Published Date: 23 April 2008
VOTING ended in Pennsylvania on Tuesday in the increasingly nasty Democratic battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, with Clinton hunting a convincing win that would keep her White House hopes alive.
Results were not immediately available in Pennsylvania, where Clinton was favored but needed a substantial victory to gain ground on Obama and convince party leaders she would be the best candidate to face Republican John McCain in November's presidential election.

Her one-time 20-point lead over Obama in the state slipped to single digits in many polls amid an onslaught of advertisements by Obama, who outspent her 2-to-1 in the first nominating contest in six weeks.

Both camps tried to play down expectations before the vote.

"This was always an uphill climb but what we feel is that we've made significant progress," Obama said at a diner in Pittsburgh. "A lot of it is going to depend on turnout today and it's really hard to gauge."

A record number of Pennsylvanians are registered to vote and turnout was heavy at many polling places, local media said.

Exit polls showed Clinton won about 58 percent of those who made their choice in the last week. Obama was on the defensive over a series of campaign controversies in a Philadelphia debate last week, and Clinton questioned his toughness in an ad on Monday featuring images of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Voters also were not happy with the race's negative tone. About two-thirds of Pennsylvania voters thought Clinton unfairly attacked Obama, while about half thought Obama had unfairly attacked Clinton, the polls showed.

The Pennsylvania vote opens the final phase of the Democrats' hard-fought duel for the nomination. Nine more contests are scheduled before the campaign voting ends on June 3.

Hmm ...,

... Hillary says that "if she were in the White House, the United States could "totally obliterate" Iran in retaliation for a nuclear strike against Israel."

Does she mean the way the USA obliterated Saddam? Or does she have a nuclear strike in mind? If so, thanks for the warning Hillary - we don't need another gung ho President in the White House. The last one has made a real mess of international politics but has avoided adding to radioactive fallout.

Peace Man.

With apologies to
Country Joe & the Fish

Come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
he's got himself in a terrible jam
way down yonder in Afghanistan
so put down your books and pick up a gun
we're gonna have a whole lotta fun
(CHORUS)
And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop Afghanistan
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die
Come on generals, let's move fast
your big chance has come at last
now you can go out and get ragheads
cos the only good muslim is the one that's dead
and you know that peace can only be won
when we've blown 'em all to kingdom come
Come on wall street don't be slow
why man this war is a go-go-go
there's plenty good money to be made
by supplying the army with the tools of its trade
let's hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
they drop it on the Taleban
Come on mothers throughout the land
pack your boys off to Afghanistan
come on fathers don't hesitate
send your sons off before it's too late
and you can be the first ones on your block
to have your boy come home in a box

Scullion,

The American people love a cowboy (cowgirl)who'll blow your head off as fast as pray for you.
I was watching Hillary respond to a question about being touched by the Holy Spirit. It was painful watching this intelligent woman wallow in maudlin sentiment as she tried to show her spiritual side to a nation where most people believe in angels.
In any other country such a question would have brought guffaws but in the U.S., millions hung on every word.

Hillary is winning by ten points:)))

Scullion, you're the usual anti-American hypocrite who writes lies; nothing new with that.

Violence doesn't stop at the Canadian border, although free speech does.
An example: who were the Canadian warriors last night who beat the crap out of a police car with bats?
They sure did blow off a whole lot of violence.

I really dislike generalizations.

Scullion (or is it Sullen?) I don't think you believe the silly generalization about Americans. It is amusing to hear (a handful) of Canadians make these comments when 75% of the population of this enormous country lives within 90 miles of the undefended US border. Our countries are so intertwined culturally they are indistinguishable. We love and befriend Canadians as much as our angels. And you have a pretty good cowboy heritage up in the north too.

Truthfully a Michigander has much more in common with someone living in Windsor than say someone from Atlanta. Yet even those are pretty tiny when you think about it.

Voting Ron Paul

Really, dork? Then how come you, by your own admission, passed on 'boring' Canadian history so that you could study the much more 'interesting' American history?

Read comment #11 - after all, you wrote it.

Don't you get tired of being a hypocritical phony, Scullion?

Scullion - you will see this the rest of your life here, because thanks to 'Suck McCrunchie', I've made it my mission in life to be right here on 'The Scotsman'.

You have a number of options, however:

1. You can change your name. Join TSW, Suck, britfree, britsout, Roberta Burns and the rest of the anonymous, faceless, brainless trolls that wander about the bowels of the internet searching for a personality:

2. You can call off your old, tired stereotypes and admit that most Americans actually really, really like Canadians (even though they don't know enough about you, IMHO) and aren't really that bad.

The choice is yours, eh?

PS - Don't blame the US because all of your hockey players would rather live here. Where would YOU rather live the life of a rich athlete - Calgary or Los Angeles? ;)

I really hope Hils' embarassing squirm indicates she is just mouthing the mantra like a Mason with his trouser leg up and a nipple on display. That is she knows it's a load of p!sh but necessary to get elected.

The last thing the world needs is more religiosity in government. I pray (sic) for the day when a candidate can look a journalist in the eye and tell him the church and state are separate and "nou n'avons besoin de cette hypothese".

Really, think about it; only religious faith allows a black & white view on rectitude such as would cause a whole group of people to hate another.

A lot of grumpy folk here this morning taking a shot at Scullion.

He makes a good point. A prominent presidential candidate talks of obliterating a country. Presumably she thinks that the "blow your head off" talk will win votes. Is she wrong? It's a little ironic as the president of Iran is frequently castigated for, among other things, wanting to wipe another country of the map of the world.

I'm not sure about the spiritual thing. Are there angels in America or not? Does anyone know?

I suggest you don't put that at the top of your resumé. :-)

Hillary has proven herself a great campaigner.

It is a true accomplishment when an anti-gun liberal can gain votes on the gun control issue.

Let us see how this pair of losers will do against our future President, John McCain.

Oh, waahhh. I generally post in response to stereotypes, which I paste in quotes before my response so that I have them EXACTLY RIGHT. If people post foolish stereotypes then they will be treated like fools.

If you had a long enough attention span, you would also have noticed a compliment from me:

"most Americans actually really, really like Canadians (even though they don't know enough about you, IMHO)..."

So read the whole post before you whine next time and if you had bothered to read the posts preceding mine, you'll find that there are a number of people that dislike his lame stereotypes also, perhaps even more than I do.

Hillary knows that Iran will never attack Israel by nuclear bombs because such attack would have catastrophic results for Iran and the Muslims living in and around Israel. Almost a third of Israel’s population are Palestinians and Muslims that Iran wants to help and free, any nuclear attack on Israel would kill a large number of these people too which defeats the object of attacking Israel in the first place. Any nuclear attack on Israel also will have catastrophic results for the Muslim countries neighbouring Israel as the radiation leak would engulf most of the Muslim countries in the Middle East. Iran also has to think about retaliation as Israel too has nuclear bombs and will retaliate and kill a large number of people in Iran; Tehran’s population alone is over 10 million which is twice the whole Israel population.

#11. Scullion does not speak for most Canadians as i am sure that you are not the voice of the American people. It does you no good to discredit my country because you don't like one of the posters. Just a reminder: Our country was settled only 11 years after yours was. We have like you a long interesting history. We don't study American history because ours is boring. If you took the time to read up on Canadian history, i am sure you would find it as interesting as we find reading yours. It is true that many of our N.H.L. hockey players play in the U.S. They are drawn there because they are drafted by the U.S teams and sign with them. The salary is the main draw. I wouldn't pass up several million a year to work in the U.S. It is interesting that at least 50 N.H.L. hockey players live in Kelowna during the off season. Not bad for a city of slightly more than 100,000 population.regards

My comments were pointed at Scullions generalizations of Americans, not at any other Canadians. I included a link to HIS statements concerning his feelings on American History, as HE is the one that said that he preferred the more interesting US History, not me! (check the link, comment #11)

To be fair, please read all of my post.

In fact, I also said:

"most Americans actually really, really like Canadians (even though they don't know enough about you, IMHO)..."

which is the same way I feel.

It would be nice if you guys complained about statements like his ("The American people love a cowboy (cowgirl)who'll blow your head off as fast as pray for you." instead of only making a statement against us, when we respond.

As for the 'hockey' comments, I apologize to Canadians for those - the Sharks Fan part of me took over for a bit last night! ;)

American generalizations come from PRESS IN AMERICA. A poor excuse for press at that. For example if you take a few seconds and figure out the percentage that Hillary won by, you will find out that it comes to 9.4 per cent. Now when you consider that our press is owned by scumbag ELITIST PIGS, it makes sense that they took liberties and put it at 10...........hmmmmm. However as we all learned in grade school it should have been rounded to the single digit 9. Open your eyes people.

What you have laid out is a rational assessment of the nuclear calculus in the area. However, your unspoken assumption is that the Iranian leaders are rational men. This issue is is doubt. The president of Iran and many of his clerical supporters have an apocalyptic world view and they welcome the notion of mass annihilation because they believe that this we bring in an era where everyone will be a muslim.
