Grand designs for city museum hub

AN intricate museum facade depicting life in Edinburgh down the ages could form part of a multi-million-pound revamp of the city's museums and galleries.
The elaborate frontage at the listed Acheson House in the Canongate would form the entrance of a new museum "hub", backed by councillors yesterday.

The series of panels on different stages in Edinburgh's history has been drawn up by leading consultants including Benjamin Tindall architects and the Edinburgh Consultancy.

The frontage would also include moving parts and a clock face, echoing the world famous Astronomical Clock in Prague.

The proposals are one of a series of early concept ideas being considered for the revamp. The plans, which are currently being drawn up by officials, would see the Museum of Childhood sold off to help pay for the new complex in the Canongate, containing the collections from the Museum of Edinburgh, the People's Story and the childhood museum.

The City Art Centre on Market Street would be extended into a new "arts hub" to attract more "blockbuster" exhibitions to the Capital and provide exhibition space for some of the city's independent galleries.

Labour culture spokesman Paul Godzik said: "The old buildings on the Canongate have served us well, but we do have to look at new ways and innovations to make them appeal to visitors.

"However, the scheme is still at an embryonic stage, so there have been no definitive plans. It is far too early to make any comment on what a new museums hub in the city will look like.

"What I am pleased with is that we have agreed to protect the integrity of the collections in our museums and galleries and I will be monitoring this scheme as it progresses."

But Green councillor Alison Johnstone said she did not think the facade would add to the Old Town. She said: "I would probably rather see a historic building than a gimmick.

"It's going to stand out like a sore thumb down there. It's going to have a bit of a Disneyland look about it."

Councillor Mike Bridgman said he was yet to be convinced of the facade's artistic merits.

"I'm not completely sold on it," he said. "It was just an impression we saw – nothing has been set in stone. I think it would be better if the history of Edinburgh was laid out inside the building rather than on the front of it."

The creation of the culture hubs has been backed in principle by councillors, but a business case will have to be drawn up to assess whether the city can afford the scheme before the plans are resubmitted for final approval.

Deidre Brock, the city's culture leader, said: "Our vision for the city's museums and galleries was broadly welcomed at the culture and leisure committee, which is very positive news.

"This helps us as we drive to create a fresh and exciting experience for visitors which tells the story of Edinburgh and celebrates our artists and our collections."

"The frontage would also include moving parts and a clock face, echoing the world famous Astronomical Clock in Prague." Yup, very Embra-like.

What exactly is wrong with the existing museums anyway? Apart from a slight dip in visitor mumbers, I've never heard anyone complain. Huntly House is a fabulous place, all nooks and crannies, and hidden gems.

As it's the cooncil that has let these places become rundown, what difference will a 'facade' make. They'll just let that crumble instead. Hardly anyone knows that Huntly House is there, so maybe a £50 sign advertising it would do the business, so that all the tourists don't walk past, oblivious.

#2 it will not be on the frontage. At present it is just a wall leading to the courtyard of Acheson House.

Acheson House is lying empty and is looking very rundown at the moment.

It would look better if coloured-in like the houses in Balamory.

#2 & 6, I suppose the alternative would be that the cooncil knocked the facade down and opened up the area to the rear for a development of luxury 2 bedroon flats. By removing the facade, the residents would get a nice view of the building opposite.

is it just me or is the word hub, as in "Museum hub" and "Arts Hub", the latest council buzzword?? Will we see it used again and again like "World Class" and "Sustainable"? They might even think about using the expression"Transportation Hub" when describing a bus stop near a tram stop!

Name one time a finished project ever remotely resembled the artists impression? No, I can't either.

I think the artists are the ones who draw court scenes on tv news. ie not very good.

Or more likely exaggerating the aesthetically pleasing. Cynics rool ok.

Benjamin Tindall has the aesthetic tastes of a 7 year old. The refurbishment of the Tolbooth Church on the Royal Mile into 'The Hub' is one of the most garish things I've ever seen.

#5 - exactly my point - we already have 2 museums about Edinburgh, both in the Canongate, right opposite each other - Huntly House and the Peoples Story.

16th century Huntly House has been renamed the Museum of Edinburgh and contains numerous gems like the National Covenant, signed by Scotland's presbyterian leadership in 1638. The Peoples Story is in the 16th century Canongate Tolbooth building. It uses oral history, reminiscence, and written sources to tell the story of the lives, work and leisure of the ordinary people of Edinburgh.

So we're very well off for quality museums. They're just managed by a bunch of numpties.

Why is Benjamin also obsessed with the word "hub"? Buzzwords eh? Next they'll be saying it's a hub for creative industries aiding regeneration and building new opportunities for accessible, inspiring community activities...

No 15, I coulddn't have put it better myself.

You should try sitting in on an Edinburgh Council Staff meeting (I no longer work there by the way) and see how many of these words are actually used. On one occasion, a few of us actually had a game of Bull5417 Bingo during the discussion. If you could just include the words "Synergy and socially inclusive" in your sentence you could be the next chief exec

We vote them in; then they employ the philistines and then, and then they calmly taxi all up and down the city streets- say oooh la la etc.
Alas I sometimes have to watch them from the square and hard by the D Hume atrosity building-

'But Green councillor Alison Johnstone said said: "I would probably rather see a historic building".'
Just how are you going to achieve that, Alison, unless you've got a time machine handy?
