DAVID Davis's by-election campaign on the issue of 42 days will be just the first salvo in a major "freedom" campaign led by the former shadow home secretary.
Supporters of the Tory MP said they are gearing up for a relentless campaign on issues such as ID cards and the surveillance state, claiming they want to redraw the Conservatives as the party of liberty, against the authoritarian Labour Party.

Davis will set out his agenda in the coming week as he aims to link the new law allowing the police to detain suspects for 42 days without trial to his wider campaign. One ally said: "David is making it clear that the only truly libertarian party out there is the Conservative Party. That is what the Tory Party was about and should be about for the future."

But there are growing fears that Davis's relentless focus on civil liberties will put further pressure on leader David Cameron as he seeks to hit back at claims he is soft on terror.

Westminster was awash with rumours last night that Glasgow baggage handler John Smeaton was being urged by Labour to stand as an anti-terror candidate in the forthcoming campaign. The claims were rubbished by Downing Street.

Gordon Brown will this week lead a fresh assault on the Tories, pointing to Davis's opposition to CCTV cameras and the fact that the 7/7 bombers were only caught because of such surveillance.

Davis intends to campaign against so-called 'hate laws', which he claims stifles legitimate debate, pointing to the example of a 15-year-old boy recently charged for describing Scientology as a "dangerous cult".

He will also attack new powers which allow the state to enter a private citizen's house, along with the build-up of databases within central Government, on which personal details are kept.

Yesterday, Davis's successor as shadow home secretary, Dominic Grieve, conceded that the events of last week had been a "distraction" for the party.

He was also tackled by Labour critics who pointed to comments he made in 2005 when he claimed the London 7/7 attacks were "totally explicable" because of the resentment felt by the Muslim community.

Davis is expected to resign as an MP this week, triggering a by-election, but it looks increasingly likely that Labour will decline to contest the seat.

A story that has absolutely nothing to do with Scotland.

Gordon Brown would do well to focus a little more on internal security. Not content with putting the lives of our servicemen on risk in the front line, he is now orchestrating a campaign at home to supply our enemies with as much 'intelligence' as possible.

Why doesn't he just get his flunkies to publish it on the internet, it would save a lot of costs of (presumably) 1st class rail tickets.

A politican who is prepared to stand up for what he belives in and do something about it, a rareity !
Perhaps if some of the Labour mp's who rebelled against the govenment in the vote, did the same as David Davis, then perhaps Gordon Brown might take note , or as he likes to keep saying " Im listening ".
Who is to say that the legislation will not be abused ? trust Gordon ? no way !!
Remember the women peace campaigner who was arrested under anti terror laws for reading out the names of those who at died in Iraq, at the cenataph ?
Walter Wolfgang, who was dragged out of the Labour party conference for daring to be herd exclaiming loudly, "rubbish" at Jack Straws speech.Think on it, this is an aurthoritarian govenment and the sooner it is swept from office, as it will be, the better. We need more like David Davis.

three cheers for David Davis, the only thing missing from this country as a prison is the bars.
Freedom of the british people is being eroded daily,
people are even afraid to voice an opinion lest they be done by some crazy law made by the labour lot.
the persecution of the british people must stop.
it is to hoped that when the labour pile are booted out at the next election, they stay out for ever
they have destroyed this country, they are a disgrace!!

I would have had terror detention set at 80 days, Davis. And so would the majority of people in the British Isles if polling is to be beleived.

#5 Hi Spook,

The criminals are bad, but what bothers me, and may also bother you, is that as a person who has no convictions and no criminality, it may just be fate that YOU end up being wrongly locked up for something you haven't done.

As a former police officer I ended up leaving because of seeing some pretty foul injustice. There is only so much you can do from on-side, and then you see a wide vein of the system is subject to regular abuse. After all humans are very infallible and the police system is full of infallible humans. Don't get me wrong, the majority are good. Indeed there are many very good cops.

But it is the minority that will lock YOU up.

That is what really bothers me about ID cards and the rest of the incidious Orwellian erosion of freedoms in the UK.

I could give you 100 examples of miscarriages of justice. The most notable recent one shown on BBC Scotland about the murder of Drew Forsyth. Titled: "Corrupt Cops: The Inconvenient Truth", it illustrated the story of former Fife Chief Superintendent Richard Munro, who in 1996 helped to wrongly convict Steven Johnston and Billy Allison for life for Drew's murder.

Can you imagine being in Steven Johnston's shoes for example? It was made literally evident that he did not commit this crime. The man's life is in ruins. Worse, the real killer is still out there free to kill again.

No my friend, THE problem with ID cards, 42 Detention and the rest, is that the government need to sort out their own house and get that in order before bringing in ever more Draconian, AND fallible laws.

it makes me gag, but i agree with Davis, liebour's socialism has turned authoritarian, they want to control (& tax) our liberty, 'nanny state' is a nice soundbite used by the media, but its far worse than that, terrorism is used to keep the population in Fear Ucertainty & Doubt. We didnt need 42 or more days to interogate IRA suspects, why do we need them for Muslim terrorists. I don't think that any terrorist would give anything of use to the security services, whether it be 1 day or 1000 days. Unless you value the info gained by torture ?

Someone said :-
“WHY shouldn't terrorist suspects be held up for 42 days? If people do nothing wrong, they should have nothing to fear from this legislation.”

So why then, in the past and still currently, are the Politicians spouting the same load of baloney, yet fighting like hell, at enormous expense to the taxpayer, not to have to declare details of their ‘expenses!’

The 'Legislation' may be OK - it’s the untrustworthy crowd of devious and dangerous Politicians alongside the 'alleged' Justice system and the authoritarian bodies in the land that we are lumbered with, which nowadays create tremendous fear in the ‘innocent’ Public - and all seemingly Political planned and organised!

Their current ‘freakish’ desire to get total control of everything and everyone - which I feel sure they will achieve eventually - by hook or by crook - if they are not carefully watched, because, at the end of the day, in any matter they are involved with, I think they don’t give two hoots about Legislation, Law or anything else if it gets in their way! No doubt they will always have ‘ways and means’ of proving they have ‘done no wrong’, which, with the way they seem to have ‘all the authorities’ sitting comfortably in their grasp, simply awaiting instructions accordingly, will always be ‘No problem!’ Such seems to be British politics of to-day!

Come the EU take-over, already being very ably assisted by New Labour in getting the Nation ‘acclimatised’ to simply ‘obey orders!’

As we see, with the Politicians and their shameful attitude with the Irish vote ‘against’ in their ‘Democratic’ referendum - which they already appear to be treating as of ‘no concern!’ That surely speaks volumes for their future intentions - they intend to ‘win’ every time!

Furthermore I cannot help thinking they will do ‘all that it takes - regardless’ to ensure they can never be defeated when they are in total charge of all and everything! Probably a simple matter of ‘Button Pressed’ - job

15 Cont'd.....

Furthermore I cannot help thinking they will do ‘all that it takes - regardless’ to ensure they can never be defeated when they are in total charge of all and everything! Probably a simple matter of ‘Button Pressed’ - job done!

Is this what we really want?

It seems ‘Hitler’ and his ideas are not yet quite as dead as we thought!

Gordon Brown, not being a man of his word, must certainly have ‘his’ God worried stiff by going along with such a ‘mental crowd’ of unelectables - and electables, as he is doing - must have deserted ‘his’ God for these other aspiring ‘untouchables!’

To quote that well known comedian Dave Allen, sadly no longer with us - ‘May his God go with him’ - but I doubt very much He will

"I would have had terror detention set at 80 days, Davis. And so would the majority of people in the British Isles if polling is to be beleived."

I'd rather live in a country where a few people died at the hands of terrorists but which maintained fundamental liberties for all. Our fathers didn't feel the need to surrender liberties when the entire machinery of the Nazis waged war on us and yet we'll give them up because a few halfwits with bombs and burning cars.

What are we? Cowards?

I'm beginning to wonder whether Eddie Barnes, Lenny Farquharson and the entire political staff of Scotland on Sunday haven't got this whole story wrong.
They seem unaware of the following:
(1)All the blogs and radio phone-ins show strong support for David Davis.
(2) Bob Marshall-Andrews (Labour MP) has publically offered to campaign for Davis. It is rumoured that Ian Gibson (Labour MP) has also offered his support.
(3) The latest poll (YouGov; Sunday Times) shows the Tory lead over Labour has widened since Davis resigned.
(4) It seems that one reason why Labour daren't contest the by-election is because their prospective candidate doesn't support 42 days detention. This came out on Newsnight on Friday.

Perhaps the polical staff of SoS should pay less heed to the new Labour etabliashment and gossip in the Westminster village and get about more.

"I would have had terror detention set at 80 days, Davis. And so would the majority of people in the British Isles if polling is to be beleived."

Yet strangely they complain when Mugabe locks up opposition leaders during an election. To be consistent, they should cheer until the 43rd day, and then complain.

As Iain MacWhirter said in the Herald today, if this was lunacy it was inspired lunacy.

Those who deride Davis are already finding there is more support for his stand than at first imagined, support from across the political spectrum.

There will be millions like myself who will be absolutely delighted that someone is taking a stand about the UK's dalliance with a Police State and that will include many senior policemen.

it is to be hoped that David Davis is fully backed in his fight for the British people to regain there freedom
we have watched this country descend into a pit of evil
where the innocent are persicuted, and the guilty go free
brown and his mob have stunk out this country
the evil done by this labour goverment can never be repaired
I never thought that I would see the day that this country would be so destroyed.
