Labour suffered humiliation in the local elections tonight after the party lost its four remaining county councils to the Tories.
Nottinghamshire was the last to fall as the Conservatives took control gaining nine seats while Labour – which had held the council since 1981 – lost 22.

Earlier Derbyshire fell after 28 years of rule, while Labour was also beaten by the Conservatives in Lancashire and Staffordshire.

Overall, Labour appeared to be heading for total losses of around 300 seats while the Conservatives picked up more than 200.

Labour lost 16 seats in Derbyshire as the Conservatives gained 19 to take an eye-catching victory.

In Lancashire, Labour lost 25 seats as the Tories picked up 18 to turn
the red-rose county blue. It is the first time since 1981 that Labour has lost control of that council.

The British National Party also picked up its first English county council seat in Lancashire, with Sharon Wilkinson defeating Labour's Marcus Johnstone in the Padiham and Burnley West ward.

Staffordshire also fell to the Tories as they soared past the 32 seats needed to claim a majority, and were predicting a landslide victory there as Labour and the Liberal Democrats failed to make inroads.

Elsewhere in the country Labour was trounced in the battle for Lincolnshire County Council, losing 17 seats as the Tories gained 15 and increased their strong hold on the authority.

It also failed to gain a single councillor in newly-formed Central Bedfordshire, where the Tories took 54 of the 66 seats up for grabs.

And the party lost eight seats in Bristol as the Liberal Democrats took overall control of the city.

Elections for 34 English councils comprising 2,318 council seats took place yesterday with results slowly coming through today.

There were also three mayoral contests in Doncaster, North Tyneside and Hartlepool.

Tory leader David Cameron told activists in Devon his party was winning seats all over the country as early counting took place.

The Tories picked up Somerset County Council from the Liberal Democrats, gaining 11 seats as the Liberal Democrats lost nine and Labour's representation was halved from four to two.

They also gained control of Devon from the Lib Dems, winning enough seats to claim victory on the county council before all results were declared.

"You can see the Conservative Party strong, united and positive, winning in every part of our country," Mr Cameron said.

Mr Brown said yesterday's elections had been "a painful defeat for Labour".

He told reporters in Downing Street: "I am here to be totally candid, to accept my responsibilities and to set out what I intend to do.
"The elections yesterday were a painful defeat for Labour. Too many good people doing so much good for their communities and their constituencies have lost through no fault of their own."

The chair of the Liberal Democrat local election campaign Andrew Stunell insisted that they had been good results for the party.

"We have held our own against a resurgent Conservative party in the south, making gains in Essex, Surrey and Hertfordshire among others and have taken seats from the Labour party across the country," he said.

"With 28% of the vote, we have convincingly beaten the Labour party into third place, consolidating our position as the second party of local government."

Lets face it - the English want Labour out! England is drifting further and further to the right and the longer Labour hang on the further to the right and more extreme they will get!

The Fib Dummers are stuck in a rut and even got slaughtered in thier west country heartlands. The English Labour Party in the North is publicly blaming the sleazebags in London for its misfortunes and all we get from the Labour Party in Scotland and the Gray man is more bleating or silence!

Broonies response is to install more unelected and unaccountable peers in his Cabinet! It appears as if his running away to Normandy will only delay his own D-Day.

Labour looses all County Council seats.

Yet more quality journalism from Johnston Press staff!
There's only one 'o' in loses. Is it ignorance (poor education), or incompetence (lack of proofing ability) which leads to such sloppy journalism?

It's not surprising that there's no 'by line', this item was probably lifted from some English 'Tabloid'!

There's also no reference to the fact that the County Council seats are all ENGLISH; perhaps the journalist (used lightly) believes that the County Council elections were national.

Against the background of Labour losing control of every county council in England, Fuhrer Brown declares that he has work to do do and that he will stand resolute.

Save for being an MP, our un-elected Prime Minister dispalays all the hallmarks of a third world dictator who will not subit to the wishes of the epople.

Corruption, cash for honours, electoral fraud, pensions for pals - and a desire to reinforce the powers of the state - we ignore such fascism at ourt peril!

#3 Well, if all you have in the Commons are has beens, never will bes, and people who's expenses have been, er, embarrassingly large...., what on earth can you do except put a whole great load of your mates into the Lords and by-pass this irritating democracy thing.

The added advantage of this is that they won't have to face questions in the Commons, just a few half dead old aristos in the Lords who will have forgotten the question they asked before the answer is forthcoming...

You know...

Q: " And what is the Noble Lord going to do about unemployment?"

A: Tuesday, my Lords.

Still only another year and at least most of our business is carried out with a properly elected government in Edinburgh.

"I'm getting on with the job in hand" is one of New Labour's mantras, to be trotted out ad nauseum by ministers when they are facing awkward questions that they would rather not answer directly. Others include " we need to listen to what the public is telling us", "we need to to reconnect with the people" and "a vote for the SNP is a vote for the Tories"

3 council by elections yesterday. Labour got 5897, SNP got 3986. In the same wards 2 years ago, Labour had 10911, SNP got 4444. This is a massive swing to the SNP, which Grey hails as a victory. These results point to the SNP having DOUBLE the number of votes when the Euro votes are counted!

For all that Labour has suffered a rout in the council elections the swing from Labour to the Tories if applied to the Westminster vote would result in a Tory majority of 24.

If I was a Tory, or a tartan Tory, (who both want Dave for PM) I'd not be getting too complacent.

I heard the BBC reporting that the SNP had lost these councils to Labour, the way that this was portrayed was that The SNP had previously held these councils.

It seems that New Labour will use all sorts of Skull Murphery to enhance their place in politics.

X VOTE SNP X
INDEPENDENCE FROM WESTMINSTER

You surely dont expect honest reporting from the EBC now do you? They having kittens over the fact that thier precious Labour Party lost 250 seats. Apoplectic about the fact that even the BNP nad the Cornish Nationalist Party managed to gain seats!

re10

Actually that figure of 24 which I suspect you got from the Pro Labour BBC is a figure based on a heavily manipulated set of statistics, a brief analysis of the results and you see that Tory gains were extremely focused - it suggests they will obtain a considerably larger majority than that, especially if you take into account the electoral disater that befell the Fib Dummers in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall!

You are right..being complacent would actually mean that calamity Brown had a strategy and that is plainly ridiculous.

The Tories should be making plans to govern you as soon as possible!

What you fail to understand is that if 100% of Scotland voted labour you are still heading for an English Tory government and it is all thanks to the Labour party and in particular the spectacular failure of the Scottish element.

Will be a long time before any Glasgow smelly socks are sitting in cabinet seats in Westminster again methinks!

Just don't get it do you. Have a look at the council map in England..Tory blue all through and through.

YOU want the Tories and not the Nats and never forget it...YOU will accept Tory rule rather than a left of centre Scottish party...you are more Tory than you think eejit!

Just listening to the poisonous Lorraine Davidson on Radio 5, if there was not a civil war in the Labour Party - well there is now. Some of the langauge she has been using in relation to Purnell, Flint, Blears etc is intemperate to say the least. Broonies attack dog by any chance?

Lib Dem Counsillors: 439

Labour Councillors in England: 159

Got to hand it to your average Englishman/Englishwoman they are miles ahead of 'some' of the deluded and frankly slavish Scots..fair play to them!
