SCOTTISH Parliament bosses have spent more than £50,000 on revamping the exhibition in the public entrance foyer of the Holyrood building.
New features include a new touch-screen display, audio commentary, a model of the chamber and better access for children and wheelchair users.

But MSPs have questioned why such a large amount of money should be spent updating the exhibition just t
hree and a half years after the parliament opened.

The exhibition, which charts the history of the parliament and explains how it works, can be seen by anyone visiting the parliament.

Consultants forecast in 2002 the parliament building would attract up to 700,000 visitors a year in the first three years.

But official figures show there were 371,755 visitors in 2005-6, the first full financial year at Holyrood, 317,755 in 2006-7 and 345,802 in 2007-8.

The revamp, which has re-used glass display cases from the original exhibition, was carried out under a £56,000 contract which also covers maintenance if necessary.

But senior SNP backbencher Alex Neil said: "I don't see what was wrong with what was there before. It had only been in since the parliament opened. Why the rush to change it beats me.

"There are many other things which are a much higher priority for spending money on.

"The parliament's IT system, for instance, gets more shambolic almost every day."

Lothians Tory MSP Gavin Brown was also shocked by the cost of the exhibition revamp. "It does sound a huge amount of money," he said.

"First impressions are important, but it would be useful to know how many repeat visitors we are getting.

"It seems to me a lot of people would visit the parliament once and probably not again for a while. If a restaurant has a lot of customers who keep coming back, it has to refresh the menu.

"We need to keep the exhibition fresh, but we don't need to spend vast sums on it and if most people are seeing it for the first time, the original exhibition would be perfectly valid."

However, the parliament defended the decision to "refresh" the exhibition.

A spokeswoman said: "Since opening to the public more than three and a half years ago, the parliament has welcomed in excess of 1.5 million visitors, the majority of which are residents of Scotland. Visitors want to learn more about the parliament and the exhibition plays an important part in achieving this.

"Naturally, after an election we need to replace some of the material in our exhibition. In doing so we have taken the opportunity to refresh the existing exhibition, making improvements in line with feedback we have received from the public.

"The £56,000 contract includes the design, manufacture and installation of all of the elements within the new display, including the interactive plasma screen, audio units, etc."

1. I think you may be right ...

I voted for the SP thinking it may bring a better understanding of local issues ... its just turned out to have been a gravy train for the public sector and their mates at our expense. This is an extra layer of beaurocracy - typical example of Labours 'Job creation ' schemes ... suck the taxpayer dry and get jobs for the boys.

The SP either needs to be totally disbanded OR they need to go it alone. One or the other. I suspect the home truths of independence would make it a pre-requisite that the government stopped wasting money or go bust ... maybe that is a good thing.

#1 Thouroughly agree. Disband the "pretendy parliament" and have an Independent Parliament.

Aye, aye. The bawbies are safe with SNP. Not.

While I wholeheartedly agree that an independent Scottish parliament is to be preferred to the shambles we have just now, we would have to ensure that numpties such as Alexander, Crawford, Fergusson and Finnie are excluded.

#4 Rulesbutnotrulers - showing yourself to be a know nothing t!t as usual. The parliament bosses have nothing to do with SNP or any party for that matter. They are just given a budget and the get on with things.

If you really want to use this story to slate a party then slate the party who gave the contract to them, who would be ....ehh, hummm, ehhh....oh yeh.Labour.

First impressions are important, so when do they start on the outside !!!!

Another non-story from Swanson on the parliament spending money on a building we should be proud of - stop sniping like a bunch of pre-20th century fishwives and enjoy the building (which our foreign visitors love though we are stuck in a time-warp of dour Scottishness). Thank god Gaudi wasn't a Scot or Barcelona would probably look like Glenrothes, get a life please :)

It's heading straight for us!,

Edinburgh 20/05/2008 12:33:10
How many of the people who whinge on about the parliament have actually visited the place?

1. there is an excellent cafe which is reasonably priced compared with some of the 'Rip offs' further up the high street.

2. They had a FREE creche which NO ONE used! it was totally free and well staffed and equipped and was empty - i think they had to close it down

3. The exibition space is well laid out - there are some interesting exhibits

4. The exterior space is fantastic is summer - our kids had a brilliant time playing in the water and at no point did some stuffy jobsworth tell us off - even when they fell in and ended up nearly starkers!

In the parliament we have a daring engaging public space that Scots can feel pride in - so what if the numpties in charge are an embarresment we can un-elect them. for god sake stop whining about the parliament - change the record!

so they have to update the exhibition space? so what? ...try buying a computer and watch it become almost obscolete within 3 years...its better to spend money on this than honesty-box sarnies? Surely?

If MSP's think £50odd K is a waste of money - how do they think those of us who never wanted a Scottish Parliament in the first place feel.

My applause to #7 Bob2 - "First impressions are important, so when do they start on the outside !!!!" I totally agree.

#8 The Central Scutinizor - You've obviously not been with me when I've accompanied foreign visitors to the building. MOST of their reactions at first sight of the parliment building have been aghast! Some have been too polite to say anything chosing not to say anything at all but those who have spoken up have all conveyed the same thing.... Disgust, horror, disbelief etc. etc. etc. I also disagree with you comment that we should be proud of the building. I don't believe anyone should be telling anyone that they SHOULD be proud of that building. You speak of our dour Scottishness but believe it or not people come to Edinburgh to see just that, it's our history and I believe people come to see the history and not the absurd (except for maybe festival time)

Horrible building full of horrible politicians. If it fell down tomorrow. Who would notice? Who would care? Not me. That place is just full of jobsworths sticking their noses into my business. I can think of only 2 things they have achieved. 1/ The death of the local Pub ( the smoking ban) 2/ All roads covered with dead foxes ( the hunting ban ) Well worth the Gizillions this place has cost us. Never mind, at least it created well paid jobs for those who could not cut it in the big parliment.

But #12 THE BPRENTICE.. the question is, with schools suffering, pensioners dying because they can't get the medications they need and the massive expense of the tram and other "projects" draining our pockets doesn't it seem that if there's £56k available to spend could it not be used in more IMPORTANT ways? My mother instilled in me at an early age... you don't need to fix it if it isn't broken. In other words... put your money, time and energy into something more important.
19

The Central Scutinizor,

20/05/2008 13:23:34
#16 WKKB...'some have been too polite to say anything' - probably 'too polite' because you initially start by spewing forth your own vitriol/opinion on the building before they even have a chance to decide for themselves - your experience is not my own when it comes to foreign visitors ' disgust, horror, disbelief' - I don't believe that for a second, c'mon!
I'm certainly not saying don't enjoy all the traditional buildings and great history we have, just that we expand our small country mentality to take in more modern concepts also
20

Voldemort,

Edinburgh 20/05/2008 13:52:32
17 ... yup, that just about sums it up !

19 ... you should take a look at the parliament building on the Faroe Islands. It is great to look at, people are proud of it and it cost ... well lets say you'd get about 400 of them to one of ours ! I guess what I am saying that small governments don't tend to waste their citizens money on ridiculous projects.

Anyway that's not the point it is just that the parliament has achieved nothing but shafting the common man going about his normal business and spending money as if there is no tomorrow.

Scotish Exile,

ugliest building in scotland by a mile and it houses some of the biggets brain dead numpties in scotland too, board it up and let them starve, no one would miss them....does the country grind to a halt when they all b*gger off on holiday for the entire summer....No....says it all
22

The Former Mr. Angry,

Perth 20/05/2008 16:38:20
At the moment the place is just a hot air generator with few contributions of value except in the comedy department from Ms Alexander and some estimable performances by Mr Salmond and Ms Sturgeon. We should either have a full-blown parliament so we can deal with our own affairs and make the politicians perform or just scrap the whole edifice which looks anyway like a 60s nighmare with bits of Lego stuck on it. Imagine paying £400M for that - oh yes, we just did.

Get over it. Ask any of the comparable attractions in Edinburgh how much it costs to display an exhibition and you'll realise this was good value for money... I saw it the other day and think it's great - a vast improvement on the last one, from what I remember.

Have any of you whingers actually seen the new exhibition? No, I thought not. You just thought you'd spew out some of your poison for the sake of it.

Why don't you stop complaining and do something creative for once... Like go jump off a cliff or something. Leave those of us with a positive outlook on life to get on with it.
25

AntiEdinburghWhingers,

20/05/2008 18:32:46
Ian Swanson: if you jumped off a cliff I don't think investigative journalism as a profession would suffer much. If anything, we might get a proper journalist who actually talked about things that mattered, rather than relied on Freedom of Information requests to do their work for them. So pathetic.

OK, the building is not to everyone's taste (why should it be? Could it ever have been?), but that was A LONG TIME AGO! LETS MOVE ON, PEOPLE!
26

AntiEdinburghWhingers,

How much do they charge visitors?

I expect they have raked in very much more than £56K since the place opened. And that income should rightly go to maintaining and improving the "visitor experience".

Having worked in various heritage/visitor centres I think £56k is a bargain
28

Lang Spoon,

Leith 20/05/2008 19:47:17
That building wll stand for the rest of its (hopefully short) existence as a monument to the folly of letting one man get his own way in choosing the architect and the site. I had a lot of time for the late Mr Dewar, but, had he lived, his political career would have been ended abruptly by this fiasco. He was walking on water at the time, and no-one was prepared to stand up to him.

So whose brother-in-law got the contract for this 'refurbishment'?
