"Three weeks ago the SNP predicted a political earthquake. This SNP victory is not just a political earthquake, it is off the Richter scale.
"It is an epic win, and the tremors are being felt all the way to Downing Street."

Newly-elected Glasgow East MP John Mason

"If you want me to say it is a bad result, it is a bad result. I don't think it is a night to say it is about o
ne particular individual.

"I would ask them to reflect on the time when I joined the Labour Party which was 1982, not in the heady heights of New Labour's success, but at a time of repeated and bitter defeats for the Labour Party.

"We learnt a very serious lesson at that point, which is that divided parties lose."

International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander

"Clearly, this has been a bad night for us and we will take it seriously."

Defence Secretary and Scottish Secretary Des Browne

"If we win this seat, it's an earthquake. It's a beautiful day. I think there is a feel-good factor, and this is the opportunity to send a message to Gordon Brown."

John Mason, casting his vote

"Support has been good so far. When you look at the figure at some by-elections, this is quite promising." A Lib Dem activist who claimed 29 per cent of voters had hit the polling stations by late afternoon.

"The news coming from the count is fairly encouraging, It's still going to be incredibly close. I'm feeling ... optimistic."

Nicola Surgeon, deputy leader of the SNP, late last night

"As I promised at the beginning, I am working right up to 10pm, taking nothing for granted and working for every vote. I think Labour has had a very positive message for the voters and I have had a very positive response to the message."

Labour's Margaret Curran, campaigning at Asda in Parkhead

"The ground is shaking and shuddering. I think the earthquake is coming and it will arrive on time and on schedule."

Alex Salmond earlier in the day

"Alex Salmond is the Marmite of Scottish politics. There are people who genuinely love him but there are huge numbers of people who simply can't abide the sight of the man."

David Cairns, the Scotland Office minister overseeing Labour's campaign.

"I think the Prime Minister should have his holiday but then I think we need an election."

Conservative Party leader David Cameron

John Curtice, professor of politics at Strathclyde University in Glasgow.

"In tonight's vote, there was a 22.54 percent swing toward the SNP, according to BBC News 24 television. A shift of this size replicated across Scotland would reduce the number of Labour lawmakers in Scotland to one"

Whereas Gordon Brown is despised by everyone - especially the rest of the labour party

Not the least of the many satisfactions of a wonderful night for Scotland was to see the creepy David Cairns sweat and lose his intolerable self-satisfied gloss.

The star of the night on TV, apart from the candidate, was Nicola Sturgeon, with her calm, contained dignity, exemplifying the best of Scotland.

But of the remaining Alexander sibling - what can we say? He made the best of a very, very bad job, but his unfair and inaccaurate attack on Nicola Sturgeon was nasty, and can only be excused by his understandable desperation to defend his sister.

Labour should go and hide with their notorious 'alleged' leader - wherever he might be, probably packing I should think if only to ease the strain later!

Go! Go! Go! - that's the message and really get lost -even moreso than you are currently!!!!!

I see this article carries a quote from David Cairns - anyone got the remotest idea what he looks like or does as a Scotland Office Minister?

The Invisible Minister fighting Scotland's corner in Westminster? Not needed, thank you!

Is this wee Dougie (another shifty eyed brown-noser) admitting the Lie-bore perty are divided?

We all know now and Broon knew then that he would have lost the "coronation".......sorry, election he wanted to have just after Lie-bore elected sheep voted him in without any thought as to what would be right and correct...other than for themsleves obviously

Done a nosey and seen what Mr Cairns does for Scotland - here is his June diary from his own his website:

This month I met with Gallagher’s to discuss the Port Glasgow retail development, visited both Sacred Heart Primary School and St Columba’s in Kilmacolm and went along to the presentation of prizes at St Andrew’s Boys’ Club. I also attended a charity golf event at the Port Glasgow Golf Club, dropped into the Volunteer Centre and went to the Notre Dame production of Oliver. Other meeting this month included ones with River Clyde Homes, the Big Lottery and HM Revenue and Customs. Several people from the constituency came down to see round the House of Commons and I also accompanied a local businessman to a reception for entrepreneurs in Downing Street.

We'll be sorry to see him go!

Thanks for this information.

Cairns sounds like his function is either as a tourist or a tour guide...what a waste of space!!!

Nice to see that scottish labour, scopurge of scotlands shame - sectarianism- supported the westminister government scottish office minister in attending functions at 4 RC venues with no corresponding attendance at non denominational schools.
An excellent example of their headline grabbing, spin orientated policy making, lets face it sectarianism cannot possibly be the result of state sponsored segregation from aged 5years but is most surely to do with football!
WIth views like this, a refusal to accept the tough challenges and the constant lies and sleaze (Curran -"I have lived and worked in the east end all my life" - apart from the 15years working in Jordanhill or 18 Years living in Langsides love, McConnel and his brother in law buying land for development in edinburgh for £5!!!!!!!!!!) No surprise that the people who have suffered and given them 50 years of support now think that on the evidence of 1 year in power in a devolved minority government the SNP ARE a credible alternative. Be prepared in the next few days for the usual 'protest' vote nonsense from Labour, if this were romania in the late 80's, Brown would be ceacesceau.

Well, "David Parochial McChattering Cairns", I think you will find there are a hefty amount of Scots out there who totally despise your very Labour and Union loving existence!!
