CHERIE Blair has accused Gordon Brown of "rattling the keys" of Downing Street over Tony Blair's head in an attempt to force him out of office.
In the first extract from her autobiography, Blair disclosed that her husband would have stood down as prime minister before the 2005 general election if Brown had been prepared to back his public service reforms.

Blair said her husband had suffer
ed a "crisis of confidence" over the Iraq war, fearing that he had become an electoral liability.

But she said he decided that he had to stay on to entrench his plans for city academies, foundation hospitals and pension reform.

She said Brown was "rattling the keys above his head" and failed to understand that Blair would have quit if he had supported his reforms.

"Tony would have stood down, there is no question," she said. "Instead of which, Tony felt he had no option but to stay on and fight for the things he believed in.

"I was convinced that if Tony failed to stand for a third term, it would be seen as a response to the negative criticism of the war. It would be read by history as a tacit admission of failure."

She said Blair was now advising Brown through the current political turmoil and counselling him on how he could win the next general election.

"I know that Tony thinks Gordon could win the election and I know that he has spoken to Gordon about how he could do that.

"Tony has given Gordon advice. He and Gordon talk to each other even now."

Blair said she took no pleasure in Brown's current troubles and would "be delighted" to campaign for the Labour Party in future.

In an interview yesterday, she played down the animosity between her and Brown, saying: "If I've had any problems with Gordon, it was only because I thought he was putting too much pressure on Tony to leave when Tony wasn't ready."

She writes in her book that the effect the "constant attrition" had on her husband coloured her feelings.

"Gordon and I have had our ups and downs. And when it came down to it, I think Gordon would be astonished if I wasn't my husband's biggest supporter. I'm sure Gordon's wife Sarah is his," she said.

Blair admits in her autobiography that she was furious when Brown pressurised Labour MPs to turn down a planned 26% pay rise in 1997.

She says she was worried about the family's financial commitments and writes: "I wouldn't be calmed down. How dare Gordon do that?

"What did he know about financial commitments? He was a bachelor living on his own in a flat with a small mortgage."

She said they had "a mortgage the size of Mount Snowdon" on their £3.6m house in central London's exclusive Connaught Square.

"That was very scary. Whatever happened, we had to meet the monthly payment and it was down to me. Because no-one else was going to meet it, were they?"

Blair also reveals that the so-called Granita pact between her husband and Brown was not agreed in the Granita restaurant in Islington, north London, at all.

Instead, she says the deal that saw Brown step aside in the Labour leadership battle was agreed at her sister Lyndsey's house in Richmond Avenue.

She said they did meet at Granita a day or two later, "but by then it was all done and dusted" that Blair would become party leader and Brown would take over at a later date. The timing of the publication of Blair's autobiography came as a surprise, having originally been scheduled for the autumn. It is now due out on Thursday.

Blair said that some of the proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Care charity. Her aunt died from breast cancer and Blair's literary agent, Kate Jones – who negotiated the book deal with publisher Little, Brown – had been treated for breast cancer prior to her death in February from liver cancer.

The arrogance of this woman is outstanding, "How dare Gordon" stop the pay rise, family worried about financial concerns, this the BLAIR FAMILY, unbelievable.

An unelected vicious witch with a hidden agenda from day one!

Hey Cherie,

If you have a notion to 'MOUTH OFF',

F*ck off an get yourself elected,

however, just like Hillary, you have no chance.

My comment is in no way a point against women, we all correctly live in an equal world. I also have no liking or sympathy for Brown.
A very good example of a spouse opening their mouth when not required, is that old Greek at the rear of Her Majesty.

What a shame, worried about her mortgage. Presumably she's still worried about her mortgages on all six of the multi-million pound houses they now have.

She should be more worried about the fact that Bliar is a war criminal and will, with a bit of luck, end up being tried for his war crimes.

I wasnt fond of Blair, Im even less so of G. Brown, and I can not stand Cherie, but I do believe what she says about G Brown.
IT was obvious that he was trying to push Blair out of office, now he is where he always wanted to be, and it seems he has exceeded his capabilities, Be careful what you wish for, I think this applies here, he should do the decent thing, lets have an election.

Not a fan then Joe? :o)

Congratulations to the power behind the throne. If these extracts are anything to go by, this book will go into history as essential reading for any would-be politician.

Any would-be politician who wants to be seen as a doormat and has a grasping social climber for a wife that is. She certainly has inherited her father's charm.

they must be the two worst prime ministers in the political history of this once great country.
the damage done by them is beyond repair, if people had only realised that they were voting for there own
destruction.
what a tragic mess it has now become

And all the time we thought the party was united!

Just shows you, "stuff the people and let's get on with the business of looking after ourselves". Brown, in particular, has no interest in the country -- it's just about Gordon.

Let's tell him what we think when he next faces the test.

That Blair woman, for all her supposed intelligence, is showing herself to be a proper dunce in her biography/memoir/gossip column.

Get thee back into the kitchen where you belong, Cherie dear. You are now superfluous to everything in the UK.

Better still, get thee to a nunnery and reflect on your sins of dissimulation, fudging of the facts, and outright LIES!

Why are you ALWAYS dragging in stupid irrelevancies?

That event in Canada was on another thread and has no place in this thread.

Got it, you simpleton?

Apparently, it is a skill you have yet to acquire.

#19 Gtj - Was that last week's u-turn on the week before's u-turn or has there been a brand new u-turn on the double back somersault with flic-flac she made last week on the previous triple axel with side-spin? Lots of acrobats preparing for the Olympics in Beijing will feel very put out that bendy uuuuuuendy makes so many fancy manouevres and all the while she continues to spin in a way that any Dervish would be proud of.
