THE International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established by the UN Security Council in May 1993.
Based in The Hague, it was the first international body for the prosecution of war crimes since the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials after the Second World War.

The tribunal has jurisdiction over individuals responsible for genocide, war crimes and cri
mes against humanity in the territory of the former Yugoslavia after 1 January, 1991. So far it has indicted 161 people. At present, 38 indicted war criminals are in custody in The Hague.

There are 27 people currently on trial. Seventeen others are at various stages of proceedings and dozens of others have been passed to courts in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia.

Two people are at still at large – Radovan Karadzic's military commander, Ratko Mladic, also charged with the genocide of Bosnian Muslims and Goran Hadzic, a Croatian Serb official, indicted for planning the murder and deportation of hundreds of non-Serbs in the self-declared Republic of Serbian Krajina in Croatia.

Slobodan Milosevic, the former Yugoslav president, died in detention in March 2006, just months before a verdict was due in his four-year trial.

Radislav Krstic, commander of the Bosnian Serb army's Drina Corps in 1995, was the first person convicted of genocide by the court, in August 2001. He was jailed for 46 years, but his sentence was reduced to 35, and the offence cut to one of aiding and abetting genocide.

Former Bosnian Serb army commander Vidoje Blagojevic was also found guilty, in 2005, of aiding and abetting genocide, and sentenced to 18 years.

Milan Babic, ex-leader of the rebel Serbs in Croatia's Krajina region, was jailed for 13 years in 2004 for his role in the ethnic cleansing of almost 80,000 Croats in 1991. He committed suicide in 2006.

Vojislav Seselj, leader of Serbia's Radical Party, is on trial on charges including the murder, torture and persecution of non-Serbs.

W Smith,

So Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic are "still at large" then eh?

After thirteen years!

George Bush is getting criticised for many things including not catching Osama Bin Laden ater 7 years as President.

Meanwhile in Europe the various Secret Services of the EU countries are struggling to find these Serbian thugs.

BTW
Anti-NATO, fifth columnist Leftie Alex Salmond and his Jihadist sidekick Osama Saeed should take note.

It was NATO that stepped in to stop the slaughter of muslims after UN dutch troops basically abandoned their posts and allowed 8,000 muslim men and boys to be executed.

Meanwhile the arab muslim countries did not lift a finger.

As a Leftie Salmond believes the UN is the answer to every conflict but in this case it was NATO'S military might that made the real difference.

THIS IS THE SAME NATO THAT IS GOING TO MAKE SURE AFGHAN MUSLIM GIRLS GET ACCESS TO EDUCATION WHILE OSAMA SAEED RAGES!

Some of us are on to you Mr Salmond.

What 8000 people?People are manipulating badly with that number! Are you sure that there were 8000 people?Who are they? Can you give me their names?Show the graves?NATO forces are killing innocent people around the world, and UN is no better, the biggest terrorist organization controlled by US,everyone knows that.Check this website: http://www.srpska-mreza.com/Bosnia/Srebrenica/index.html

Chris,

UN peacekeeping troops are under strict rules on the use of force; retaliation is a grey area. They can use force to defend themselves if under attack, but that is all. The Dutch were, therefore, powerless to stop the massacre at Srebenica, just as the Belgians and French were in Rwanda.

#3 LillyAugusta: The answer to your questions is yes, it is both documented on paper and on film. The UN knew exactly how many men, women and children were in the concentration camp, and how many remained afterwards. Have a look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3999985.stm and then accuse your own government of "manipulating badly".

The UN is not controlled by the US - that is why countries like Russia and China can veto proposals. The US may, perhaps, be accused of manipulating the UN, but they do not control that organisation.

Where are the evidence?I can't see them.Serbian governments are controlled by US and EU,just to let you know. The UN is not controlled by US-oh,wake up and smell the coffee...Fortunately,there are countries like Russia and China who can veto, but sometimes even that won't stop US...Chris,do you know how many people Naser Oric killed?

Bemused and above it all,

01/08/2008 11:13:56
All sides were at fault, the fact we are chasing only one is very wrong and stoking up trouble for the future.
Lilly, Krstic and his men dug up a grave yard, dug a pit, put bodies in it, shelled them, booby trapped the pit, THEN SKINT BEARS AND PUT THE PAWS IN!, before replacing the soil and original graves. This was to cover up what they had done, the Bears paws apparently look like a human hand and confuse the forensic people who need to spend time checking if it was human. That was done just to mess with the heads of the forensic teams. That level of planning is not an act of war.

Good points.

Let's also not forget Salmond's shameful "unpardonable folly" comments when Blair, etc wanted to help Kosovo.

"Justice" seems to be, to put it politely, a questionable word to put in the headline. The article fails to point out that the UN Charter specifically reserves the setting up of war crimes courts to the General assembly not the security council (which is essentially dominated by NATO members). The "court" is thus itself fraudulent. What it does point out is that the "court's" duty is to bring all war criminals to trial not merely Serbian "Untermensch". There is considerable doubt about the guilt of most of the Serbs brough to "trial".

In the very 1st case the allegedly murdered father of the chief prosecution witness walked into court to testify for the defence, at which point the witness admitted large gentlementhe Moslem secret police had coached him - for being innocent the Serb defendent was sentenced to 20 years. A real court would have subsequently disallowed all evidence from people subject the Bosnian Nazi intimidation. Milosevic, who was indicted on NATO instruction 2 weeks after NATO started bombing, found in 4 1/2 years of "trial" the prosecution could produce no evidence & he had to be poisoned in jail. Similarly Seselj, mentioned above, was only indicted 2 long after the war & 2 weeks before his party was about to win the election - it then took a year before the "court" was able to cobble together the actual charges against him.

Officially the court is not supposed to be racist. Legally the prime war crime "from which all other war crimes flow" to quote the Nuremberg court is planning & launching an aggressive war. There is no slightest doubt that NATO's bombing was an aggressive & criminal war - even the UK Parliament has admitted that. Therefore as a matter of law most NATO politicians, including much of the UK Parliament, are war criminals. If this "court" were even attempting to appear less than a totally corrupt racist pro-Nazi show trial they would have no option but to indict most leading NATO politicians - which might be embarrassing sinc

Neil,

which might be embarrassing since our taxes are paying these corrupt "judges."

We also know, of course, that no attempt has been made to bring Nasir Oric, our Moslem Nazi ally, responsible for the real but censored Srebrenica massacre, to justice. While the article mentions 2 Serbs from Krajina indicted there is no mention of the fact that that community was wiped out in the NATO assisted Krajina Holocaust. To charge them for defending themselves is the precise moral equivalent of charging the Warsaw Jews with resisting the SS & places the members of the "court" & their NATO paymasters in precisely the same moral position.

It will be interesting to see if the Scotsman will be willing to publish my letter putting the not-official view on Monday.

Logie Almond,

Can anyone explain why in the first place it was acceptable for Bosnia, Croatia etc to secede from Yugoslavia but not acceptable for the Bosnian Serbs to secede from Bosnia. Had they been allowed to do so all or at least most of the bloodshed would never have happenrd.
