ANTI-WAR protesters struck at four sites across the Capital to mark the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq.
Members of the F*** The War Coalition struck at "strategic" targets in the city in the early hours of this morning in protest at the ongoing military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, they said.

Chancellor Alistair Darling's office on Rutland Square was one of the first places to be targeted in the blitz this morning. Protesters used a stencil to spray-paint slogans on the front door of the constituency office which Mr Darling shares with fellow Labour Party Member Sarah Boyack. Shortly afterwards the group struck at the nearby Army Recruitment Office on Shandwick Place and smashed three windows in the property.

They also targeted the US Consulate in the New Town and the offices of city-based company Selex which makes radar and other equipment for the armed forces.

The group claimed they had carried out the early morning attacks across the Capital.

They said they had carried out previous attacks on properties but never harmed people.

A spokesman for the group said in a statement sent to the Evening News: "We want to bring the war home to those who profit from imperialism.

"We did these actions to draw attention to two recent studies. One that puts the civilian dead as a result of the war in Iraq at a shocking 1.2 million, and a poll which shows that the majority of Iraqis believe that the imperialist forces are doing more harm than good, and that they need to withdraw immediately."

The statement added: "The time is long overdue for more direct measures to prevent this bloody war from continuing."

It also said it had carried out acts of vandalism across Scotland, including attacks on the offices of MPs who voted for the war, and targeting companies involved in the arms trade.

Jane McGirk, spokeswoman for Selex Galileo, said: "We do everything we can to look after the security and well-being of our staff and we are very pleased that none of our employees were injured.

"We condemn acts of vandalism like this"

A police spokesman said inquiries were continuing. And he added: "We would appeal for any witnesses who saw or heard anything suspicious to come forward."

Hardly an 'attack'. This is kids, come on, will we now need identity cards more urgently?

Shouldn't they have gone for five targets, one for each year - no hang on that would require thought.

Like most of the general public I am dead against the illegal occupation of Iraq and imperialism but come on, does this coalition really think that a wee bit of spray paint and a couple of tanned in windaes will suddenly make Gordon Brown bring the troops home? They are obviously the kind of people who eat after 8 mints at 7:30pm. If you really want to be an anarchist - get a job and become the infiltrator from within.

Mindless vandalism - seems two wrongs don't make a right.

How brave! The resistance is certainly at work. I bet they will be creaming themselves to get this "documented" on Indymedia. The wee student tossers.

Cappo Del Monte,

Obviously spineless cretins who wont stand up for their beliefs and go public. Creeping about at night hiding, much like the talliban.

You assume a lot by saying most of the general public, have you hade a vote, or just an assumption on your part, if its based on anti war rallies a few hundred thousand against the population cant be called most

Catch them, ship them out to Iraq and use them as target practice, bloody hippies.
8

S.E,

#6 I guess you are correct, I should rephrase. The general public - who care about the world outside of football, big brother, soap operas and what celebrity was spotted getting out a taxi with no knickers on and also whose reading skills extend beyond the Sun or Heat magazine. Better? At the same time I haven't heard of any "Do attack Iraq" marches have you?
9

Smasher,

I hope it pours with rain or even snows on Saturday for their protest march.

#8 I'm guessing it's something to do with oil. I could be wrong.

True
you dont i am proud to be straight marches either ( being the larger part of the population) it can be looked at both ways
11

Cappo Del Monte,

13/03/2008 12:59:00
We should send them all over to Iraq to help their friends, I have no doubt they would treat them well

S.E,

#11 - Straight people generally don't get persecuted or discriminated against because of their sexuality hence no need for pride marches.

This morning we attacked four targets around Edinburgh on the fifth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq."We did these actions to draw attention to two recent studies. One that puts the civilian dead as a result of the war in Iraq at a shocking 1.2 million, and a poll which shows that the majority of Iraqis believe that the imperialist forces are doing more harm than good, and that they need to withdraw immediately."

The vast majority of which have been killed by the insurgents during their "brave" attacks at such well defended places such as market places.

We live in a democracy where everyone is entitled to an opinion - only problem is, even idiots like that are allowed to have an opinion, but we are duty bound to listen to it (or not, its a democracy, remember).

As for the Anti-war rally, its just a few hundred thousand (maybe) expressing an opinion. And as a democracy, we can listen to it or not.

Personally, I will not be listening. I fully support our ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm not big on political correctness (the mad type) but I do believe that everyone, no matter where they are in the world, should be able live life without fear of having their market place blown up.

So the Iraq war is Five years now. WWII Lasted six years however if you take away the phoney war and take it from Dunkirk to Hiroshima it was Five years to finish a world war and yet it is expected to take up to ten years or longer. Does that mean that we can expect more paint demos.

Well done ! Step it up a bit though, spraypaint and broken windows is fixable, direct attacks on the imperialist scum are not !

I find it quite ironic that these moronic anti-war protestors are going round vandalising leased property around Edinburgh, are in the end paying for the clean up of the buildings that they defaced through their council tax (if they pay it).

What a way to teach yourself a lesson!

Forget about the "attacks" this is the real scandal.

Chancellor Alistair Darling's office on Rutland Square was one of the first places to be targeted in the blitz this morning. Protesters used a stencil to spray-paint slogans on the front door of the constituency office which Mr Darling shares with fellow Labour Party Member Sarah Boyack.

Why does Darling and Boyack need an office in Rutland Square and how much is that costing us every year? I thought MP's & MSP's were supposed to keep their costs down?

#21 - not costing you any more than any other MP or MSP. There are fixed Parliamentary allowances which may not be exceeded.

Scandal my bum. Democracy is not free.

Another example of out of control feral youth. When they catch these monsters they should be publicly thrashed on the Ross bandstand, then made to scrub off their 'art work' with their bare hands - that will sort them out - anyone who refuses to scrub off the vandalism - hang them. The message will soon spread amongst the youth that the ordinary people are fighting back.
26

Question everything!,

Edinburgh 13/03/2008 18:50:32
Criticism of these anti-war protests seems to rely heavily on an assumption of the types of people involved. The idea that only students or the unemployed are capable of anti-war sentiments, seems to suggest that the majority of the population are apithetic or haven't the time to engage in political matters. You 'shouldn't have to be a so-called 'hippy' or on the dole to demonstrate such feelings. Everyone should have an opinion about living in a country which is bombing another. The war in Iraq is unusual in our history because, unlike many world wars, few bombs fall in our backyard. Unless you have, as I do, someone close to you posted out there then the concept of 'being at war' may well feel a distant reality. Every day however, Iraqi civilians and British soldiers are being slaughtered, and our only exposure to these events is through a box in our living room. Graffiti and property damage is seen as immature and childish, while getting on with everyday life as though these attrocities are 'not my problem' is the norm. Perhaps these 'vandals' were challenging us to engage with the violent reality we otherwise have the luxury to ignore.

Have you forgotten already about Saddam Insane, who, for over 30 years, killed thousands of his own people not to mention kurds, iranians, etc....? It has been proven that his regime was involved with Osama bin Laden.

Hello Marie,

RE your #13;

My dear, the Politically Correct/Social Progressive Crowds wouldn't let you do that: straights marching 'in pride' of the heterosexuality would quite obviously be 'bigotry' and 'homophobic'.

A definite no-no.

Cheers from the Rockies
