GORDON Brown's premiership was in its death throes last night after another wave of ministerial resignations and a devastating personal attack by one of his former colleagues.
The Prime Minister's attempts to shore up his authority with a Cabinet reshuffle were punctuated with a series of high-profile resignations throughout the day. In all, 11 ministers – five of them women – have resigned in the past four days.

But the most damaging assault came in an explosive resignation letter from Europe minister Caroline Flint, who accused Mr Brown of running a "two-tier" government and of treating women in his Cabinet as "female window dressing".

She added: "I am a natural party loyalist. Yet you have strained every sinew of that loyalty."

Her statement undermined Mr Brown's attempt to restore his credibility in the face of a growing party revolt and one of the worst sets of local election results in Labour's history.

'Just female window dressing' - Full text of Caroline Flint's resignation letter

At a news conference, a defiant but nervous-looking Mr Brown accepted responsibility for the turmoil within the party and the country but insisted he would not walk out.

"If I didn't think I was the right person leading the right team … I would not be standing here," he said. "I will not waver. I will not walk away. I will get on with the job." But Labour rebels remain unconvinced and it is expected some of them will confront Mr Brown on Monday as the results of the European elections are laid bare.

Mr Brown hopes to appease the doubters with a string of initiatives on constitutional reform next week. But a trip to Normandy today – ironically for the D-Day commemorations – could provide cover for his party to plot against him.

Analysis: Unlikely bedfellows unite in bid to oust Brown and save their own skins

In a move that would mimic the start of Margaret Thatcher's downfall while she was in Paris, Mr Brown could find junior ministers and rebels colluding while he is abroad.

Stephen Byers, a former Cabinet minister, warned the European election results could trigger a further revolt.

A poor turnout has sparked fears that Labour could be pummelled into fourth place, behind the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and Ukip.

Mr Byers said: "I think on Monday, Labour MPs will be considering a very important question – is Gordon Brown a winner or is Gordon Brown a loser? Let's see how the results are going to come out."

Another sign of insurrection came when Scots-born MP Ian Gibson revealed yesterday that he was to stand down from parliament to trigger a by-election.

The Norwich North MP has been banned from standing for Labour over his expenses, but friends claimed he was being punished for being an outspoken critic of the government.

After yesterday's reshuffle, Mr Brown's Cabinet was left with only seven women, just four of whom are of full Cabinet ministerial rank.

Cabinet reshuffle: New Cabinet listed in full

In her parting shot, Ms Flint referred to the role of women at Westminster and wrote to Mr Brown that:

"I am extremely disappointed at your failure to have an inclusive government.

"You have a two-tier government. Your inner circle and then the remainder of Cabinet.

"I have the greatest respect for the women who have served as full members of Cabinet and for those who attend as and when required. However, few are allowed into your inner circle.

"Several of the women attending Cabinet – myself included – have been treated by you as little more than female window dressing. I am not willing to attend Cabinet in a peripheral capacity any longer."

She went on: "Time and time again I have stepped before the cameras to sincerely defend your reputation in the interests of the Labour Party and the government as a whole. I am a natural party loyalist. Yet you have strained every sinew of that loyalty."

Ms Flint added: "It has been apparent for some time that you do not see me playing a more influential role in the government. Therefore, I have respectfully declined your offer to continue in the government."

Her attack came as Mr Brown's efforts to embark on a dramatic reshuffle were thwarted by the refusal of Chancellor Alistair Darling and Foreign Secretary David Miliband to budge from their posts. The only minister he was able to sack was Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy, who insiders said was "too nice to complain".

Left scrambling to plug the gaps in his government, Mr Brown turned to former Welsh secretary Peter Hain to take up his old post and Labour MEP Glenys Kinnock to become Europe minister.

The Prime minister also made tycoon and TV star Sir Alan Sugar a peer, to take the role of enterprise tsar.

The changes did not go down well with many. One Scots MP spoken to by The Scotsman said: "It is the endgame for Brown. The fact he has to rely on retreads, unelected lords and one celebrity will hardly inspire confidence in his government."

Another source described his fury at "gutless" ministers who rallied behind Mr Brown, saying: "No wonder the public hates all politicians. I despise them, too.

"There are people around that Cabinet table who hate Gordon yet expect the back-benchers to do the dirty work for them."

The MP added that, unless there were signs of a confrontation involving the "big beasts" such as Mr Straw or Mr Miliband, few MPs would want to sign a rebel letter urging Mr Brown to go.

The source said: "Why should it just be the troops who have their heads shot off while the officer class stays safe?"

Government sources warned, however, that Labour rebels would have to brace themselves for a general election if Mr Brown was ousted.

Buoyed by the chaos surrounding the government, Tory leader David Cameron renewed his call for an immediate general election.

"At a time when our economy is in such difficulty and our politics are so mired in scandal, what we need is a strong government, and yet what we see today is a government that is so weak, it's hard to believe," he said. "The Prime Minister isn't reshuffling his Cabinet – they are reshuffling themselves."

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg claimed the government was finished. "Whether Gordon Brown stays, whether Gordon Brown goes, whether someone replaces him, it is irrelevant, because the Labour government is finished," he said.

"The Labour Party has no right, when people are crying out for help, to hold the country hostage with its own splits and infighting."

The latest opinion polls will give disgruntled Labour MPs more cause for concern.

The party is now neck and neck with the Liberal Democrats on 18 per cent, after falling 22 points behind the Tories with less than a year to go before a general election has to be held.

The Conservatives were down one point from last month on 40 per cent, with Labour down ten points, according to the survey for Ipsos Mori. A poll conducted by Scotsman.com, also yesterday, found 82 per cent of respondents felt Mr Brown should not continue as Prime Minister.

The possibility of the government collapsing has led to uncertainty in the currency markets all week, and the latest day of high political drama took its toll on sterling, which plunged to a two-week low against the euro, before recovering some ground.

Bookmakers have already had their say on how it's all going to play out. Paddy Power has begun to pay out on Mr Brown leaving office by the end of August.

A WEEK OF WOE

Monday: Doubt surrounded the future of Chancellor Alistair Darling after Gordon Brown said he had made a "mistake" over his expenses. The Prime Minister was forced to fend off a flurry of questions over the Chancellor's position after Mr Darling admitted he would be paying back hundreds of pounds and apologised "unreservedly".

Tuesday:News of Home Secretary Jacqui Smith's looming resignation leaks out. Within a few hours, former Cabinet minister Patricia Hewitt announces she will stand down from parliament as does children's minister Beverley Hughes and Cabinet Office minister Tom Watson. He is one of Mr Brown's staunchest allies and his departure remains a mystery. Expenses-scandal-hit back-bencher David Chaytor also reveals he will not stand again. Late that night, the party rushes out a statement confirming it is banning a clutch of MPs, including Mr Chaytor, Elliot Morley and Margaret Moran, from standing for Labour again. But a backlash brews when Scots-born Norwich North MP Ian Gibson is included in the list. Supporters insist his expenses situation was not comparable with the others and that he was being vilified for being an independently-minded MP.

Wednesday:Communities Secretary Hazel Blears – wearing a brooch with the slogan "rocking the boat" – quits the Cabinet on the eve of European and local elections.

Conservative leader David Cameron said the fourth ministerial resignation in two days showed Mr Brown had lost command of a government that was "collapsing before our eyes", while Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg told MPs: "Labour is finished." In the so-called Hotmail Plot it emerges that an e-mail has been circulated by party rebels calling for Mr Brown to quit, and that there were 50 MPs willing to put their name to it.

Thursday: After an uneasy polling-day truce, Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell breaks cover at 10pm. In a letter, he calls on Mr Brown to step down, stating his continued leadership makes a Tory victory more likely. Back-bench loyalists take to the airwaves to support Mr Brown, as do Cabinet ministers.

Friday: By mid-morning, one of those ministers has changed his mind. Defence Secretary John Hutton reveals he is quitting his post and standing down at the next general election. A hasty Cabinet reshuffle ensues. By the end of the afternoon, Geoff Hoon, Margaret Beckett and Europe minister Caroline Flint, who had only 24 hours ago pledged loyalty, had all resigned. In announcing her resignation, Ms Flint accused the Prime Minister of using women as "female window-dressing" in his government.

But I very much doubt the SNP will ever take Scotland, they have already lost over half the voters that would of voted for them.
If it had not been for their smoking and drinking policies, the SNP may have had a good chance.

Brown is the most two faced, deciptful and maniacal politician i have witnessed in my lifetime.

He has spent his whole life in order to achieve one aim...that of PM only to find out that his colleagues, the public, the press and his 'British' establishement have always despised him!

The addendum is that to gain power he has denied even his own roots to appeal to middle England and as a consequence even his own countrymen despise him.

Brown ha learnt the hard way what Britishness means to a Jock and it could not have happened to a more duplicitous Scottish Unionist!

Gets worse!!!!

From The Telegraph,

"Mr Brown, who "flipped" the designation of his second home before moving into Downing Street, submitted an estimated electricity bill for his home in Fife which partly covered a period when his London flat was his designated second home.

He also claimed for council tax and service charge bills for his London flat which included periods when his second home was in Scotland.

In total, Mr Brown appeared to make claims totalling £512 for the "wrong" properties.

Mr Brown – who claimed more than £28,000 in second home allowances after moving into a grace and favour apartment in Downing Street in 2006 – has agreed to repay some money after he referred the matter to the parliamentary fees office. He has admitted making three separate mistakes on his expenses.

It is a humiliating blow for the Prime Minister, who publicly rebuked Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, this week for doing a similar thing."

WILL HE SACK HIMSELF????

Or will he just get on with the job????

Utter clown

It just proves what a bunch of backstabbing troglodytes the Labour party are when GB Brown is made a scapegoat just as nearly ALL of them are shown to be on the make and on the take.

The WHOLE Labour party are a bunch of grasping, self-serving non entities who are more of a hindrance to the public than an asset. It's all been such a wasted opportunity to improve the things Labour claimed to be about, only for them to be found out as a bunch of lying, thieving, warmongering puppets who were bought off by the help yourself trough as their masters made their moves to control more and more in an orgy of corrupt power moves at the expense of many people who they abused instead of representing.

It is not just GB who was the problem here, that's for sure.

Well since I don't bother with pubs apart from to watch the odd game of football and I chucked smoking since cannabis became highly contaminated I am not bothered with the ban, but if top notch Skunk had been available in pubs and they suddenly stopped that then I could maybe see that making a big difference, but the crazy thing is that skunk is illegal and the much more dangerous tobacco is available all over the place, and although banned in pubs, the smokers do a mass exodus at half-time for a fag outside the door. I am glad I chucked smoking tobacco.

Alex Salmond should do us all a favour and sort out this anomaly, and if Broon had done so instead of pandering to the boorish hypocrites he would not find himself in this predicament now, surrounded by a bunch of killjoy, warmongering bampots.

Brown is trying to pander to the apolitical airhead types who thrive on "reality" TV, by inquiring after Susan Boyle's health, setting up his wife and Paris Hilton's mutual admiration society and appointing Alan Sugar as the Enterprise Czar.

It will backfire on him spectacularly when Sugar tells him...You're Fired! at the next cabinet meeting and goes on to become the Ultimate Unelected PM.

Just like vultures round a carcass. See how the media have joined in the feeding frenzy mounted by the Tories to destroy and devour Gordon Brown. What ever happened to objective journalism. Even from afar, this tawdry annihilation of a principled man is disgusting. If you had read some of the anti-Scottish bile vomited on the BBC website as comment on this matter, you would quickly realise how easily the masses are being duped by the Little Englanders and Home Counties self-preservation society, who are the chief protagonists in baying for Brown's blood. I have a certain degree of sympathy with the Nationalist cause, but those joining in this assault on Brown, are really only riding on the coat-tails of the Tories. That may be a strategically successful ploy, but it is despicable nonetheless, and very tiresome!

Ubi,

Yesterday, in front of the assembled media, Gordon Brown wanted to be candid. He wanted to accept responsibility for everything in general and accepted it for nothing in particular. He recalled again the fine words of his father who apparently instructed him to be honest, always. And in the spirit of this paternal wisdom he promptly lied his head off about almost everything he touched upon. Including his intentions to sack "my friend and colleague" Alistair Darling. His emissaries sent out earlier in the week to smear it off the record it to the same audience.

Who benefits from a dysfunctional government undergoing a slow, certain death rather than death now? Members of the Cabinet in well paying jobs. Otherwise unemployable MPs in decent salaries and allowances. The Labour party may recover a shade of support. In what possible sense could this be in the country's interests?

It is difficult to imagine a greater scoundrel still alive than Gordon Brown. Self, party, country: he personifies political evil. His old boy must be spinning in his grave.

Brown is as much a war criminal as Bliar and continued his horrendous mis-handling of the economy after becoming PM by manipulating the new chancellor, Alistair 'sweet lips' Darling, who was about as much use as a chancellor as my goldfish would be. You can't let this Marxist/NWO/Bilderberg scumbag off the hook. He should face indictment and a trial by his peers, prior to being hanged from the nearest yardarm.

It is a measure of Brown’s ineptitude that his attempt to deflect attention away from Labour’s disastrous showing in the English Local Government election has massively backfired on him.

The assembled journos in Downing Street for the re-shuffle press-conference were openly contemptuous of his lame attempt to justify the retention of Alastair Darling as Chancellor whilst at the same claiming to be “candid” and “open”.

This single incident not only exposed Brown’s essential weakness in terms of being driven by events and not in control of them, it also highlighted the duplicity and mendaciousness at the heart of his personality and character.

It is no coincidence that the media en-masse has now rounded on him and he is faced with a whole raft of disparaging headlines and uncomplimentary reporting this morning.

For the arch-conspirator himself to have totally lost the plot in such a spectacular and self-destructive manner is the clearest indicator yet that he is a dead man walking.

As to the mechanics of THAT sacking-I dont think HM the Queen actually played any part-the decision to dismiss the Whitlam government would have been made entirely in Aus with the Queen forced to rubber stamp the move. With regard to the current crisis in the Uk I am sure she would only intervene as a last resort. I am positive however that she will advise GB at their next briefing that now is the time...!

But, like when an injured horse needs to be put down, I'm beginning to feel sorry for the state Comrade Broon is getting in.

Watching the press conference yesterday, when he was asked about Caroline Flint resigning, he seemed to just crumble.

Everything else he said was from a script, but anything off script he was reduced to a stammering fool.

Are the New Labour Sleaze hierarchy letting him continue so as to gain a sympathy vote????

He has clearly lost it and needs putting out of his misery, and quickly.

Gordon brown has never been a good speaker at the best of times but under his current-largely self made difficulties,he cuts a sad figure. the press conference was cringeworthy. The thing that intrigues me is what really went on behind closed doors to turn Caroline flint around so dramatically. Either gordon brown is a really incompetent fool with zero people skills or Caroline flint genuinely is a pre-menstrual bit*h with a kamikaze streek aimed directly at the Party she professes to love.

Perhaps an element of both.

The £100billion pension theft (removal of dividend tax credits) took place under Brown as Chancellor in 1997, a full decade before the current recession.

This led to 60,000 occupational pension schemes being wound up and 125,000 people being left with little or no pension at all.

The de-regulation of the banking system was initiated in 1997 also, and ultimately led to the near collapse of the UK banking system.

The removal of the lower 10% income tax rate was also initiated by Brown, albeit implemented by Darling.

Let us get something clear once and for all:-

Brown moved into a grace and favour residence in Downing Street on his appointment as Chancellor after Labour won the 1997 General Election.

It was well-publicised at the time. Because the flat at No.11 was larger than that at No.10 and while Brown was single with Blair having a large family they swapped with Blair takig the flat at No.11 and Brown the one at No. 10.

As I have been asking for weeks and still not getting an answer - On what grounds did Brown have any entitlement to claim a single penny of expenses in respect of his London flat subsequent to that move into Downing St. in 1997?

As to Labour - they're dead. But, the likes of Flint and Blears should be ashamed of themselves. Especially Blears for defrauding the taxpayer. Do Labour members have no loyalty or backbone?

Maybe it's time for Scottish Labour, and Tory perhaps, to go it alone and join the SNP and Greens in promoting an independant Scotland?

If Brown was truly serious about putting the wishes of the whole country ahead of purely party political considerations, he would call a general election. The reason that he does not is because he knows that ZANU Labour is finished and he himself will be returned to the bleak industrial graveyard of South Fife. Though he has now lost all authority and (if he ever had any) sense of purpose his useless cabinet of dwarfs are shoring him up because to remove him will harm their own ambitions. We now have the glove puppet, Alan Johnson, as the temporary occupant of that revolving door position known as Home Secretary. The loathsome Yvette Cooper is now the Work and Pensions Supremo. Will she stave off job losses or repair the damage done by this Government to our pensions system? Fat chance!! The only bright moment occurred when Chancellor Darling thwarted the thuggish Ed Balls' march to the Treasury. Blair's Babes have morphed into WAGs (Women Against Gordon). For our further entertainment a stunt was arranged whereby the ludicrous Alan Sugar was handed a peerage and rolled on as enterprise 'tsar' – cut me just the tiniest break! The only one keeping this hilarious show on the road is my Lord Rumba of Rio - not previously known as El Gordo's bestest friend. We have surely just witnessed ZANU Labour's finest hour.

I honestly thought Brown would go yesterday. Wrong. I thought that someone in his discredited party would at least challenge him as leader. Wrong. For all his feckless incompetence, Brown is a stubborn old goat. He must command some kind of leadership qualities in his spineless party to still be in place.

Labour will wallow in their irrelevant and time-wasting leadership nonsense while the country further disintegrates. We need a general election like never before. Only the blindingly undemocratic and selfish diehard Labourites now disagree.

Labour robots still have that ironic song "Things can only get better" ringing in their thick ears! Things will get better, but only when Brown, his chums and the whole mirage of a moral Labour party are firmly booted into touch.

Kaufman blames 'obsessive disorder'

By Robert Verkaik

Saturday, 6 June 2009

Veteran Labour MP Sir Gerald Kaufman yesterday blamed a self-diagnosed "obsessive compulsive disorder" for making bizarre and extravagant claims on the public purse including £8,865 for a 40in LCD Bang & Olufsen television. Sir Gerald also said his condition led him to purchase a pair of Waterford Crystal grapefruit bowls for £220 on his parliamentary expenses.

Sir Gerald, 79, a former government minister, told the Manchester Evening News that his claim for the Bang & Olufsen TV was "daft", adding: "I'd self-diagnosed myself with obsessive compulsive disorder and I'd bought a new television set." Sir Gerald had already bought a similar TV without claiming for it. "Then I decided to have a bigger one," he said. "I thought to myself, 'Well, you can claim for a TV, so why not?'"

Sir Gerald said he needed two grapefruit bowls because one was for him and another "for any guests".

He said: "As part of my OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), I have the same breakfast when I'm at home both in London and Manchester every day," he said. "Half a grapefruit, a bowl of muesli with semi-skimmed milk and a cup of coffee with a Rich Tea biscuit. That's breakfast." A cleaner broke one dish, he said "so I got a replacement".

Sir Gerald also charged the taxpayer £225 for a rollerball pen and admitted when asked to explain his claims that they were "bizarre-sounding".

It was interesting to listen to that hitherto Labourite loyalist Angus MacLeod (from The Times) on GMS this morning.

He was scathing about the Alastair Darling cabinet retention in particular and Brown’s credibility in general.

When such a renowned loyalist as MacLeod is now turning the knife into Brown’s back, it can only be a matter of time before the fatal blow is finally administered.

Truly a case of “Et tu Angus?”

A fitting end for a government which began by vilifying lawful handgun owners and ushering in an age of enlightened despotism. The same government which gave us over 23 civilians killed by police with only one prosecution and NO convictions. The same government who warns of hundreds of terrorist threats each year as justification for a continuing erosion of the few remaining civil liberties enjoyed by British subjects. A government which has watched hot burglaries and violent assaults grow to twice the per capita rate of the USA. A government filled with politicians and civil servants who seek to shelter under the blanket of crown immunity.

"...experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed." And well Mr G Brown knows for he's betting his political career if not his life on it.

If replicated at a General Election the swing from the Tories to Labour at the local elections would result in a Tory majority of 24 seats.

The world has gone into the worst recession since the 1930s and for the last three weeks the dyed in the wool Tory Telegraph has dominated the entire news agenda with the MPs expenses scandal presenting the story to be as damaging as possible to Labour.

Cameron and the Tories have been given as easy a ride by the media as I can remember. There has been no questioning and no scrutiny.

And after all that the best the Tories are projected to achieve is a majority of 24.

The European election results and the expected success of UKIP will highlight the Tories' confusion over Europe.

In the next session of Parliament all MPs are required to disclose all directorships, consultancies and all outside employments and business interests, how much they are paid for them and how much time they spend on them. Which party is going to be most adversely affected by those disclosures?

Furthermore all MPs expenses and allowances claims are going to be thoroughly examined (which may be one explanation for the numerous cabinet resignations). The examination will be logical and dispassionate, not a media led frenzy where the public get more irate about someone claiming for a bath plug than by a multi millionaire like Cameron claiming the maximum housing allowance for his 'constituency' home while paying off the mortgage on his original property in cash.

There's a year to go to the next election.

It is to be hoped that the media and the public might just start to ask questions about the Eton/Oxbridge/Bullingden club dominated shadow cabinet.

Cameron is not delivering success for the Tories in spite of all the circumstances being so favourable to them. Hague, Clarke and others have no love for Cameron and his clique. Cameron will come under increasing pressure from within his own party in the run up to the election.

I predict that Brown will leave within 3 months to be replaced with a more charismatic and trustworthy candidate.
Voters are fickle, they will look elsewhere at the moment because the damage is so severe, but as soon as a new face arrives and begins to say the right things and is making friends in the media, suddenly that week in politics delivers a very different result.
I would'nt look to much into Labour results at the moment, a new man with renewed vigour can turn things around because politics is like that - the electorate dont like change.
I also think that is why Scotland has been part of the union for so long. Scottish people in general look at independence and think, hmmm that could be good, but for now I like it the way it has always been.
So I predict that Labour will make a remarkable come back by the time the next general election takes place.

Gordon Brown claims not to be "Arrogant" yet determines that he thinks he is the best man to lead the country out of the economic crisis (mostly of his making, and due to his incompetent financial, fiscal, and economic policies)... How arrogant is that?

Does she really think that ANYONE on this earth will ever believe another word she utters? He was part of that Glasgow contingent who never regarded themselves as heroes, only as ordinary working men who were striving to make the world a better place and free of fascism.

As weans, and being somewhat in awe of him, my siblings and I never quite understood why every Hogmanay, fuelled with a dram or three, he would stand up in family gatherings and sing a Spanish song “La Pasionaria”.

It was only when as we all later grew up that we realised the significance of this.

GB's ego must be the size of a tower block as he insists that he is the only one to lead the country out of the recession. Watching Brown at the press conference yesterday was somehow reminiscent of Nixon post Watergate, a man floundering, yet still trying to look as if in control.
His comments about the need for honesty were just plain nauseating.
Not only in terms of the expenses scandal, but also the whole sleaze e-mail saga.
His performance was undignified, desperately trying to cling on to the power he had so obviously desired, but never quite merited.
A man who turned his back on on his own country, who tried to lose his accent and Scottish identity in favour of a 'British' one, just to gain political advantage with a middle England, that clearly was never fooled by him anyway.
He lost a great deal of respect for that, and his performance yesterday said goodbye to whatever was left of it. A truly cringe-worthy spectacle.
Brown is not about to step down, he doesn't want to lose the power, that is so essential to a control freak like himself.
On top of all this, he actually believes he's the only one who can save us !
Home upbringing, religious influence perhaps ?
The sooner he gets pushed out, the better.

Joe -

I am from the planet that saw America vote Bush in for a second term - The planet that sees masses of people vote for Mugabe - The planet that sees Labour win seats in Glasgow at a time when it should be impossible to do so.
The planet that delivers monologues and performaces from a miriad of reporters only for it all to appear different a few months down the line.
A week is a long time in politics works both ways - good and bad! What is good can become bad and what is bad can become good.
So based on human reactions and our tendency to listen to the media, Labour need only appoint a new person who receives a few glowing reports and from nowhere the storm in the tea cup becomes the pretty summer cocktail that everyone wants to drink.

OK Brown goes and we get Cameron. What will change? The UK will still be in recession, people will still lose jobs and houses we will still have the debt mountain.
Unworthy MPs will swan off with large amounts of our money as 'a reward' for their public service while they were MPs. Would it not be better to put legislation through parliament to prevent this happening before a GE?

Even if Brown does the honourable thing and resigns as Prime Minister it is as likely that the rejection of Gordon Brown at the polls (which is what these arrogant pigs would have you believe happened)is also a rejection of the entire Labour government, and its performance.
There is one way to find out!
They have no moral right to govern ,and they know it fully well, which is why they are desperately trying to stay in office. They know that if they do call an election its bye bye LABOUR!

To suggest as Brown did that the people want him to carry on when its obvious that they want him to get out is arrogant enough, but to then suggest that if we replace Tweedledum with Tweedledee everything is rosy again shows Labour in their true colours (arrogance).

Gordon Brown was chief grunter but you were all at the pig trough!
CALL AN ELECTION because if you don't Labour will never be forgiven and will be humiliated when you do go!
At least at the moment you can in theory stay within striking distance and a hung parliament whilst unlikely remains a possibility.
To carry on in government when England has told you in no uncertain terms to go,is both unacceptable and will result in the destruction of any trust which once existed in LABOUR permanently.
When LABOUR behave like a dictator then they have no one to blame except their own stupidity and arrogance for the mess that LABOUR CREATED!
At least observe the democratic will of the people!Seek a mandate to govern and if you don't get one then you don't have one !

If Brown had called an election earlier when he thought he "might" have had a chance, things could have been different. Admittedly they would have lost, but he would now be the opposition leader blaming all the ills on the Conservatives. Chances are the Tories would have had one term. As it is - it's hard to see Labour coming back any time soon.

THEY JUST DID ! If you doubt this then measure it!

ENGLAND WANTS AN ELECTION. SO GIVE THEM ONE!

Seek the mandate to govern as is required in a democracy or you have no authority to impose government upon England which she DOES NOT WANT!

Whether you keep Broon or any of them for that matter is a decision which carries weight when we have established who governs. You support the United Kingdom so show some respect for the people of England who want you to call an election and its so obvious that even Labour know it which is why they wont call one! They already know the result.

You are correct, the people of England want an election, Broon is misguided that thinking by carrying on he has the support of the electorate. He Dosen't.

This is not just about expenses, this is about petty rules such as a mother being taken to court because she may have lied to get her kids into a better school. WHY AFTER 11 YEARS OF A LABOUR GOVT ARE ALL SCHOOLS NOT OF A VERY GOOD STANDARD

Petty rules: Scare stories about being fined for putting your bin out a day early.

ID Cards: This is not the English Way? its an excuse to raise revenue, much like everything else the labbour Govt has done. Gimmick policies such as marching kids to caspoints for on the spot fines!!!!............I could write a thesis on WHY ENGLAND WANT BROWN TO GO.

As an ex-labour activist, I dispair because the longer Brown stays, the worse will be the defeat, and years in wilderness.

Cammeron will not abolish the Scottish Parliament.... but relations will be tricky, scotland and england will need to come to an acceptable political balance.

On this D-day celebration day I am reluctant to say much more about this subject, as I know that my Granda would not approve of any criticism.

However, I will merely point out that his funeral, there was a wee group of a dozen or so veterans of the Glasgow International Brigades, displaying both the flag of the then Spanish Republic and our own Saltire.

Despite having fought in two World Wars, and being decorated by the British Army, they declined to send a representative.

I have no more to say upon this subject.

That acceptable balance will only really come with independence..both for England and Scotland.

Scotland is in effect already a politically (in many respects) independent country and Scotland needs to concentrate it's energies on it's own individual strengths and weaknesses.

169 A very minor addition to your comment (which I basically agree with).

The Scottish Labour party which was created by former Liberal supporters Keir Hardie and Cunningham Graham never really got off the ground, and eventually folded completely.
Both quickly became dissillusioned with Gladstone and decided a new party was needed whilst he was also editor of "The Miner" .
Cunningham Grahams real name was Bontine and he was very much the son of the wealthy landowning class and changed his name to hide his true origins which had little to do with his left wing views,a bit like Tony Benn if you like! Keir Hardie was a miners son whose mother taught him to read and write and was the leader of lanarkshire miners union, and led the first ever strike by them. He also had held home rule aspirations but not to the extent of his friend Cunningham Graham. This was not unusual in those days and even Lloyd George is known to have been a Welsh Nationalist but the time was not right if you wanted to achieve power!

Cunningham Graham then founded what eventually became the SNP. Keir Hardie joined a fledgling Independent Labour Party based primarily in Bradford with similar left of center views to the now defunct" Scottish" Labour Party and I think became candidate for Mid Lanarkshire . When he was elected to Westminster he was one of only two Labour Party Mps! Whilst he did help found the Independent Labour Party in 1893 and they did adopt KH as first president , it should not be confused with the Scottish (in favour of home rule)Labour Party which floundred but one of its founders went on to what is in fact now the SNP!

Many people in Scotland will say this is rubbish. As far as I am aware its historically correct.

You do the country a great disservice by clinging to power when you have been told unambiguously to vacate no 10 and no 11 and seek a mandate to govern.

If you take Brown as a man you find a person who is politically astute. I doubt there is a politician in Britain with his level of political intellect or economical sense. But because members of his party are incapable he is placed in the firing line. Unfair? Not at all, that is politics and he must fall on his sword. Labour are in the rebuilding process, kind of like Celtic at the moment, top people resigning, a little lost, without leadership and no real suitable candidate stepping forward to lead by example.

Blair closed down Austin Rover in Birmingham a few years ago without a by your leave, have you any idea how many people he put out of work, that seemed to be overlooked by the media, this wasnt just jobs in Birmingham, this was jobs all over the country, including Scotland, it was all the suppliers it involved too, no one seemed to pick this up, plus hualage companies who transported the goods to Oxford and Birmingham. Tony Blair was the biggest liar who was ever elected, he never once did what he said he was going to do, he is hated.

Brown a politician that sold the economy out for political power. He ruined most of the fundamental tenants of a solid economy.

As a political operator he is a nasty and vindictive. But not very astute and too into power and control. He simply has next to no redeeming features.

It's actually some percentage drop media. Obviously not if you are buying a beer - but quite a bit if you're buying a German car. Your €30,000 car has now cost an extra £450.

The pound used to buy €1.60, so we're now 46 cents worse off. Good for exports - bad for imports.

Further to my earlier posting about the origins of the Independent Labour Party which was NOT the same party as the Scottish Labour Party (but the SNP can claim that mantle perhaps) I thought I should clarify that whilst Keir Hardie contested Mid Lanarkshire as in ILP candidate he was unsuccessful. He was however elected when he contested WEST HAM and caused a major shock when he entered the house as the first ILP Mp wearing a cloth cap !
Whatever else you say about Heir Hardie he definitely was the real socialist, but would turn in his grave if he saw this bunch of money grabbing quisling trash.

There is another aspect to the threat hanging over the Brit Peso! The spectre of corruption in UK govt and the city of London

Perhaps the Unionists’ would care to explain why the UK Labour government had to face an OECD bribery probe due to its failure to ratify or comply with international anti bribery and corruption protocols?

Could the Unionistas also explain why the UK governments continually fail to ratify modern anti corruption laws?

Could the same Unionistas please explain why the OECD and the international community continue to express real concern about UKs present anti corruption and Bribery Laws?

I don’t think you need to answer that one as we know the answer already! The UK government is rotten and corrupt to its very core! It has been corrupt and rotten for a long time now!

Westmidden both Houses are predominantly occupied by the yes men and women for Pirates, Gangsters, Arms Suppliers, Flesh Traders and other Libertines! Beeznis is Beeznis! How much of our hard earned living is being siphoned off to offshore banking accounts by these vampires?

The UK government and Foreign Office ought to haul down the Union Jack and hoist the Jolly Roger instead! Well it is the growing perception of what the UK is internationally and domestically.

I guess Broonies Presbyterian Moral Compass has not been working for the last 12 years at least? As he of the one eye exclaims What Corruption, I see no Corruption. Broonie along with the rest of the Labour Party sold its soul if it ever had any when they appointed Blair as their Leader; The Tories never had a soul?

It is not a change of one Crime family for another that we need in Scotland – It Is Independence and a fresh start that we need before we are dragged further and further down with the diseased amoral cesspit that is the UK PLC.

#246 Jo'Burg Jock - I was checking the net to see if I could find a clip off Broon's gaffe...and I stumbled across this from "The Yorkshire Post" - another J Press Title.

Bernard Dineen: Brown's D-Day bungling is beneath contempt

Published Date: 01 June 2009
EVEN by his oafish standards, Gordon Brown has made a spectacular botch-up of the 65th anniversary of D-Day. If he had deliberately set out to insult the Queen, he could not have done a better job.

He began by saying there was nothing special about a 65th anniversary. In fact, this anniversary is very special because it will probably be the last time most of the veterans will be alive to take part. He refused them financial help to go to Normandy. There will be no commemoration service at Westminster Abbey.

The Government showed no interest at all until President Sarkozy announced that President Obama has been invited and the occasion would be "first and foremost a Franco-American ceremony" (French participation in D-Day was nil).

More than 80,000 British and Canadian troops landed on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944 – exceeding the 73,000 Americans who fought alongside them. This is not to diminish the bravery of the Americans, who suffered grave casualties on Omaha Beach. Thereafter, the Americans were in the majority, but on D-Day itself, the partnership was equal.

At the 60th anniversary, the Queen took the salute in Normandy from 1,200 veterans. This time she did not even get an invitation. It is easy to blame Sarkozy, but the real blame lies with Brown who showed no interest in British participation until he learned tha

Typical snide remarks about Prince Charles and his medals. Members of the Royal Family have never shirked military duties. It is always the case that the heir is never put at risk in conflict, yet he trained, but at a time when Britain was not at war. Harry has served in Afghanistan, Andrew in the Falklands, Duke of Edinburgh in the last war.

It was an insult by Gordon Brown not to have insisted the Queen be invited to what will be more than likely the last anniversary. He deliberately ignored her and what she and the veterans would have wanted. She has the power to ignore him. The people would only thank her if she now dissolved Parliament on the grounds that her Prime Minsiter does not hold the command of his own party let alone Parliament, and forced a fresh election.

You both know perfectly well the Queen is more popular than all the politicians put together, She is our Head of State and will be even after Scottish independence.

Is the German Brenda jibe the best you guys can do?. How pathetic you both are. Did either of you live through the last war. Ask any serviceman who lived through it whether they would rather see the Queen in Normandy or Gordon Brown, there would be no contest.
I am even sure they overwhelmingly prefered Prince Charles. The Royal Family have a great love of Scotland and the Scots, and for our population size probably spend more time here than even in England. I offer you the following as a widely sung song in the forces during the 1970’s.

Take from it from you will.

Scottish Breakaway (Coronation Coronach)
• (Trad / Thurso Berwick)
Chorus:
Nae Liz the Twa, nae Lilibet the One
Nae Liz will ever dae
We'll mak' oor land Republican
In a Scottish breakaway
Noo Scotland hasnae got a King
And she hasnae got a Queen
How can ye hae the Second Liz
When the First yin's never been
Her man he's cried the Duke o' Edinburgh
He's wan o' the kiltie Greeks
Och dinnae blaw ma kilt awa'
For it's Lizzie wears the breeks
He's a handsome man and he looks like Don Juan
He's beloved by the weaker sex
But it disnae really matter at a'
'Cause it's Lizzie that signs the cheques
Noo her sister Meg's got a bonny pair o' legs
But she didnae want a German or a Greek
Poor aul' Peter was her choice but he didnae suit the boys
So they sellt him up the creek
But Meg was fly an' she beat them by an' by
Wi' Tony hyphenated Armstrong
Behind the pomp and play the question o' the day
Wis, Who did Suzie Wong
Sae here's tae the lion, the bonnie rampant lion,
An' a lang streitch tae his paw
Gie a Hampdon roar an' it's oot the door
Ta-ta tae Chairlie's maw
(as sung by Alex Campbell)
Tune: The Sash My Father Wore

Scotland is occupied by an invading army for the last time in its history. The Imperial government at Westminster dispatches 12,000 English troops to secure Scotland. Six English tanks and 100 army lorries patrol the streets of Glasgow while Scottish troops are locked up in their barracks as it is feared that they would support the democratic will of the Scottish people rather than the decrees of the Imperial Parliament at Westminster. In a travesty of justice, the strike leaders are arrested, convicted of incitement to riot and imprisoned. These include Willie Gallacher (later Communist MP for West Fife), Davik Kirkwood (later Labour MP for Dumbarton, later Lord Kirkwood) and Emmanuel Shinwell (later Labour MP for Linlithgowshire, later Lord Shinwell).

Nobody seems to have commented on this expurgated version on Geri Peevs blog at the Steamie...Come on wakey wakey.

Sir, I have noted with disgust the comments of a certain Mr Gordon Brown who has accused me of doing well out of the recession after reading the letter published in The Times from 40 top industrialists.

I do not know who Mr Gordon Brown is. Excuse my ignorance, but I don't. Whoever he is (shadow trade and industry secretary), he has not done his homework properly. The man doesn't know what he's talking about. How he has the audacity to say that Amstrad, or Alan Sugar, has flourished in recession is a complete mystery to me.

[..] Labour offers no sort of route out of recession. It's out of date and - as Brown's remark shows - it hasn't done its homework.

No! the German thing is true. This Saxe Coburg Gotha mob are indeed GERMAN. There is no intention of "jibe" or any other snide remark. The fact is that this so called "monarchy" are GERMAN, and that's it.

I agree Observer. the forces fought against fascism and not for the Royal Family but there were members of the Royal Family who fought and died. including the Queen's uncle the Duke of Kent,

And as for the Battle of George Square, my granduncle was a Glasgow policeman at the time and he would not take part in suppressing the strike as did many in the police. Hence the government of the time (yes elected politicians) sent in the army from England with tanks.

Even I am aware of the history of Glasgow and that incident. I featured in my granduncle's police record which I once read in the Mitchell Library.

Or the bit where I said that the Tories seemed to think the Holy lamb of God was blessed to be in England rather than the other way around ? 339 a fair point Huntly, the Royal family did show bravery during the War that is true. And the present Queen gives every indication of being personally a decent old bird who has worked hard and taken her duties seriously. But she's a figurehead who has no real role to play in politics, as much as we might wish her to dispatch Brown and his cabinet to the Tower and display their subsequently severed heads stakes on London Bridge, that must alas remain a fantasy.

Thats democracy, or perhaps a sign that democracy is failing because the Political classes in Westmidden and Brussells are out of touch?

The residents of England voted overwhelmingly for Thatcher in thier time - perhaps they are just going back to thier natural home in voting for the BNP and UKIP? Whatever England is heading further and further to the right and if this last election included the Urban conurbations you would have seen an even larger bloodbath of Labour councillors!

Well dolts, the poor, the academics and millionaires alike get to vote or stay at home, thats democracy or perhaps just the failure of the Tory Party, The Fib Dummers and the Labour Party south of the border. Or a symptom of a system that has become utterly unrepresenative of the majority of the residents of England?

Contrast with the last local elections in Scotland, the last Holyrood election where PR is employed and no BNP candidates were elected! No UKIP either! Although you would have thought the BNP system would have allowed them an opening!

397 the tragedy is Iain that there are a whole host of English people like Jane who are NOT Tories and who despise the BNP just as much as we do.

I used to believe for years that we were engaged in a class struggle and that it didn't matter if you were English or Scottish it was all the same. For various reasons I have changed my mind.

But how I square the circle is by thinking that the best way I can support English people who oppose the right is by supporting Scottish independence, because that will create a dynamic in England that currently isn't there.

They are far more unsafe than cannabis dear, and anyway we are in one of the few countries where it is illegal. What about the Netherlands? Fantastic fitba players and they jist beat Engerland at CRICKET ffs.

439 Obs.

It's not the cannabis that makes you paranoid. Let me explain. Cannabis makes you more aware, and you then realise what a load of kerrapp is going on and you may focus on a particular load of kerrapp that is, erm a bit scary, like homing in on the thought of trident multi-head nuclear missiles, or assholes that behead people for coming from somewhere they don't like because of the idiots who somehow got in to run the place who are the REAL paranoid clowns who invade others' countries to steal their stuff and stop them doing what they arent doing anyway because some other lot of paranoid religious nutters say they are and are going to get them and,,,, it does make you ashamed to be human, not the cannabis, the awareness of all those negative vibes that admittedly without cannabis seem normal or at least you are not as sensitised to the negativity and danger of it all. It's the real world that makes you paranoid when you think about it, and no wonder when you look at it closely.

I take it there is plenty of green stuff in Brighton then?

There is nane up here. That's why I chucked it, cos the other stuff is mixed with who knows what and tastes rotten and it has also disappeared, because of the falling value of the pound I heard, but who knows and who cares. It shouldn't be illegal anyway while tobacco and alcohol isn't. That's all I am saying and I am sure there are millions who think the same.

The news that Mr Brown overclaimed on his expenses will further weaken his position, and will strengthen the hand of ministers whose own questionable expense claims might have been used as a reason to remove them.

A detailed analysis of Mr Brown's expense claims also reveals that the Prime Minister claimed £30 on his office expenses for the cost of hiring a bagpiper to play at a ceremony for veterans.

So it's dead cool or really sound to discuss your drug habits here. Well vote for yir Tory Party and despite Cameron's admissions ye'll still get busted. We, or should I say the majority of posters here, are about to elect the most right wing Tory goverment ever here. "You can call me Dave" "hey Dave", will probably be a capital offence once elected, they don't know any different. At least Thatcher had one foot in reality.
If you are all so unhappy with The Scotsman being a New Labour rag etc. why don't you join the mailings at the Telegraph? The standard of argument, spelling and general demeanour of a lot of the postings here is an utter embarrassment to Scotland. Don yir baseball cap, load the mobile in yir hand and take the "staffie" doon to the pub to watch RangersCeltic oan the T.V.
You will all regret this new found support of right wing politics. And ... before you say "Whit's he oan .. quite a nice couple o' lines o' coke and a smithering o' vodka.
