Crisis? What crisis? Controversial councillor defends hiring PR help

Deposed committee chairman who blocked Trump proposal claims his situation requires special help

SIX months ago he was a little-known, if slightly eccentric, rural councillor with a predilection for cycling to work.
But Martin Ford, the chairman of Aberdeenshire Council's planning authority who stymied Donald Trump's plans for a £1 billion golf resort, has hired a crisis-management public relations firm in the run-up to the public inquiry into the plans.

Mr F
ord was catapulted into the headlines as the Nemesis of Donald Trump when he used his casting vote to reject the plans on 29 November last year.

Earlier this week Mr Ford and the Trump empire were again at loggerheads after the councillor for East Garioch accused the property tycoon of trying to "gag" him at the forthcoming public inquiry into the development.

Mr Ford's register of interests at the council, under the heading of gifts and hospitality, lists "consultancy services received at discounted rate from Fan Hitter PR."

John Cox, the independent councillor for Banff and Buchan who led the call for Councillor Ford to be deposed as chairman of the council's infrastructure services committee, slammed Mr Ford's decision to take on a PR firm.

He declared: "It is definitely not a sensible thing for a councillor to be doing. You have to stand or fall by your own ability.

"It is just beyond belief what councillor Ford is trying to do. Neither I nor any of my colleagues would ever contemplate such a thing but it shows the weaknesses in his case that he is having to go down this line."

Mr Cox, who was one of the seven councillors who voted in favour of the Trump development at the planning meeting, added: "At the end of the day we have to be accountable to ourselves and to the public. But Councillor Ford is a one-man show and perhaps he needs all the help he can get."

Mr Ford, however, defended his decision to accept the offer of assistance from the PR company and its boss, Caroline Weintz.

He explained that Ms Weintz had approached him to offer her help after he was removed from his post. Mr Ford said: "I really didn't think any more about it, but come the new year it was apparent that I was going to need some help."

He was swamped with demands for comments from the media and simply did not have the facilities or the time to cope with the demand.

"It has been put to me why the heck does a local councillor need a PR firm," said Mr Ford. "Well, a normal local councillor doesn't. But I am not leading the life of normal local councillor.

"I am paying for the services at a much reduced rate. It would be inconceivable for me to afford to pay a PR firm."

Ms Weintz explained: "I approached Councillor Ford on behalf of Fan Hitter PR to offer support and advice following the disgraceful removal of him from the Infrastructure Services Committee because I clearly recognised that a great injustice had been carried out and that there were huge principles of democracy at stake. This remains the case."

She added: "Fan Hitter PR specialises in crisis communications management as well as providing PR support.

"A large number of national politicians seek advice and support from public relations companies. It is unusual for local politicians to require public relations support.

"However, Councillor Ford's situation is far from normal."

WHO'S WHO IN THE MENIE ESTATE PUBLIC RELATIONS BATTLE

IN the Trump Corner: the American tycoon's organisation has enlisted the Big Partnership, one of Scotland's largest public relations firms, to deal with the media in the Menie estate planning application.

In the Ford Corner: Fan Hitter, one of Scotland's newest and smallest PR firms. Fan Hitter is headed by Caroline Weintz, the former corporate affairs manager at NHS 24.

Big, established eight years ago, employs 90 staff in four offices, with fee income of £7 million a year. The company's website boast that its client list reads like a Who's Who of UK business, including Deloitte, BP and Stagecoach.

Fan Hitter has a staff of three and was formed last summer. The company's website does not list any clients, although it insists it has a number in Scotland and south of the Border.

Big's website states: "We deploy a range of core PR services including stakeholder engagement campaigns, media relations, media promotions, copywriting, online PR, corporate social responsibility strategies and activities, internal communications and crisis/issues management.

"Big brings together wise counsel, a laser-like focus on client needs, a passion for delivery and access to some of the most sparkling PR talent you'll find anywhere."

Fan Hitter's website states: "Good or bad, words can have a substantial impact on public confidence and self morale. When words cause you a crisis, tackle the problem head on with Fan Hitter PR.

"At Fan Hitter PR we don't do spin – we do more than that – we provide top-of-the-range intelligent and knowledge-based solutions for your PR problems. We take a holistic approach to communications which draws on some of the most highly experienced and respected communications practitioners in Scotland."

I think Trump should get the job of running that council!! ... I think our jaws would drop at how much waste a proper business person like Trump could cut out.

I shudder to think how inept these squander monkey councillors and civil servants are.

On one hand you have a planning department on a power trip !? They cannot be seriously -- On the other hand you have a chap wanting to invest £1billion, to provide jobs, and a ongoing tourist attraction which will boost the local economy ... Can someone explain to me how the council are looking after the common good when they sand a message to investors throughout the world ' don't come here with your money we'll make your life hell!'

I suspect that Mr Trump did not put the brown envelopes in the right place and there is a wee hissy fit being had --- it will all come out in the wash !

Another day, another press article about Martin Ford, with or without his PR partner.

Like I said before, It seems that the Councillor has ideas away beyond representing his constituents. Then again, he never really did do that. He represents only his own views.

I wonder what the majority of his fellow councillors really think? I mean, after criticizing his own LD leader, after trying to get the PI Reporter to disregard the true views of the council, and after THAT decision, I'm sure they must think he is on another planet.

Looking forward to Trump tearing him to bits.

Ford is opposed by dark forces who also use PR firms, so this makes sense. You don't have to be tree-hugger to see through this housing scam. Why are locals so short sighted? Go and see what happened at Forgan by St Andrews!

Seems to me that this guy is being pilloried for voting the way he thought best. That's democracy. Some folk can't deal with this and can only see $signs and themselves lining their pockets bigtime. Seems to me that Scotland is no longer being sold for English gold but for yankee dollars. Ford v Trump is a David and Goliath situation but greed with prevail.

Anyone who has spent time in the Sahara desert will tell you how valuable a strech of sand is. When an opportunity like the Donald Trump proposal comes along and all that is required of said stretch of sand is that golf balls are occasionaly smacked across it then it beggars belief that the Martin Fords of this world should stand in the way of things. Although not native to the area he wishes to preserve things just the way he found things when he arrived, at the expense of the local populace who see the benefits of a development which actually enhances the natural environment to a large extent.

Such intelligence, such considered judgement! Just throw the entire planning Law of Scotland and the UK out of the window? For the last time will you lot understand - Mr Ford did NOT cast a personal vote. He followed Aberdeenshire Council's STANDING ORDERS - which are that if a committee is split 50-50 on a controversial application - the Chairman MUST cast his deciding vote in favour of NO CHANGE - i.e. for the status qup. The point of this rule is that any issue which splits the committee so profoundly MUST be remitted to an APPEAL - so that a wider and deeper investigation of the issues can take place. That is exactly what Mr Ford did; he did his duty as an elected Councillor and he has been vilified, sacked (probably illegally)and has ahd the financial and PR juggernaut of the Trump Empire thrown against him. He deserves justice and better treatment from the SNP 'democrats' who don't appear to understand WHY planning law exists.

#15 Ford's actions since show VERY MUCH that his was a personal vote, as much against the applicant as the application. And he STILL thinks he was in the right. He should take a look around him.

My problem with it was the Chriss Evans type Schoolboy- Humour encoding of of the sweary word as in TFI Friday...Tee hee hee, the old fossils at the Beeb don't realise TFI stands for THANK FUCK IT'S.

You will note my comment at #1 has been deleted and the only naughty word that I used was spelled thus :

"Sh!t" if I had wanted to be rude I would have said
Shit!

Oh Fiddlesticks! the Pooh has realy hit the Propellers now!

Could be that Fan Hitters is a generic Mockney Rhyming Slang phrase, describing PR companies and their ilk in general.

Ford is conning everybody. The real reason why he's making so much fuss is to get local publicity for free, as he has presented himself as the solution for all the students in Aberdeen Uni problems. He does not care anymore about Trump, he's only concern with being elected Rector.
23

mobocaster,

Why not hire a PR firm? After all, he is up against a very slick media & legal operation with probably no-expense spared.

#15 Tweedmouth. Well said! It is good to see there are some people around who can recognise this is the top of a very slippery slope relating to the governance of Scotland being compromised by big business and sycophant politicians. The big boys have dug themselves into a very deep hole and are Very Scared that they won't be able to get out! Bluster away and ricochet around you other pathetic excusers, when it comes to the enquiry your pals will sweat! Mr Ford is a honorable person who did what he was supposed to do. The bully boys may win, but if they do, it will be at the expense of honesty and moral integrity. The majority of you are nothing better than playground bullies, I hope it gives you a warm feeling of smug satisfaction, it will fit in nicely with Salmond's manner.

Why can't I use my usual name?,

Good luck, Martin Ford. Hopefully the inquiry will see through this glorified housing scheme proposal.

I think you got that wrong..should it not read 'Trump is conning everybody?'

The one thing that you can't criticise about Martin Ford is his integrity. Whereas Donald Trump...

Trump could do a better job at running the council. Mind you anyone could do a better job. That wouldn't be hard.

Herr Hitler go himself a PR company - well he certainly needs one. See Ford lost the vote again. LOSER.
