TWO adverts, for Jaffa Cakes and Maltesers, were banned yesterday for suggesting the products were low-fat or low-calorie.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that an advert featuring the statement that a Malteser contains "less than 11 calories" gave the "misleading impression" that the sweet was low in energy.

The watchdog also criticised a Jaffa Cakes a
dvert that said each cake had "only one gram of fat". Again, it said this suggested the product was low in fat.

Both can no longer in shown on TV in their current form.

The Jaffa Cake commercial showed two women chatting about a friend, Michelle, who had called claiming she was stuck down a well. One says to the other: "Don't worry, she's always lying. Last week, she said there was only one gram of fat in a McVitie's Jaffa Cake."

Both women start to laugh and a voiceover states: "Michelle isn't lying. Each delicious McVitie's Jaffa Cake really does have only one gram of fat."

Two viewers complained the advert was misleading because it implied the cakes were a healthy snack by focusing on the amount of fat in one cake while ignoring the percentage fat content.

The ASA decided it did not give the impression that Jaffa Cakes were a healthy snack, as the viewers had complained, but it did rule that the "one gram of fat" claim did make it appear that the product was low in fat.

Regulations state that low-fat claims cannot be made for products with more than 3g of fat per 100g for solids – Jaffa Cakes have 8g per 100g.

The ASA said: "We concluded that the claim 'only one gram of fat' misleadingly suggested that Jaffa Cakes were low in fat."

A spokeswoman for United Biscuits, which makes Jaffa Cakes, said it had received no complaints about the advert.

Jaffa Cakes don't meet the criterion to be described as low-fat
Jaffa Cakes don't meet the criterion to be described as low-fat
He went on: "We believe the 'only one gram of fat' message, which is an accurate statement of truth, is helpful to consumers and was not intended to be a low fat claim."

The watchdog also criticised an advert in which a woman offers her friend a Malteser, telling her: "Less than 11 calories each."

The other woman disappointedly replies: "Yeah? That's not very naughty."

Mars, the maker of Maltesers, said the calorie comment was supposed to be a factual statement about the number of calories per sweet and not a suggestion they were low in energy.

But the ASA decided the "less than 11 calories each" comment did suggest they were low in calories, especially in a commercial that emphasised Maltesers not being so "naughty".

A Mars spokesman said: "It is true that Maltesers contain less than 11 calories per 2.1 gram sweet. This phrase was intended as a statement of fact on the number of calories in each Malteser rather than to suggest that the product is 'low energy'."

Jeanette Nugent, a spokeswoman for the Chocolate Society, set up to represent chocolate connoisseurs, said:

"People should try to develop a taste for dark chocolate because its higher cocoa content means it contains far less sugar than the average chocolate bar."

I suppose those quango parasites have to at least give an impression that they're earning their cash.
Even if they're just spouting a lot of patronising tosh.

doublescotch ~2,

Sorry I never saw you there!, subject matter, made me Goooooo,..'Ape'! :)

Things at this end are 'Holding' after one distressing night two weeks ago, when beloved decided, no point the fight no more, after the despicable event that took place, which I think you know about, in the latter, and not the night I speak of.

You know something?

This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to deal with, It is not something that you expect to take place, moreso, on someone who was trusted, to an extent.

I am doing all I can, with,..'Loving-Awareness', I hope this Love will conquer all, it puts me in a Lonely Position, as I must step-back and let time try to heal, at the same time, be strong for DYW.

She still cant come to terms, and tell me much, but she is seeing others, that counsel in the matter.

I am no expert in this subject, and it does come as a shock, but I am here for DYW 24/7 if she needs me, albeit at times, a phone call or text away, when I go out, as one must to survive, as in making a living.

Catch-up Soon,

Lve C x.

#5 Hello Charles. I do know what a Woman's worse Nightmare is. I was horrified but knew you would be the shoulder she would lean on and Charles it is good to let others counsel in this matter. There will be alot of diferent emotions going through Suzanne's mind.
The sad night you speak of when we have all being praying for the babies is heart-breaking but please tell Suzanne not to give up. I keep you both in my prayers.

#5 Charles. When sad things in our lives when we were children. Our father always took us out for the day to The Holy Isle and Bamberg (sp.) Castle. He told us all about Grace Darling and how she saved people that were shattered by the storms she was a very brave young woman as is Suzanne. It is a most beautiful place. At this moment Suzanne's world is shattered. Take her there walk the sands mender around and talk. I always think the sea gives you a calmness in your heart. And Charles Suzanne's spirit is shatterd. we can mend it back with love with prayer with holiness. There is so many miracles that happen every day Please don't give up

Oh DEAR OH DEAR, who pays for this bunch of numpties?
I do hope its not the tax payer.
They waste time and money banning an ad for jaffa cakes and maltesers but allow hundreds of ads which are blatant lies to be shown.
Of course having seen these ads already, I will now change to a diet consisting solely of maltesers and jaffa cakes , its bound to help lose weight as there is so little fat in them.

Watching the ads can seriously damage your mental health!

Just ban all adverts and have done with it.

I don't normally support bans but I would be glad to see the back of all this inane, infantile drivel---and the moronic arguments as to what is and is not acceptable.

Joanna,

I've got a lovely recipe for a chocolate fridge cake laced with Maltesers if anyone wants it.

I'm not saying that its healthy, mind. A minute on the lips, forever on the hips, but its worth it! :D

AJ Fife,

Joanna,

Boy Wonder is the man for the recipes! I'm sure he'll come up with something better than a chocolate fridge. Do you have many edible appliances about the hoose?

Charles

Good morning to you and your DYW.

Boy Wonder has nothing better to do but harrass you and garden in his kilt - "dress regimental" - and frighten the neighbour children with the alarming spectacle.

These fats in these confections are probably containing trans-fats which are very unhealthy and clog the arteries.

Here in Canada, trans-fats have been BANNED for years!

When will Great Britain, and especially Scotland, get with the programme?
17

TheSmith,

We are not daft. We know that eating a normal portion of jaffa cakes (i.e. the whole box) isn't going to be low in fat.

Another attack of the nanny state food fascists. First we hear Marmite is banned in children's nurseries, now this, what next...Deep fried mars bars I suppose.

I don't have edible appliances like a chocolate fridge but do I have names for some of the appliances: Jimmy the Hoover, Phil the kettle, Rupert the Fridge and Roger the washing machine.

lol

AJ

Not too many just the chocolate fridge - I did have a chip pan but threw it out because I needed more than one chip.

I understand that they're fattening now as well.... who would ever have guessed. What about lard sandwiches are they on the list of banned foods yet?

The Health Authorities are not trying to control your life. They are trying to prolong it and maybe even save it so you can enjoy a healthy old age.

But, if some persist in eating VERY unhealthy confections and snacks, they have only themselves to blame if they suffer a debilitating stroke or heart attach or the final blow of DEATH.

So, go ahead and have your deep fried Mars bars and damn the consequences.

Best of luck in the ICU.

The real dracula,

16/10/2008 23:31:49
Tim that is peoples own choice . You can inform them of unhealthy foods but they can choose to keep eating them.
I dont think there are many people who dont realise chips , McD's , pizzas etc are fattening but you absolutely cant make them sto eating them , only they can do that.

Maltesers and jaffa cakes are the lesser of some of the fattening products.
