PRIME Minister Gordon Brown arrived in the Glasgow North East by-election constituency today in an attempt to boost the Labour candidate's campaign.

Sarah Brown joins her husband on the campaign trail today

Mr Brown gave his backing to Willie Bain, Labour's candidate for the seat of ex-Speaker Michael Martin – now Lord Martin.

Speaking during a visit to North Glasgow College in Flemington Street in the constituency, he said: "We've got a local candidate in Willie Bain, who lives locally, he knows the local problems.

"People know him, they know they can come to him.

"He's taking up the cause, for example the Glasgow rail link, he wants to see that built to the airport – that would mean lots of jobs in the Glasgow area. Unfortunately the SNP is not going ahead with that.

"We're fighting for jobs in this constituency and throughout the whole of Glasgow."

When asked if he decided to visit because he knew Labour would win this by-election, Mr Brown said: "Willie Bain asked me to come, he's a great candidate. He's been fighting a great local campaign.

"I think it's important to say that I'm very proud of what Willie Bain has been doing."

Asked whether he was worried the BNP would do well in the by-election, the Prime Minister said: "I think that when people see that Labour is determined to be on their side fighting for jobs for young people and fighting for jobs generally in this area.

"When people see that we are doing everything we can to get college and university places, to get apprenticeships and to get job opportunities for people who are without jobs and that we want to see more people in employment in this constituency, they will know that it is the Labour Party that is on the side of hard-working families here."

When asked whether the number of people on benefit in the constituency meant that Labour had failed people in the area, Mr Brown said: "I think there are more jobs in the country and more jobs in Glasgow as a result of all the action we have taken.

"And even with this recession right across the country there are still more than two and a half million extra jobs.

"Now where people are out of work, we want to get them back to work as quickly as possible.

"Where people are on incapacity benefit we want them to get the chance to train to get jobs and where there are young people leaving school we actually want to give them the opportunities."

He said Glasgow City Council had set up a "great apprenticeship scheme".
During the visit to North Glasgow College the Prime Minister spoke to several men working on a bricklaying course and a group of six students at computers as well as staff at the college.

During his visit a banner held by a group of men on Flemington Street opposite the building said "End London Rule".

Last month, the Government formally launched the Glasgow North East by-election to fill the seat vacated in June by Lord Martin.
The writ was moved in the Commons for the contest on November 12 – after a wait of nearly five months.

The four main party candidates are Labour's Willie Bain, 36, a law lecturer; the Liberal Democrats' Eileen Baxendale, 64, a councillor and former social worker; the Tories' Ruth Davidson, 30, a former journalist and the SNP's David Kerr, 36, also a former journalist.

The Scottish Green Party is fielding David Doherty, Tommy Sheridan is standing for Solidarity, John Smeaton is standing as an Independent funded by the Jury Team, and former Big Brother runner-up Mikey Hughes, 35, is standing as an Independent.

Mr Brown was joined by his wife Sarah during his visit today.

Last year she campaigned in Glenrothes and her husband also paid a short visit to the campaign, in a by-election in which Labour went on to hold the seat.

Today, Debbie Stewart, 23, who lives in Balornock in Glasgow and is on a humanities course, was one of the students who met the Prime Minister during his visit to the Glasgow North College.

Asked what it was like to speak to Mr Brown, she said: "It was quite exciting. I'm studying politics for a course so I took a bit of interest in it in the last couple of weeks."

Ms Stewart said she had also met Willie Bain who had called at her house during campaigning last week.

Darren Miller, who is 22 and on a bricklaying course, also spoke to Mr Brown and said: "It was great talking to him."

The way Brown is talking you wouldn't think he was the Prime Minister. All this fighting he is doing for jobs and higher education - it's with himself, he's the boss.

And it does seem rather peculiar to force people on incapacity benefit and single parents back into the workforce (giving employers bonuses to employ them) when that will leave school leavers and people made unemployed through recession at a disadvantage in the job market.

And I don't think GARL would do anything to help Springburn - Labour's own survey returns show that crime is the most pressing issue, and GCC just ruled out a debate on organised crime proposed by the SNP as irrelevant.

I hope Mr Kerr and his team can grasp these salient factors and hammer them home on the doorstep. But to be honest I am not confident. The media have turned this into a personality issue. The political issues are getting lost.

Observer it was not deemed 'irrelevant' as an issue, it deemed irrelevant for the council it was a police matter.

The only thing that is irrelevant in Glasgow North East is the SNP.

If Labour is good for Glasgow North East, why is it a slum after 74 years of Labour wins?

2 That is a matter to be decided by the electorate in GLASGOW North East. We are a democracy.

Your offering,on the other hand, of nothing whatsoever is irrelevant in every constituency!

How anyone with a 'semblance of intellect' can vote LABORE in Glasgow (or anywhere in Scotland), after the way the party has treated the place over the past 50 years or so is a real perplexing question!

I can only imagine that some are so desperate and addicted to their 'giro and benefits', they cant even imagine voting for anyone else, even in spite of the fact that irrespective of who you vote for, with the debt the UK has thanks again to Labore, benefits will be cut and more difficult to get hold of over the next few years, not to forget the service cuts looming as the Tories win again in Middle England and Scotland gets shafted as usual.

Voting SNP would seem a reasonable alternative, as anything else looks likely to be a wasted vote or at best one for stagnation and failure, as has been Labores legacy in Scotland, even in spite of past popularity!

The failure of the Scottish people to realise just how much they have to gain via a break away from this expensive union perplexes me and I imagine must be largely to do with the continual anti Scottish media activity, a real cancer within the nation!

That airport link could have been paid for many, many time over with the debt were all in thanks to Labores financial mismanagement and the resulting UK banking crisis.

Gordon Brown (light touch regulation) and his team are directly responsible for the state of the economy and the lack of management over the past 10 years.

In terms of poverty and deprivation, Glasgow north east must be among the poorest, if not the poorest, constituency in Scotland.

And yet despite this, Labour politicians run around the constituency shouting how awful the SNP are. They have represented this area for 74 years.

The SNP have been in power at Holyrood 30 months.

Gordon Brown campaigns in Glasgow North East....for more cannon fodder for Afghanistan.

Canada is pulling out all troops by 2011. Proportionally, we have suffered higher losses than the Brits and no longer believe this war is winnable. It's also at the wrong time to be chucking money we don't have at it.

Good luck guys, you'll need it as your leader is a mentalist who will stand on your door step in Glasgow NE all nice as pie while sending your neighbour to his death.

20 A most bizarre factor is that in this by-election the BNP will concentrate on asylum seekers - many of whom will be from Afghanistan. The older I get the more surreal the world becomes. Nobody appears to have any common sense and see cause and effect. Oh well.

at Langside College Mr Brown cited the Scottish Secretary as "one person that the college has taught, and one person who has done very well as a result of the education he received here".

I hope that most students have greater aspirations than the academic achievement, or lack of it, than that of spud.

Indeed. Bizarrer still is that people have the ability to make changes but continue down the same path like sheep.

Is it likely that the BNP will make in roads in Glasgow NE?

If you go by the bookies odds the bnp could finish around 12th,likewise quite feasable the Tories could be as low as 10th(more likely a respectable 7th or 8th lol) .Odds on SNP win getting shorter around 6/5 down from around 2/1 a few days ago, could just mean bookies are having a few wagers on an upset, but sure Gordon must be just a litte worried.

24 There are thickies in Glasgow North East as there are everywhere else. But personally I don't see why we should cater to them. We should discuss immigration as a sensible issue which is not race based. If they get a few votes well hell - I think we all know a few people are thick. But they shouldn't dominate the agenda. Immigration is a political and economic issue it is not about race, and we should ignore the BNP and their thickie followers, and grown ups can sort it out.

Brown is in Springburn to boost the Labour candidate, what a joke!

# 13 Thomas 79 has it right.

Glasgow North East is a poverty stricken slum full of depressing welfare beggars who will vote Labour till the day they die.

The minister’s son from Edinburgh will have difficulty understanding their accent, as they will have difficulty understanding his. Their fumbled attempt to speak the English language has been a source of amusement for a hundred years.

His presence will make no difference whatsoever to the outcome.

I wonder if he’ll ride around in a Rolls Royce as the disgraced Mick did waving to his subjects like royalty.

# 20 Sounds like a Labour Springburn man, thick and uninformed!

Canada is in Afghanistan to help Afghans rebuild their country, together with over 60 other nations and international organizations, at the request of the Afghan government and as part of a UN-mandated, NATO-led mission.

The five-year mandate signed in 2006 and endorsed by the International community and the Government of Afghanistan expires in 2011 hence the planned departure among others of Canadian forces.

To suggest that Canada is leaving because the war cannot be won is an insult to the brave men and women who serve in the Canadian military.

political betting.com call a Labour victory

Would he have visited today if there was any doubt?
One of my biggest betting errors of 2008 was to change my initial view of the Glenrothes by-election. My first thought was that Gordon Brown and Sarah would not have joined the campaign if those running the Labour operation had not advised that victory was in the bag.

Straightforward thinking and I bet accordingly. Then, just three days before the vote, I got a call from a Scottish political contact who told me of the massive SNP effort that had been made in the final weekend. I switched my position and we all know what happened.

So today’s news that Gordon has felt confident enough to visit Glasgow NE is very telling. A massive effort has gone into voter registration and getting postal votes and Labour, surely, are going to win.

On top of that Labour has become adept at blaming the SNP-led Scottish government for lots of problems in the area which adds a real potency to their message.

So that’s where my money has gone today and I’ve vowed to remain firm next week.

The real problem in Glasgow North East is not unemployment; it is health. There are other constitiuencies in the Glasgow area which do not have either the same levels of unemployment or ill-health. What makes so many residents of GNE particularly unsuited for work. Only by tackling the health issues, will the other matters improve. I dont want to seem patronising, and I apologise if I am, but until excessive drinking, smoking and poor diet is tackled, there will be no improvement in health. There is no simple easy solution to the problem. This needs to be geared to the younger generation, with incentives for breaking the cycle of despondency and dependency which has blighted so many families.

Think about it:
Gordon Brown's hero, 'conviction politician' and honoured guest for tea at No.10, Springburn's friend, Maggie Thatcher wanted us all to buy our council houses and BT shares because she imagined that would turn us all into true blue tory voting capitalists.

What do you reckon the mindset has been on the Labour high-heedyins' side of the equation for the last 74 years, given what you see in Glasgow and North Lanarkshire today?

"If Labour is good for Glasgow North East, why is it a slum after 74 years of Labour wins?"

Excellent point #3 Stephen.

I always think Labour has fantastic front when they walk about the constituency talking earnestly about what they intend to help reduce poverty and unemployment as if they have only just come across this constituency instead of running it for 74 years.
