Published Date: 03 April 2008
TWO drunken friends attacked a man after a night out because he looked like pop singer Daniel Bedingfield. Jamie Duffy and Byron McCrindle, both 24, were walking home after a night out in Edinburgh when they started taunting Greig Saunders, a court heard yesterday.
Duffy laughed as he shouted: "You look like Daniel Bedingfield." Mr Saunders, 28, was angered by the comparison to the New Zealand-born singer.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard he hurled insults back at the pair before throwing his jacket to the gr
ound and challenged them to a fight. McCrindle caught him off guard by hitting him in the face.

Meanwhile, Duffy picked up the victim's jacket and swung it around his head, while continuing to throw insults at him, the court was told.

Duffy, a joiner, then joined in by punching Mr Saunders in the head. Both attackers then fled, running off down the street. They were later picked up after being pointed out to police officers.

Yesterday both men pleaded guilty to assault. Angus McLennan, acting for Duffy, told the court that neither of the accused had intended any harm by comparing Mr Saunders to Bedingfield.

He said: "This was a stupid and unnecessary confrontation resulting from a throwaway remark meant in a humorous way. My client very much regrets being drawn into this."

Acting for McCrindle, Iain Tweedie added: "My client realises he is now too old to be getting involved in this kind of thing."

Sheriff Fiona Reith called for background reports regarding McCrindle and sentence was deferred on both men.

Bedingfield shot to fame with the No1 hit single I Gotta Get Thru This in 2001, which was written in his bedroom with only one computer and a microphone plugged into it, before releasing a string of love ballads, including If You're Not the One.

In 2004 he nearly died after crashing his 4x4 as he holidayed in New Zealand. He broke his neck, had to have a metal frame bolted to his skull, and, as a result, had to spend four months in hospital.

Clearly Saunders has no sense of humour. He should be done as well because this "attack" was clearly the result of his provocation.

I agree with No.1 - Why are these two guys the only ones that have been charged and appearing in court?
The justice system stinks

To be honest, this story brightened up my day. If the journalism wasn't inept enough, the writer decides to insert a little post-script-paragraph on Mr Bedingfield himself, his record release to date and a little medical history just for good measure - helpful to the ignorant maybe - but doubling the comical value in the process. WELL DONE YOU! ;-)

No idea who this guy is and none the wiser really.

"He wrote a tune on only ONE computer".

Hmm, being a bit handy round the DAWs myself this is normally adequate, unless you are using Rewire and a host of plugins.

I guess its a 00's version of - you look like Phil Collins/ a pile of dog muck /backperm.

Amazing how a few pints generally seems to be the root cause of such incidents.

Sister H,

The attackers should be locked up if only for knowing what 'Bedders' looks like in the first place!

"McCrindle caught him off guard by hitting him in the face."

He didn't see it coming then?

'You've gotta get through this'

Why is it that Duffy & McCrindle are up on charges and not the other guy! He was the one who asked for the square go??
Clearly the guy though he could take them, but couldnt.

Tough luck, eh.

No. Stupidity and being totally brain dead generally seems to be the root cause of such incidents.

15 Stupidity , Brain Dead , and mixed up with a good few pints.

This wouldnt have happened in St James Centre during a stone cold sober lunchtime !

Yeah, but remove the "stupid" and "brain-dead" elements and this would not have happened---which is why I say that it is not down to drink.

Drugs make people do funny things. They affect your brain. We've discussed this before.

Challenge someone to a fight lose and get them done for assault Hardly fair
His client was caught off guard what was he doing waiting for the bell ?

In this case it's better to be safe than sorry. If you suspect someone of being an awful pop singer hit them first and ask questions later.

22. No. But you would be done for indecent exposure if you blew the candle out with your wind.

I reckon Mr Saunders will be cringing right now.

Not only does he look like Daniel Bedingfield, but now the EN readership knows that he can't take a joke, he likes to challenge folk to a fight and then he reports them to the police when he gets a well-deserved hiding!

Embarrassing or what?
27

is it me?,

I was once chased by a couple of brutes who thought I was Dolly Parton.

Luckily my wig fell off and tripped them up.

#19 Mario,

I agree. There's a lot of people out there who do stupid things while drunk but aren't necessarily fundamentally stupid. In fact, those that eventually voluntarily stop the drinking are actually quite intelligent.
