It's 141 times dearer than tap water – but half can't taste difference

NO MAJOR sporting event goes by without close-up shots of competitors throwing their heads back and quenching their thirst with prominently displayed bottles of water from some remote fiord or spring.
But a survey released today by the watchdog magazine Which? reveals half of consumers cannot taste the difference between bottled and tap water. And 18 per cent of

the 3,039 people who took part in a blind-tasting preferred the flavour of tap
water.

But there are signs that the cost of bottled water is turning buyers off. Consumers in the UK spent £1.68 billion buying 2.275 billion litres of bottled water in 2006. The best-selling mineral water, Evian, will set you back some 31p a litre, while tap water costs an average of 0.22p a litre – 141 times cheaper.

Nearly a quarter of those surveyed by Which? said they were drinking less bottled water than they did a year ago, while separate research in April, by the retail analyst TNS, found sales were down 9 per cent last year.

Neil Fowler, the editor of Which?, said: "There are plenty of good reasons for choosing tap water. You can save money, it's better for the environment and it can taste just as good – if not better.

"The UK has some of the safest and best-quality drinking water in the world. It's time we started appreciating it."

According to Which?, the bottled-water production process wastes an estimated two gallons of water for every gallon purified to put into a bottle.

Some bottled water came from as far away as New Zealand, and most plastic bottles went to landfill, where they can take up to 450 years to decompose.

The consumer group said it supported the installation of free tap water refilling stations in public spaces.

Professor Leigh Sparks, of the Institute of Retail Studies at Stirling University, said: "We are all more aware of green issues and the whole life cycle of bottled water is up for examination."

Owen Davis, of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: "This Which? report really puts paid to the last myth about bottled water – that it tastes better."

But Richard Laming, of the British Soft Drinks Association, said: "More than 75 per cent of bottled water drunk in the UK is sourced from UK producers, and the majority of the rest comes from nearby on the Continent.

"Bottled water comes from fully sustainable sources and accounts for just 0.03 per cent of the nation's carbon footprint."

BACKGROUND

BOTTLED water became a political issue earlier this year when Phil Woolas, the UK environment minister, delivered a stinging attack on the industry, claiming it was bordering on "morally unacceptable" that Britons drank millions of litres of bottled water in lieu of perfectly safe tap water. The attack was sustained by Tim Lang, the government's natural resources commissioner, who said the only way to combat increasing sales was to make bottled water as unfashionable as smoking.

Sales briefly dipped, but have since rebounded.

Bottled Water, with a fancy Label, is only purchased by the ones that want to look,...'HIP'

"Look At ME!, I was at the Gym! Ain't I 'HIP'!", clutching, 'the bottled water'

A kind off status symbol!

Not only are the bottled water drinkers stupid they are an ignorant and irresponsible lot. Just take a walk on Arthur's Seat plastic bottles are the most prevalent litter. My friends who use buses tell me discarded plastic water bottles are frequently found rolling about the floor.

I often ask, "Who the hell needs to drink foreign bottled water in a country where we are famed for our water?"

Ever spotted that Evian is "Naive" spelled backwards? I did ... 25 years ago!

Morning, Chuckles @ #1. And how are you today? Had your meds yet?

Charles, I use a water bottle at the gym but it's filled with tap water...I buy about one water bottle per month and re-use it.

However, I agree completely that the bottles left discarded are a disgrace. Why people can't take their litter with them I have no idea. If they can carry the full bottle up Arthur's Seat, why the hell can't they take the empty one down again, or use the bins, which are provided?

Good Morning,BW.
"Chuckles" stated he was at the Gym this morning, if that's true, he will need a double dose of his meds just to get him moving like the Hip-breed he's trying to emulate!
I hope both you gentlemen will have a good day.
'Chuckles' please don't overdo the exercise, old men shouldn't do too much of it. I'm sure your DYW has told you that already.
Cheers,

Scotland must be short of watter to import plastic boattles of tepid stuff. Eight out of ten Scottish Kats prefer running water.

Charles, I think you've maybe been drinking too much of those harmful chemicals you were talking about......Ain't I hip ? Ain't I a posh snob ?

Apart from bad cockney stereotypes in cheap movies who actually talks like this ?

And btw, using the word 'hip' hasn't been hip for around 40 years now....all things considered I reckon you're in desperate need of a hip replacement

Would Boy Wonder and Charles Linskaill PLEASE stop clogging these forums with their lame banter?

There are certain metal and plastic bottles that can be purchased in Canada and I just refill them with tap water that I have filtered through my Brita filter.

I will NOT pay the exorbitant prices they charge for Evian and Pellegrini -although Pellegrini IS delicious.

Hmmm!!!!,

Am I old fashioned? 24/07/2008 12:09:39
Is it one of a number of new trends nowadays?
1) Teenagers buy alcohol and sit around in parks or wherever.
In my day: We played football virtually every night or met up and had a natter.
2) Loads and loads of litter on the street.
In my day: I have never dropped litter once. Always put it in the bin.
I am 33 by the way.

It's not about educating, it's just stopping downright laziness of people. Can't be bothered holding onto stuff till the bin comes along. I'll drop and pretend it wasn't me.

Hmmm!!!!,

Perhaps the people who are going to be given community service could go around and tidy up the city centre for free. Then we wouldn't need sweepers? Save councils a fortune.

Generally, I'm in violent agreement with most people who have posted. I can't understand the huge sales of the stuff. A few years ago I was entertaining a business client, from South Africa, in Glasgow. Her drink of choice? Scottish water, straight out the tap with the comment that we don't realise how lucky we are to have generally good quality water on tap. At home I use a Brita filter because our local water is a bit 'chemical' tasting unless filtered. That said, I do occasionally buy bottled water. If I'm out and about all day and getting thirsty I'd prefer to hand over money for water on its own than for water loaded with flavourings, colourings and additives.

Why do they call bottled "Mineral Water" "mineral water" when it contains no minerals?
Real Mineral Water is supposed to contain minerals, and taste of them.

I must confess; I do drink bottled water.
I bought a bottle of water six months ago and refill it from the tap.

But, sometimes tap water does contain excessive ammounts of clorine; that we do taste and smell.

I really dislike it when people walk into meetings with their little bottle of branded mineral water and sip it throughout the meeting.

Funny thing is they don't appear any healthier or brighter than the people who get a glass from the tap. Or maybe they think they need a bottle in case someone spikes their drink?

I don't care if bottled water is £100 a litre if I KNOW what's in it - none of these government dopers are going to get me on their drugs .. fluoride, chorine and cyanide to mention but three out of 60 or so 'additives' they put in 'fresh water' ... yours is the future .. don't let them poison it !
