RESIDENTS are celebrating victory after city councillors threw out plans to allow a controversial travelling funfair to set up in Portobello.
Almost 140 people formally objected to the return of the fair, which locals say brought "gang warfare" to the streets last year.

And, against a recommendation by council officials, members of the council's regulatory committee voted unanimously against the application.

Fair operators M&D said today they were "surprised" at the decision after receiving a good response from families who attended last year.

But Portobello residents had set up a petition against the return of the fair. They felt it brought two weeks of "sheer hell" to the former ScottishPower site on Fishwives Causeway last Easter.

Some locals claimed to have witnessed fights involving up to 100 youths, and the fair also attracted scores of noise complaints.

Three residents from Baileyfield Road, whose back gardens overlook the site, appealed to councillors to reject the application after being allowed to speak at the committee meeting.

Portobello and Craigmillar councillor Maureen Child also spoke out on behalf of the many residents who complained to her about the fair.

She said she was delighted that her colleagues had listened to the "strength of feeling".

"I think the committee took one look at it and decided against it," she said. "The residents spoke very eloquently about the effect this had on them last year, which was just sheer hell for two weeks.

"Nobody would like that on their doorstep, no matter how much fun it might be for others. It was just the wrong thing to have in that location so this is a very positive results for Portobello."

Peter Beaton was just one of the 136 residents who wrote to the council to register his objection to the application. He said: "I believe that things of this nature should be looked at properly, not like last year when we only found out about it at the last minute.

"The committee didn't take a great deal of convincing, actually, once they heard about all the things that happened last year."

Nick Stroud, secretary of Portobello Community Council, was disappointed the fair would not be coming to town, but said it was the right decision to make following the reported violence last year.

He added: "I don't think the council really had any choice because what they were rejecting was the intolerable behaviour that it attracts."

A spokeswoman for M&D's Theme Park said: "We are clearly very disappointed that the application for the funfair at Portobello has been rejected for this year.

"We received excellent feedback from the many families that attended and also from surrounding businesses for last year's fair, so this decision has come as a surprise."

A council spokesman added: "This was a unanimous decision by the committee. As well as the view that this proposal was too big for that particular location, there was significant local concern from residents and their elected representatives."

Having a permanent fixture beside the coast is a good idea. Codonas in Aberdeen is just beside the beach and hosts corporate events.

As a local, born and bread, I can see the two sides.... Yes it does bring groups of youths from other area's, which is a shame that they have to spoil it all for others!! I went there last year with my 4 children, we all had loads of fun. Yet, for years, there was Fun City (i think it was called)down the beach on the prom, out of they way of peoples back garden's etc , all the rides, but bit by bit it went smaller and smaller.... now seemingly houses are going to be built on the site.... wow, there's a surprise eh!! not!! Yes there should be something in the local community for all as a family to enjoy, but it's all fading to a hazy memory :(

Quote: "We received excellent feedback from the many families that attended...". M&Ds seem to be missing the point, it is not the fun for those who attended that was the problem, but the misbehaviour on the periphery by mindless morons. As another poster has pointed out, Cordonas on the seafront at Aberdeen operates successfully because it is not immediately surrounded by residential housing. M&Ds operate successfully at Strathclyde Country Park without too much upset for the local residents. The venue at Portobello was just too close to local residents.

Mind you, it would have been quite handy to visit while we all get stuck in the traffic queue for 16+weeks when they change the roundabout to traffic lights. The gang warfare could give the bored drivers in the queue some entertainment.............

I'm Totally Gutted That The Fair Isn't Coming This Year, I Really Enjoyed Myself Along With My Mates. I Just Hate It When People Spoil It For Others. I Wouldn't Say They Should Take It Away Completely Surely They Could Find Another Solution!

#19 ... I totally agree, it's a shame for the law abiding people, who only want to get on with their lives and have fun! Do the shows still go to Hay Drive? I mind them being there, on the grounds next to the Jack Kane Centre? Is it M & D's that go to the Meadows? My kids are gutted when I had to tell them this afternoon, that the fair isn't allowed..... We seen the big wheel from our window, and heard the music, it's just a shame that a handful of idiots who don't know how to behave, have spoilt it for everyone else.... Shame on any kids they have, going by their behaviour!!!

Shaz,

#20... C'mon.... yeah, I know the beach is there.... but what is left down there? yeah, sand and water, but there was lots more when I was growing up, and it's just a pity it's slowly disapearing. And now adays you can't take your eyes off your kids for a sec... you don't know what perv is down there!! The little girl, who am sure you'll all know who am meaning, that got taken away from Porty Beach in the 1980's, was a friend I played with in the playground at school.... maybe am a little OTT with my kids, but growing up knowing that has made me more aware of what could happen.... So thats why I have said about something in the community for families ie, the fair... was good, (even the fun fair that was down the prom for years, but faded away) apart from some idiots spoiling it for us all!
