Leith Walk a one-way street for trams work

Published Date: 08 May 2008
LEITH WALK is to be made a one-way street as part of the latest batch of trams roadworks. The temporary move means traffic will be able to travel southbound on Leith Walk, but northbound vehicles will be diverted on to Easter Road.
Tram firm TIE today said it was still deciding if the whole street or just sections of Leith Walk would be made one-way, but it is understood the works will get under way in July and last up to four weeks.

The road needs to be reduced to one side
because engineers need to work on moving utility services which cross the road rather than travel vertically. TIE said it was still finalising the details of the diversions but was aiming to keep disruption to a minimum.

Traders today predicted the move will bring even more misery for businesses on Leith Walk as well as creating gridlock on Easter Road, which will have to cope with dozens of extra buses.

Gordon Burgess, a spokesman for the newly-formed Leith Walk and Constitution Street Traders Association, said: "It is just going to be another problem on top of the countless others.

"Again the problem is with communication. Little bits of information like this are slipping out but without the detail, and we need to be able to plan for things like deliveries.

"There is no doubt this will have a major impact in Leith and it is not something we can sustain over a long period of time."

Another problem drivers and shoppers are having to contend with is the partial closure of Constitution Street, which is not due to reopen until September.

Around 80 businesses and 2000 residents are affected by these diversions, though it is thought at least double that will be affected by making Leith Walk one-way. Duke Street is scheduled to return to two-way traffic in early July.

Bill Campbell, Lothian Buses operations director said: "Many of our bus services currently use Leith Walk and we also operate services on Easter Road.

"A closure of Leith Walk in either direction is bound to cause some disruption. We are, however, confident that with careful diversion planning, as has been achieved with the closure of Shandwick Place, we can minimise these delays."

Leith Walk has been one of the worst-affected streets during work on the £508 million tram line, with traders claiming they are losing thousand of pounds of business due to the disruption.

Last week, council leader Jenny Dawe ordered officials to investigate the possibility of offering 100 per cent rate rebates to some businesses to boost the current deal, which only provides average compensation of 20 per cent.

A spokeswoman for TIE said the company was working with all of its stakeholders to finalise the programme for Leith Walk's one-way system, and added it would try to keep disruption to a minimum.

'TIE said it was still finalising the details of the diversions' REALLY? Since when did TIE (a private - if Cooncil owned - company) have the power to make such decisions? Or has the arrogant tail now come out into the open with its wagging of the dog?
Does the legal power to make a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order to impose such arrangements not rest with the City of Edinburgh Council, as statutory Roads Authority in terms of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984? And are they not legally obliged to consider the suitability of alternative routes - like ALL the Leith Walk buses down Easter Road?? Are TIE a law unto themselves?
But remember, folks, you heard this story from Thomas a week past Wednesday!

Easter Road is gridlocked at the best of times.

Has any of these "planners" even visited Leith Walk/Easter road.

You'll be quicker walking

So North Bound Buses will go
York place
Picardy Place/Leith Walk
London Road
Easter Road
Duke Street?

Sounds like Chaos

And how will The Easter Road/London Road junction cope with this.

Never mind Easter Road, which is narrow enough, presume they'll have to ban parking.

Good luck to the Shop Owners on Easter Road.

This may be a big project, but TIE have clearly under estimated the work and time involved.

The TRAM story just get more interesting every day.

If the street is ordinarily two-way, and TIE were considering a no-way street, then one way seems a good compromise (if it's the right way). After all, they could have fought for it and this flapjack is stale.
17

Hibernia,

OK heres a small suggestion - the trams work is a right royal pain in the a**, we are all only to well aware of that, but how about for the duration of the upheaval the koonsul stop doing other unimportant roadworks etc that cause even more hassle onto a journey that we already have to suffer.
18

Goat Boy,

EN recently reported (5 May) “Latest figures released by the city council under freedom of information laws show emissions levels across the city have got worse.
Among the new pollution hotspots are EASTER ROAD and Bernard Street in Leith, together with Roseburn Terrace.”

So to make matters worse, they force even MORE traffic along these routes. More traffic, more congestion, more pollution and more noise.
19

Hibernia,

08/05/2008 13:12:35
#19 course the emissions are worse, on almost every journey around Edinburgh, and I am not including just the city centre but the outskirts too, there are roadworks of some description.

I work out at Gorgie and they are installing a new pedestrian crossing inbetween 2 current pedestrian crossings which means they have reduced the road to one lane and 3 sets of pedestrian crossings in a 500 yard stretch of road. Get a grip council there is no need for yet another crossing on this stretch of road except to cause more misery for people that travel in vehicles.

Quite right No.19, to have roadworks on Broughton Road and Ferry Road whilst Leith Walk is being done is nothing less than sabotage !! For the council to blame utility companies is an abrogation of their responsability to provide a safe environment for people to live and work in.
For Transco to be permitted to dig new holes every week on Dundas St. for the past year is ridiculous !!! Are they using that street as a training centre for inept navvies ?

How CAN the Cooncil allow this chaos? If TIE have to apply for a traffic order, then the condition of granting it should be that the work is done 7 am to 11pm. I know this will upset residents but at least the disturbance and mess will be done quicker.
35

Rv2!,

08/05/2008 15:45:33
The council should see this as a direct and important reason to re-widen Easter Road. Recently they built our kerbing and blocked bus stops to ensure the road would come to a stop when buses stopped. To make this even more likely to kill the traffic they added some new islands directly beside the bus stops.

Overall a completely mad and pointless exercise, which it is now time to reverse.

Well we all know who is to blame for allowing this chaos - the SNP - the party that promised in it's manifesto to scrap the tram project - then when in power - allowed it. Anyone who voted for these clowns should hang their head in shame. Salmond and the rest of his comedians have done nothing but tell lie after lie to get into government - then change their minds. Fortunately I have a lot of common sense and could see that their manifesto was nothing but lies. Roll on the next election!!

No. 41 - the SNP knew that if they were to get into power their promise of scrapping the trams was not going to happen - so they shouldn't have put it in their election promises in the first place. Unfortunately the gullible public voted for them thinking the project would be scrapped. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence could see the SNP manifesto was not possible, and should have placed their cross elsewhere. As I say - the SNP are totally to blame for this mess - they promised to scrap the tram project - and failed at the first hurdle - roll on the next election - cheerio Alex!!

It is becoming clearer with every press release that TIE told clear untruths when it submitted its business plan. Remember no more than seven sets of works, each less than 200 yards long? Minimal disruption? They will have known fine well they had NO CHANCE of building this on time and on budget this way.

It is time that the EEN got off its backside and did a proper analysis of this farcical project.

I have been commenting on this tram topic since it started being reported on these pages quite some time ago.

In this time, my opinion that this tram LINE should never have been concieved in the first place has changed not one bit, not one bit.

I'm no clairvoyant, but all the things that I thought would happen if this silly project were to actually go ahead would appear to be coming true.

Local businesses being severely affected was obvious, and just look at the incredible dispespect the perpretators of this shambolic project are showing to the local traders - it's sickening, nothing more, nothing less.

Now look at this fine City, a historic, well-built, gem of a City, a capital City which is now being carved-up and scarred forever.

Look at it's residents, the very people who make this City great, their everyday lives are being inconvenienced beyond belief, not only now but in the decades to come.

It was a very sad day for Edinburgh when the SNP were forced to concede in this tram battle, a very sad day indeed.

The only real way this town can be saved from financial oblivion and physical destruction is for this disgraceful tram project to halted with immediate effect.

Not only this, but Scotland can then spare itself from having constructed a tram LINE which turns out to be it's national disgrace...

So gridlocked Easter Road becomes a non-stop traffic jam. The pollution gets worse. Oh, and if Duke Street won't reopen until July, and this diversion starts in June, where is all the traffic going?

And let's not forget something rather important;

It's only a few years since the Albion Road rail bridge was closed because the weight of the traffic was too heavy for it to bear!

So I'd avoid driving over it when the diversions arrive.

All tram haters should consider what else they would have to moan about without the trams. I hope they also refuse to use them as a point of principal when they eventually arrive. The long duration and scale of the disruptions is a clear indication of the age of the infrastructure. Central Edinburgh is becoming stagnant, resting on its festival laurels. We need change.

I hope they also refuse to use them as a point of principal when they eventually arrive.

That is not the point : it is the number of citizens of the City who the trams will benefit.
Given the status quo with bus services I will be able to travel ( as now) to
Leith,Ocean Terminal , Princes Street , Newington , Lothian Road, Corstorphine , Morningside, Colinton ,ERI, Portobello etc using buses which pass within 300 yards of my house.
The nearest tram will be around two miles away.
I therefore will reap no benefit from this " tourist attraction"
64

Rv2!,

09/05/2008 13:35:08
How can this city which was meant to have the best public transport system in the country (ie the buses) be allowed to fail like this?

If the bus system was so good, why the need for trams?

Why not simply encourage the buses to become greener?

Why not re-widen the roads to allow the buses to park
properly when loading and unloading?

Why? Because successful transport is NOT the purpose of these trams. This is a big PR job which will probably look and run OK by 2020. What everyone think right now doesn't matter. The trams are going to be the death of Edinburgh. They do not fit into the streets or cover a large enough area, so cannot be considered useful to the city.

The trams should be cancelled and replaced by green buses. While we're at it, replace the government and the bloody council.

'I hope they also refuse to use them as a point of principal when they eventually arrive.'

I have already vowed a long time ago that I will NEVER, EVER set foot on one of the trams.

As for the 'when they eventually arrive' part of your statement, my wish and desire is that the project falls flat on it's face and that we will never see any of these infernal things blighting the streets of Edinburgh.

The only sad part of that wish of mine is that squandering £600 million may be the only way to actually have the trams booted into touch...
