THE BBC issued the latest in a string of apologies yesterday after TV star John Barrowman exposed himself during a live radio show.

The Glasgow-born star of the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood performed the act during an interview on the Radio 1 Switch programme aired on Sunday evening.

Though only one complaint was received about the incident, a BBC spokeswoman admitted that
the show had "overstepped the mark", and they made an official apology. Barrowman also issued his own apology yesterday for any offence his behaviour had caused.

The West End actor said "light-hearted" banter went too far – and promised it would never happen again. He added: "I apologise for any offence I have caused. I was joining in the light-hearted and fun banter of the show and went too far. I was wrong to do this and it will never happen again.

"I really appreciate the great support I have received from the BBC over the last few years and would never intentionally do anything to undermine the integrity of the corporation."

The incident was triggered during the show, which is presented by Nick Grimshaw and Annie Mac, when Grimshaw asked Barrowman: "You're famous, we're told, for getting your willy out in interviews. Is this going to happen today?"

Barrowman responded by asking: "Is the webcam on?", and when he was told it was, he said he was going to "get it out", amid shouting and laughter.

Annie Mac apologised on air at the end of the programme for any offence the incident may have caused. However, a BBC spokeswoman followed up the on-air apology with a further clarification: "We do feel that the programme overstepped the mark. We acknowledge this and apologised at the end of the live programme."

The BBC stressed that nothing untoward was screened over the internet via the studio webcam, and the show was removed from the BBC iPlayer, which normally lets users listen to radio broadcasts for up to a week after transmission.

The Radio 1 spokeswoman said that it was felt it would be inappropriate for the broadcast still to be available online.

The incident comes in the wake of the investigation into the prank phone calls made to Andrew Sachs by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand, for Brand's Radio 2 show. Thousands of complaints followed.

IN QUOTES

DURING Sunday's show, presented by Nick Grimshaw and Annie Mac, Grimshaw asked Barrowman: "You're famous, we're told, for getting your willy out in interviews.

"Is this going to happen today?"

Barrowman responded by saying he was going to "get it out", amid shouting and laughter.

He was later heard to say: "I didn't take the whole thing out, but I got my fruit and nuts out."

Now were he hetero-sexual, wonder what the reactions would have been? hmmmm! Knotty one that. Time that those who run the Beeb were booted to somewhere where the sun doesn't shine.A general protest by all who pay license fees refusing to pay might get their attention? That would bring out the goon squads of 'soldier beaters', the armed offenders squad and space would undoubtably be found in prison for all of them! UK gone barmy!

Mr Barrowman is notorious for having a big membrum virile, and obviously it is important that this sort of thing is properly slapped down. A stiff response is rightly called for.

Apparently you can't say willie with a y in the Scotsman comment box. But you can say it in Latin. Is this the new puritanism, or just that very, very old kind?

#1 Why the surprise there used to be ventriloqusts on the radio! Maybe in years gone by this clown would have been playing Archie Andrews.

I think it was more to do with Barrowman asking Grimshaw to "look him in the eye"....

Strange that you say that since it's the SNP that are forging ahead massively with your beloved renewables and Labour are trying to put the brakes on.

It's the SNP that are exploring all the option including your beloved sub-marine turbines etc.

Yes Rules, the SNP are doing something more positive for this country than you can imagine with regards renewables yet you think they are numpties.

Who is the REAL numptie Rules?

Firstly, this is typical of the stupidity that has long been the norm on radio 1 and is now making inroads into Radio 2 as well.

Secondly, name the person who complained and shame them. He/She is clearly bonkers.

Thirdly, why did the BBC apologise? What they should have done is published the letter of complaint, then we could have all had a good laugh.

It is high time that this arrogant, bloated, so-called "public service broadcaster" was cut down to size or axed.
Much of its output is rubbish, and could easily be produced by others.
Moreover we are all forced to pay a tax for it (and their idiot stars) under threat of imprisonment.
Other than Sport, its output is heavily biased in violation of its Charter.
A more appropriate name for this organisation would be Al Beeb-ZaNu Labor Pravda.

I don't care how enormous his "membrum virile" is and why he has this compulsion to display it at the drop of a zipper, but it just shows that Barrowman is a one-talent idiot and most of his brains - if not all - are centred below his belt.

What a sad excuse for a man. I suppose he impresses the ladies and many of the men but one day, when he can't get it up, his ONE claim to fame will have withered and lay there useless and ignored.

He was an annoying, overexposed prat before this escapade - but why on earth would anyone complain if they couldn't see it? Did the presenters describe it in intimate detail?

If you don't like it, don't continue funding them. Join the tv license boycott and save yourself from the low brow "British popular culture" as exemplified by this Baffoon Barrowman (whom I must confess I've never heard of him since I dont watch tv, and all the better for it).

Ah... Radio. This is R-A-D-I-O. You CAN'T expose yourself on radio.

The one complainer aught to have his or her radio privies taken away until he or she grows new skin.

I'm sure all the people calling for its abolishment never watch anything on the BBC of course....

Why such a stushie over something that couldn't be seen?

Modern Britain has gone bonkers.
