Hillary Clinton set to be secretary of state in Obama's dream team

Published Date: 22 November 2008
HILLARY Clinton will accept an offer from Barack Obama to become secretary of state, joining her former Democratic rival to help guide US foreign policy, it was reported last night.
Mrs Clinton was said to have come to her decision after talks with the president-elect about the nature of her role as the top US diplomat and his foreign policy plans.

An official in the Clinton camp said: "They are just talking about the state
of the world and what's next."

Her spokesman, Philippe Reines, said that talks were "very much on track", although no formal announcement about the top diplomatic post is expected until after the Thanksgiving holiday next Thursday.

The job will involve playing a major role on the world stage. If appointed, Mrs Clinton would have to step down as senator for New York. She would succeed Condoleezza Rice, who has had the job for the past four years under President Bush.

But such an appointment for Mrs Clinton could prove controversial. During the primary campaign she claimed, falsely, to have endured sniper fire while on a visit to Bosnia. She later conceded she "mis-spoke" about the incident, blaming tiredness for the exaggeration.

And Mr Obama's top foreign policy adviser, Susan Rice, went public to dispute Mrs Clinton's claims to have had a role in the Northern Ireland peace process.

However, many Democrats believe an Obama-Clinton alliance would be a "dream team".

Mrs Clinton has a global profile both as a political leader in her own right and as the wife of a former president.

Policy analysts say her selection as secretary of state could signal a hawkish US stance, noting that she has been more reluctant than Mr Obama to commit to a firm timetable for withdrawing US troops from Iraq.

But many insiders regard her main baggage as being her husband, former president Bill Clinton, some of whose undisclosed business transactions might have the potential to embarrass or compromise his wife in the future.

Transition aides have said that Mr Clinton has "come clean" about his business dealings and that the two camps have worked out financial disclosure issues and the complicated international funding of his foundation, which operates in more than 40 countries.

Mr Obama is also likely to name Federal Reserve chief Timothy Geithner as treasury secretary next week. Officials say he is the leading contender for the job and is likely to be nominated on Monday.

Mr Geithner has played a key role in the government's response to the financial crisis and worked closely with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

The news that Mr Geithner could be appointed to the post sparked a stock market surge yesterday, with the Dow Jones index rising by more than 6 per cent.

Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico is tipped to be commerce secretary. Mr Richardson is a prominent Hispanic leader who endorsed Mr Obama after dropping his own presidential bid this year.

Democratic senator Tom Daschle is expected to take charge of the country's healthcare system.

With all these posts being filled with Clintonites this 1994 all over again.
What happened to the change? Wasn't Obama going to use "outsiders" in Washington? Sweeping it clean?
So much for campaign promises.. yet again

Come on Lynne, it IS change. So that means he kept his promise, right?

Change from Bush to Clinton to Bush to Obama/Clinton.

I see where that looks a little different.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

Once officially announced as President Elect Obama’s choice for Secretary of State and before her Senate confirmation Hillary Clinton will begin to publically reinvent herself. She will clearly demonstrate her readiness and willingness to serve her country as Secretary of State under President Obama and will present her vision and indicate what her approach and her goals will be as head of the State Department. I can only wonder if the new Hillary will sport a new hairdo and wardrobe as well.

#2 SouthernGent,
You both seem to forget that Obama is a fresh face, but the political string pullers have't changed, you know, the puppeteers, showing what a farce the Democratic systems with its voting really is. Your votes mean squat, nothing really happens, after all you have just two parties, in bed together, and you think your vote is going to deliver miracles? What a joke, what a farce. Give me Communism anyday, all of Russia wants to go back to the Communism days, because Communism works and we don't waste our time and money on a vote that amounts to nothing.

Funny though how your communist gov't needed a good dose of capitalism to make their system "work".

Well you may not want to try to steal Communism from us, but the American adninistration sure has a way of shoving so called Democracy down the throats of unwilling people globally, especially the Iraqis and Afghanis, and if they object, they're found in mass graves.
It's a good thing that China is a wee bit too big to be pushed around by your lot, for you'd surely try if you thought you'd have half a chance.
And what's happened to you? Usually you present good points and strong arguments, now you just give it a lack-lustre shot.

PM55 Right.. he is a fresh face...with little or no experience, so he as chosen all these experienced
Clintonites to help him.. like training wheels.
But he has surrounded himself with people who want to run for the Presidency also... namely Clinton and Richardson... so if anything goes "wrong", and things "change" on the ground, where does their loyalty go? Who are they going to be loyal to? Who are they going to take care of first?
He's making a big mistake, by surrounding himself with politicians with designs on his office.
But then again, that's just one person's OPINION.

Back from a semi vacation working trip, all good, may have to go to London for a week soon as well. I may be going to Shanghai sometime later next year on business with stopover in Moscow. I love visiting China and Russia, they're both great countries with so much to see.

Our PM Kevin Rudd upset Bush so we're not exactly the flavour of the month at he moment with the Americans. Bush had asked Rudd in a telephone conversation what the G20 was, and it ended up all over the press.

I highly doubt that you're the 'first' Virginian, and not the first American to tell a lie. The Communist Party itself is there for life, as to its leader, that's a different story, you perform well, you get to stay, if you don't, bye bye. It's just that the public at large doesn't get hoodwinked with false election promises and we don't spend a fortune on elections and don't waste our time voting, you do and see where it got you. Now you show nothing but sour grapes, along with Lynne, Carolyn 1, and a host of others. In short, your vote is a waste of time and money.

Sorry, I can't relate to science fiction movies and shows, can't stand them.
I also don't blindly line up at polling stations hoping that my vote will make a difference, you forget that I lived in Canada most of my life so I'm fully aware of what the vote means, it's just a way to keep you happy whilst pulling the wool over your eyes, I quit believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny at a very young age and it was shortly after that time that I started looking at Communism, it may not be perfect but it far outweighs Democracy and all of its flaws.
And yes I did this by the age of ten.
I'm also not a computer nerd, don't know the first thing about hacking, I only type with two fingers and have to constantly look at the keys whilst typing, does that sound like a computer whiz to you?

Quote:

"Now you show nothing but sour grapes...In short, your vote is a waste of time and money."

Answer:

Robot-55, your problem is that you don't understand the American's view of a political election.

The experience is more like rooting for your favorite college football team...or for the Chinese Olympic gymnastics team if you are Chinese.

Once the contest is over you don't retain any personal animosity toward the winners, but just know that there will be another election in four years when your favorite is apt to win.

The beauty of a democratic republican form of government is that no one gets killed or imprisoned just because they didn't vote for the winner.

It does not cost anything to vote and it only takes about half an hour usually.

The only people wasting money are the candidates, but the winner does get the office...which is why he/she is called the "winner."

Robot-55, you will never convince anyone in a free country that they would be better off in a closed Communist country.

The only peace you enjoy is the peace of the grave. And mass graves are the legacy of Communism, fascism and dictatorships, not of democracies.

And that's the truth!

I know this is hard for a little robot to understand, but just try.

Actually you're wrong again, every time an Iraqi or Afgahni refuses to accept the American version of Democracy, they get found in mass graves, and that's a fact.
And yes your vote does cost you money, getting to the polling station is taking time away from you and many pay for transportation in one form or another, remember, I lived in the west for most of my life, I know. Not everyone lives within walking distance from their polling station, it was a ten minute drive to mine where I lived, so that's a twenty minute round trip, just in case you're a little rusty with math and problem solving.

Postmark-55, if you enjoy living in China then good for you.

Are you aware that the largest underground Christian church is in China?

They are truly our brothers and sisters in Christ and we send our greetings. We send our love and prayers that they will be strengthened by the Holy Spirit to stand fast in their faith until they win their heavenly crown in glory.

Postmark, the reason Chinese Christians have to be "underground" is because they are not free under Communism to do otherwise.

Can you explain how that fact makes Communism so wonderful?

Postmark, have you ever heard the saying:

"Southerners are just like the Chinese because they eat rice and worship their ancestors?"

The explanation is that Virginians often do like to eat rice, but they are also inordinately proud of telling everyone about their famous ancestors.

In fact, North Carolinians often say:

"We are a valley of humility between two mountains of pride."

This means that humble North Carolina is located between the states of Virginia and South Carolina...with the latter two states being proud of their ancestry.

How's that for a little local lore to add to your robot-computer?

Sorry to leave you hanging, I was called in to work for a spell, small emergency but all taken care of, for now.

As a matter of fact, we do allow Christianity here in China, google the Catholic churches in Beijing and you'll see that it is inded not underground but openly allowed. So again, if something is done 'underground' then chances are that they are doing something illegal, and I personally don't follow any faith, but rather my heart and my conscience, far more reliable than following blindly what others tell me to do. Religions are businesses, bottom line. To answer your 'last' question, I was implying that you were lying when you said you were the first Virginian, meaning that you couldn't possibly be the first Virginian, unless you are indeed that old.

I think that our "Virginian" friend is having a crisis of identity, a split, as it were, between his rational mind and his allegiance to a USA that has ceased to exist. Hence the "Virginian" / "First Virginian"
paradox. However, I have yet to detect which personality has anything positive to offer in the current environment; all I read is longing for the
relative simplicity of past glories, real or imagined.
Constitutions and Bibles are of little help with the types of problems we are now facing, new problems of a new world.

I sincerely hope that both "Virginians" will
allow themselves to recognize that our current dilemmas
present us with a unique opportunity for international dialogue,as well as pragmatic solutions to the aftermath of a failed administration. We need to work with each other and recognize the dignity of other
cultures and forms of government. We must resist our tendency to be the world's dictator and bully.
Myopic Americans are in no position to appreciate other cultures and forms of government until they educate themselves by study and/or travel. We cannot
have foreign policy based on ignorance of the world.

Further bitching and moaning don't realy help. . .
we need to "tighten up the act," recognize our failings and move on.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top Republican said on Friday that Democratic U.S. President-elect Barack Obama is "off to a good start" and indicated he was pleased to see President George W. Bush get ready to leave.

"Our members, in one way, are kind of relieved by the departure of an administration that became unpopular and made it very difficult for us to compete," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell told reporters on Capitol Hill.
