THEY are the new casualties of President Robert Mugabe's desperate clampdown on political dissent – up to half a million Zimbabwean children left without health care and food.
The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, warned yesterday Zimbabwe's ban on international aid groups and NGOS in the country has left hundreds of thousands of children helpless.

"The net effect is as many as 500,000 children are now not receiving the health care, HIV/AIDS support, education assistance and food that they require. Many of these children are orphans," UNICEF said in a statement.

Last week Zimbabwe's government banned international organisations doing fieldwork. Mr Mugabe accused the West of using them to channel funds to the opposition ahead of the 27 June presidential run-off vote.

The charity World Vision, which has projects across Zimbabwe, echoed UNICEF's concerns and appealed to Zimbabwe's government to reverse the suspension. "As a child- focused organisation, we are particularly concerned for the close to 400,000 children we would have assisted this month through school-feeding and our ongoing development work," Wilfred Mlay, the vice-president for Africa for World Vision, said in a statement.

"We hold grave concerns for the 1.6 million orphans and vulnerable children across the country who will now not receive critical assistance." Mr Mugabe raised the stakes yesterday in the election, where the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, led by Morgan Tsvangirai, could topple him after 28 years in power. He told supporters at a rally that liberation war veterans had come to his office and asked him if they should take up arms to stop the MDC.

"It will never happen that this land which we fought for should be taken by the MDC so that they can give it back to our former oppressors, the whites," he was quoted as saying in the state-controlled press.

On the same day, the vice- president, Joseph Msika, told villagers in the south-western town of Zaka that a vote for the MDC would mean "voting for war".

Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, called for an end to "violence and repression" in Zimbabwe yesterday in a meeting with the United Nations secretary-general, Ban Ki-Moon.

More than 50 people had been killed, with 2,000 arrests in the country, he said. He called for UN agencies and election workers to be allowed to work there.

Opposition officials were desperately trying to locate MDC secretary general Tendai Biti, who has not been seen since he was bundled into a car at the Harare International Airport on Thursday, saying they feared for his safety.

Meanwhile, police published a list of seven more MDC MPs they say they want to question on allegations of "public violence".

Seven years of food shortages and record inflation have left many Zimbabweans bitterly joking they're surviving on 0-0-1: no meal in the morning, none at midday and just one in the evening.

FACT BOX

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party lost both presidential and parliamentary elections on 29 March. However, opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change did not win enough votes for an outright victory, forcing a second presidential round on 27 June.

The MDC blames Mugabe for Zimbabwe's economic collapse. Inflation is at least 165,000 per cent and unemployment 80 per cent, with chronic food and fuel shortages. ZANU-PF has deployed security forces, war veterans and youth militia in a campaign of violence to cripple Mr Tsvangirai's chances, it is claimed. Police have detained Mr Tsvangirai four times and arrested hundreds of activists, union leaders and journalists. Mr Tsvangirai claims 66 of his supporters have been murdered.

Where are the Edinburgh University Students Union socialists who supported Mugabe's nomination for an honourary degree?

In hiding now then, eh?

My guess is some of them went on to nice middle class lifestyles.

Some of them could be living in Morningside by now while Zimbabweans starve.

Like ex-marxist John Reid and Brian Wilson I'm sure there little flirt with socialism is just a distant memory!

Theory: . Mugabe and the generals are trying to make the situation so bad that the UN has to step in and take over the country.

Reason: They know they are on their way out but if they resign or are voted out, they will be pursued by their successors to get back the money they have stolen.

If the UN steps in they will be able to retire and sit back whining about white people re-colonising their country but will be able to keep all their stolen farms and loot.

Good point, Mr(s) Smith! Remember, socialists are phonies, when things the results of their 'theories' of land redistribution and socialism fall apart, they disappear into the sewers like the vermin they are!

A quite bizarre situation-how will it end? South Africa wont intervene nor will the AU. No Western nation dare intervene so its left for one of two scenarios-the country simply grinds to a halt with no currency and no food to feed its people ie total collapse with Mugabe and co finally abandoning ship for Libya or Malaysia or whatever country will accept this vermin. The second possibility is a coup-this could do with some covert help from'outsiders'-I think a coup executed correctly would see the quick collapse of Mugabes support which in reality is minimal. The election will not produce a win for Tsvangarai as Mugabe wont let it. Sadtimes for a beautiful country.

yes! clearly Browns pressure is nothing more than hot air, however what exactly is China doing for Zimbabwe?
ah yes! non interference! we will just sell him weapons
to keep him in power, while you appear to create the impression you oppose the likes of Mugabe you are critical of anyone who genuinely criticise him !(the caucasian race in particular)your criticism of politicians in the west and your lack of it for Chinese interference speaks volumes.
It will be the Western Nations and America in particular that in the end will help return Zimbabwe to normality it won`t be China or Africa.

People in Europe cant comprehend what is happening in Zimbabwe, but I can. Black governments are useless, and that is the bottom line.
Colonialism wasnt good for Africa, but it cannot be used to explain continued African failure throughout the continent, at some point some leader somewhere along with his or her fellow politicians will need to stand up and utter the truth by saying listen folks, just as white men cant jump, black societies cant progress.
If you lived in South Africa you would encounter what we call the "MINI BUS TAXI INDUSTRY". This is our nations only BEE (Black Economically Empowered) industry and it is in tatters. These taxi's transport passengers in the most dilapidated vehicles, there is no safety regulations, no driver testing standards, no maintenance programmes, no customer service support structure, no respect for the passengers, no respect for the rules of the road and no inclination about the importance of safety when it comes to transporting members of the public. Every morning they drive on pavements and pedestrians mustdive for cover, every morning a pedestrian is killed by a taxi (EVERY MORNING)They stop in the middle of very busy intersections open the doors and let passengers out, thus other motorists are stranded in the middle of the road and chaos prevails quite quickly. Mini bus taxi travle down the wrong side of the road facing the oncomming traffic because they cant be bothered to wait in the que. If you are travelling up the road on the correct side and they are travelling toward you, then you best move because they will hit you, or if you protest maybe shoot you or at least assault you. If your a passenger, you best not complain or you will be killed, if you are an oposition taxi company you will be burnt alive in the street.
PEOPLE, this is how Africa operates at every level, you need to live Africa to completely understand these people. There is no common sense and no forethougt, chaos is their friend!

Sure there are many of the masses who wish it was different, but unfortunately those people seem unable to force change from within their communities, thus continued failure is expected.
Mugabe is a simple African fool who is supported by other African fools like Mbeki, who incidently lived in exile for 25 years and begged the world to force regime change in SA! HAHAHA, NOW he is protecting Mugabe as he slaughters millions on the basis that they are BLACK LIBERATION BROTHERS! Funny how the race who call each other sister and brother kill, murder and starve each other, whereas the race who dont call each other sister and brother build futures for their kids and fellow neighbours in respectable and stable societies.

I hear you, but what can they do?
If they remove Mugabe an army chief takes over! OR they can remove him and spend billions waiting for the effects of a new regime to make a positive change only to leave and have the whole thing happening all over again.

Personally I would do the following; I would look to the international community and suggest that every time a Mugabe arrives on the African scene, the REST of Africa will be sanctioned. Every time there is a civil war, the REST of Africa will be sanctioned. Every time a leader refused to embrace democracy, the REST of Africa will be sanctioned.
Let Africa fix Africa and let us force them to fix Africa.

The definition of dumb must be doing the same old stupid thing time after time with no apparent resolution of the problem. A refusal to acknowledge the nature of the problem and an unwillingness to apply a solution. This has been Africa for some time. Western nations pump in aid and observers and the situation deteriorates! Wrong solution! Trying to solve the problem of "no resources" when the problem really is people at the top being greedy for political/tribal power and money. Expecting the rest of Africa to solve this problem is equally in vain because most of these countries are at it as well in greater or lesser measure. I like #16's solution which starts to get some leverage on the situation. But otherwise politics in Africa just has to grow up and get out of its Middle Ages attitude, or you can pour in endless money and watch as the carnage grows and an unsustainable population builds up in desperate need of even more food and money.

If the West really gave a damn it would shut downall the dodgy accounts in Zurich and elsewhere and it would take every opportunity to charge these people every time they came to the West. But since the social elite of the West are just as adept at murdering their populations when it suits, remember the terrorist bombs in Italy planted by their own government to drive people away from communism, they are hardly likely to do anything especially when their own dodgy financial dealings would also then come under the spotlight. The more we see the more it seems the Bilderbeck group that meets every now and again does actually control the world, look at the response to the Irish daring to vote against them, maybe we should be looking to them to sort themselves out first but what are the chances of that. Wasn't there a Dr Bilderbeck in the original "War of the Worlds"? Maybe it is about time the real rulers of the planet got off the fence and admitted defeat because down this road with oil soaring unstoppably, economies heading for the cliffs and God forbid plastic rubbish tossing up on their private beaches even they must see the writing on the wall for them because the rest of us certainly do. The day the fish head stops rotting and destroying the rest of us is the day a 12 or 13 year old child in Africa will be allowed to grow up and make his or her continent a decent place to live. But the guilty men don't sit in Harare or Pretoria or Bulawayo, they sit an awful lot closer to us than that and just as the Nazi officers in charge of the death camps used to have a normal family life every evening and weekend while on their killing spree these people walk amongst us every day with their smiles as their real work of destroying people's hopes and dreams simply because they don't happen to agree with theirs goes on. We hung these people at Nuremberg and we should do so again. We know their names and we see them every day on our TV screens and almost every single one is White

We know their names and we see them every day on our TV screens and almost every single one is White. We'll never stop the fish rotting by nibbling the fins we have to cure it by cutting the head off. Every "right" we have today was only gained by people, quite literally, chopping the heads of these same families off and it is surely long past time we had another cull of these "top" people, they have outlived their usefulness and simply block progress for the rest of us, ..... as they historically always have done of course. Common land enclosed and never handed back, sound familiar? Of course it was all a long time ago they say and it would be stealing now, but wasn't it stealing then? No, until we in the West grow up and stop blaming whinging "blecks" for their troubles and start looking inward to the thefts we allow to stand how on earth can we redress the balance over there? What was it someone said? "First remove the beam of wood from your own eye before criticising him who has a sliver in his", ...... maybe looked at in this light Mugabe and Imbeki and Zuma aren't quite the monsters we think they are, or should I say are told they are. llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

#10 Oder China will sell weapons to whoever wants to buy them. At least it is not alienating natonal leaders, which is more than can be said for the west.
I am only critical of caucasians that think Mugabe and Zimbabwe should be changed by further interference from the west, and funilly enough, only caucasians seem to be saying that. But next time that Indian fellow calls for an invasion of a sovreign country, I'll be sure to kick his butter too.
The reason I don't criticise "Chinese interference" is because there isn't any, well, there has been some unfortunate decisions in Zambia but I believe they have been sorted. So it's pretty hard to criticise something that does not exist.
The west will not end anything in Zimbabwe because they're shaking in their shoes that the rest of africa might give them a dirty look and some of the muslims they pay to live off their social welfare and rape their women might have a hissy fit.
I think Mugabe is a criminal who would be executed by his following leader. I am only sorry that he can only be executed once.

Funny how you see the British government as useless when the fact is that people in Britain have access to a good infrastructure, a good national health service by comparison to other countries, good roads, good quality of life, jobs, good hotels, shops, night life, wonderful cities, historical tours, galleries and a first world existence. President Mbeki has basically endorsed Mugabe and his murderous regime. He has tried to cover up his support for murder by saying he using the quiet diplomacy approach, but we all know that quiet diplomacy cannot be employed when one is faced with the humanitarian crisis being experienced in Zimbabwe.
Mbeki is doing nothing, so why should Britain?
I said it before, Africa must help Africa. Mbeki and the other countries bordering Zimbabwe should have gone into Zimbabwe and arrested Mugabe, but they wont because they will always support their LIBERATION STRUGGLE BROTHERS, even though they are murdering scum.

Britain sold nobody out! In this life you go out there and you work hard to progress, thats how it works. It is the same with nations, hence why European ships found Africa prior to African's finding Europe, even back then they were behind. You keep mentioning oil and suggesting Britain would be there if there was oil. SO WHAT? Since when did we humans suddenly change our natural approach to everything? You get nothing for nothing and oil is important, so if there is no oil there is no help, simple!
How about the fact that South Africa has sold the people of Zimbabwe out? How about asking why it is that Mbeki after25 years of exile in which he called for regime change in SA can now support Mugabe and his murdering generals?
You want to blame Britain because facing the truth about useless Africans is too much to handle.

f it wasn't for the fact that you awareness of repression in China is nonexistent you would be so funny.
The Chinese government only seems to do anything on the international stage these days for 1 of 2 reasons.
1. To p*ss about with the Western countries.
2. To get something out of the Western countries.
Anyone who goes against what the Chinese Government wants gets hammered. Can you say 'TIBET', 'Tiananmen Square'??
You suffer from what is known as Middle Kingdom Syndrome.

As far as Zimbabwe is concerned my personal belief is that after WW2 Britain pulled out from the colonies too quickly. The countries civil service and institutions were not set up properly and allowed time to bed in before we handed back control.
Unfortunately in Africa tribal warfare always seems to be bubbling under the surface. Only a handful of those countries seem to work.

The West is too feeble to intervene and, frankkly, could not give a damn. There own vested interests are not threatened. Possibly the Chinese are keeping Mugabe afloat as well as some western banks. Someone is making money out of the misery that is Zimbabwe.

Just look at his (Mugabe's)picture above and you will see how visibly he has aged in the last few weeks.

However, another despot will probably take his place when he departs and so the saga will continue.

Mugabe and his grizly gang make the former apartheid regime look like kindergarten children.

Where are the bleeding heart liberals now?

Evil is not confined only to Africa but just think of Tibbet, Burma, the Canadian Indians - immense psychological harm was done to some of them by trying to take the Indian out of the aboriginal people.

Africa is not yet ready for Democracy! Remember that since the time of its invention by Pericles of Athens circa 400BC we, in the west, nearly lost it on a number of occassions over the last 2,000 years or so!

Black Africans never even evolved a writen language, the European settlers gave them this essential foundation of a civilized society.

South Africa will eventually go the same way as Zimbabwe. Its descent will take longer due to more whites being involved in the administration there but finally, it will descend into chaos!

The posts of Marchino Cherry from China are indeed provide a humourous interlude. He is a veritable first class stand up comedian. His English usage reinforces his humour, I am sure that this is intentional.

Whether the west intervenes or not is another issue, the real issue here is that Africa is a useless continent governed by idiots.
Has anything useful ever been invented on this continent? Has any African nation ever offered us anything innovative? Has any African ever contributed anything of value to the world?
Science, biology, mathematics, engineering. Has Africa ever excelled at any?
Was Africa modern when the ships arrived, or was she primitive?
Is Africa modern by today's standards or is she still primitive?
The West may intervene, the West may not intervene, but whatever happens Africa will still be a waste of space.
