Published Date: 08 March 2008
TWENTY-FOUR hours ago, Samantha Power was the Pulitzer Prize winner who was an unpaid but highly regarded foreign policy adviser to the Barack Obama campaign.
But by yesterday afternoon, Ms Power, once tipped as a high commissioner on war crimes, was dropped from the campaign – a casualty of the fast-moving modern media world.

The Scotsman published an interview with the Harvard professor and, within
hours, her remarks had been read around the world, after they were lifted from the newspaper's website.

The story spread across the globe, and despite an initial apology from Ms Power, Hillary Clinton's supporters in Congress called for her to be fired.

The speed with which it hit the news networks and websites – rapidly making the headlines in the United States – underlines the viral nature of modern technology and how toxic the campaign had become.

Adrian Monck, professor of journalism at City University, London, said: "Basically, ten to 20 years ago politicians had time to sit around the table with their advisers and come up with a communications strategy.

"But now that information can be sent round the world within seconds it is almost impossible to have such a strategy and the whole political team needs to be much more careful.

"What it means is that politicians, rather than their advisers, have to be a lot more careful who they have around them as the advisers themselves are capable of creating a mini-crisis."

The spread of the story is in contrast to the news blackout on Prince Harry's deployment to Afghanistan – a deployment that only came to light after foreign websites leaked the information.

Obam-o-licious!,

Washington DC 08/03/2008 00:58:28
I wonder if someone who had decided to vote for Obama will change their mind in light of a comment that was said off the record by an unpaid advisor.

Seriously though... Hillary has been called much worse... by me no less!

And after one interview with the Scotsman, it ruins your career.

HINT: Don't talk to the Scotsman.

Gerri.... watched you on Tucker Carlso...
YOu were rightly appalled by his pathetic take on journalistic standards in the US....
The US media is SH*T... their lack of balls is why we ended up in Iraq...

And incase you missed tucker callson beign taken to the cleaners about his 'journalistic standards" by Jon steward... (the comedian americans now have to rely on for an objective view of the news) here is a link

ENJOY !!!!!!!

And thanks for the reporting.... i think you were well within your journalistic rights to print what Power said... Ms.Power is a pulitzer prize winning journalist.... you would think she would know better .... however given she is an american journalist.... sigh....

She is not a journalist - she is a Harvard Professor, and therefore has no grasp on reality, anyway.

It's not fear of litigation!!! It has simply become a product to sell... period. There's no news, no journalism, in American main stream media; simply market driven product. You have to take care of your sponsors after all... they pay the bills.

And with regard to Prince Harry, I note that none of the sites reporting, including ultimately Drudge, knew of the embargo. The American newspapers which knew of the embargo honored it.

FIRST - Its my pleasure to read Samantha Power's Pulitzer Prize winner book; Samantha had accomplished her own task for which she was physicaly present in the UK to begin with. The bombardment of UN headquarter in Baghdad soon after changing the Iraqi regim is a curious subject for sure! Why it happened; and to who's benfit?
Second – 3 years "unpaid" advisor serving Obama, cannot continue forever – Its not a charity! Though Obama; later on; accumulated a surplus of fund for his campaign! I don't blame her she resorted to her own resources, her own Pulitzer Prize winner book! She a great independent thinker!
Third – She has to be ostracized from the political scene and preferably from the journalistic arena too before she gets bigger:
A. On the Democratic party side:
- In the midst of the recent Gaza siege events Obama thought that Israel's security is sanctimonious yet failed to mention a thing about the dehumanized people on the other side! A WAR CRIME EXPERT MIGHT advise different view on this!
- Mrs Clinton who boasted herself as being "experienced" and ready as a commander in chief - Had missed a great experience as the war started in the Balkan. She similtaniously started a vacation with her daughter in the midlle of no-where; in the Moroccan part of the Sahara desert, which is seeking indepence!
And where is the experience in kissing the cheeks of Yaser Arafat's wife and chatting with her in Gaza and not mentioning a thing about the life of ENTIRE NATION under PERPETUAL SIEGE! Despite the daily reminders of news events! A WAR CRIME EXPERT MIGHT advise a different view on this too!
B. On the Republican party side:
A WAR CRIME EXPERT MIGHT might not remain scilent when discovering that McCain's father "One Navy Admirl" was involved in a coverup related to USS Liberty which has its own DOTorg site!

Gerri, you're a tabloid hack, and the Scotsman is worse off for your deciding that "not on the record" doesn't actually mean "not on the record". That the Editor backs you up saves your job: but I think you'll be worse off for your decision.

"What it means is that politicians, rather than their advisers, have to be a lot more careful who they have around them as the advisers themselves are capable of creating a mini-crisis."

It also means that journalists and news editors have to be much more careful of their stories and the standards of what they report.

The standards of professionalism and journalistic standards of the Scotsman (and sadly the Scottish media, in general) are now being discussed around the world.

If being the First Lady for 8 years is what it takes to be President - Pickles and Nancy Reagan are similarly qualified and as for Samantha Powers, she simply said what a lot of us, even on the Democratic side, are thinking.

Wait. Harry's back because of Drudge? Harry's back because the press, two weeks ago, told us that the Taliban is coming out of its snowbound hibernation and will open its spring offensive soon. Winter was a lovely time for Harry to oversee the hibernating
Taliban. Now they are going to put his brother on a ship to replace him on the front. Has the Taliban ever sunk a Britship?

It's no coincidence that 'viral' also connotes the transmission of disease; the levels of toxicity on this subject -here and in the related thread that the Scotsman killed earlier this morning- are repellent, and utterly unilluminating.

One looks for a backlash against this sort of collieshangie in civilised political discourse, maybe even between now & november, but it seems impossible.

Wow, Scotsman, you let Peev write about her own story, that's objective reporting! Thanks for baring your absolute lack of journalistic integrity. You closed the comments to another article claiming the comments didn't meet your standards. Too bad you set the bar so high for your "readers" and so low for your "reporters." But now we know the truth in spite of your puppet Peev.

Calling Powers a politician is a stretch is it not? What was her elected office? Wasn't she just another writer, like Peev, only with international proclaim instead of condemnation and disrepute like Peev?
Scotsman & Peev got the horse squarely up the cart on this whole issue, and their willful blindness makes their inexplicable ignorance look worse than merely provincial-- they are not only deaf but stupid.

San Francisco Rose,

Sorry, I forgot that since you're the "press" I'm supposed to have your conventions memorized. Bad on me. Just like when the USA invaded Iraq because they were supposed to know that the dictator the US installed years earlier was no longer good for them. How can everyone else be so stupid, asked Peev.
Unfortunately for us, Scotsman is the answer.

Here's what Hillary Clinton does:

She approves her team darkening a photograph for dissemination to voters of Obama's face.

She approves and participates in a fear-based political commercial for television of a red phone ringing in the Whitehouse and asks, "Who is best to answer it?" McCain need only remove her face from the commercial, substitute his own, and answer, "Me." Election won.

Monster? Who knows. Bitter? Most likely. Able to handle the world's statesmen and leaders? Possibly not. Can she handle her own husband? Ready to install moral, ethical, and structural change to USA politics? Most definately not.

Dear Ms Peev,

I understand your "rationale" for releasing the story. I understand that it was, technically, within the bounds of your code of journalistic "ethics".

I dare say, it would also have been within the bounds of that same code to have exercised some discretion and common human decency.

You've admitted that you knew she was "jet lagged"; you've admitted that the topic of the interview was to have been her book, you've admitted that she had just received an upsetting phone call, and you've admitted that she immediately requested the offending remark be "off the record"......yet you continue to justify your action and let yourself "off the hook" on the technicality that you didn't break any rules.

I have news for you. No one is going to buy more copies of your publication (though your online traffic will spike) as a result of this and very few people are going to think more of you for having acted in such a selfish and inconsiderate/destructive manner.

It would have cost you next to NOTHING to have done the decent thing and to have respected Ms Power's request for privacy in re her off the cuff slip.

As you know, Samantha Power has been an ardent and substantial voice for human rights.

She may have even become and Undersecretary of State for human rights in an Obama administration.

It breaks my heart to contemplate the possibility that, in the future, people will be dead and tortured who may not otherwise have been, indirectly because you've abetted the besmirching of this good woman's reputation.....and for what?

So you could get some publicity and advance your career? Was your "15 minutes of fame" worth the price others may bear?

I pray that Obama wins the nomination and the presidency and that he goes ahead and appoints Samantha Power to a high position in his administration so that she may be able to more effectively implement some of the great ideas and values she writes about and teaches her students.

And

(This is a continuation of the prior post which the software truncated)

And Ms Peev, I pray that you too should be moved to think about the full spectrum of potential consequences before you pull any more journalistic "triggers" in the future.

I pray that, at some point, you will be blessed with the capacity to feel ashamed of your action in this matter.

Please forgive me my righteous tone; God knows I've made my own share of blunders.

May the Good Lord have mercy on all of us; we sure are a stinky lot of stupid creatures.

#31 and 32 Nick

I totally agree with you on this. I sincerely hope that Samantha Power is re-instated once this has blown over. On the subject of Ms Peev I think you can take comfort that she will be the loser in the long term. Loss of respect and integrity is usually fatal to a journalist's career. I have not spoken to anyone who think her actions were honorable.

stonehaven 09/03/2008 11:09:16
Oh by the way this is meant for Gerri Peev. Gerri, I hope you are ashamed of yourself now it is dawning on you how little support you have. For me you have committed a cardinal sin in journalism and no-one will ever trust you again as an interviewer or journalist. I know that the vast majority of your media colleagues do not support you on this and they resent being tarnished by your lack of ethics.
