the cash will end up in the accounts of the 'directors' otherwise known as GCC Councillors?

The Go Ape facility in Aberfoyle does not stop people from using the park facilities. In fact it really impressed me how well hidden it was - it definitely did not spoil access or enjoyment of the peaceful location at all. I'm usually all in favour of keeping nature natural (hence my screen name) but am struggling to see the problem with this. People can still use the park and the council earns some much needed money which will benefit Glaswegians. What am I missing?

A classic case of the haves wanting to deprive the have nots. NOT in my backyard. Many so called greenies world wide are the jerks driving the rustiest, clapped out smokie vehicles on the road. They complain about the planet at the same time. No vandalism of one play park is justified. It doesn't happen here, folk respect one another and themselves. Besides jail and rehabilitation through labour awaits anyone wishing to make their statement by breaking the law.Don't seem to know that in Scotland vandalism is breaking the law.Never mind the jails are full and they will get a wet bus ticket wrist slap if caught. You deserve them.
