Published Date: 20 July 2008
GORDON Brown last night called on British troops in Basra to bring the UK's work in Iraq to a conclusion on an unannounced visit to the south.
In a speech to soldiers in blistering heat, the Prime Minister held out the prospect of an end to British involvement in the country five and a half years after the invasion.

His comments came at the end of a lightning visit during which he assessed the prospects for the drawdown of troops with military and Iraqi leaders.

Brown refused to set an "artificial timetable" for troop withdrawals after talks in Baghdad with Iraqi prime minister Nouri Maliki and president Jalal Talabani.

He insisted dramatic progress had been made since his last visit in December, with violent incidents in the Basra area down from six a day to one every six days.

Speaking at Basra Air Station, Brown told the troops: "You are now working with the Iraqi forces to train them up so that they can take over their responsibilities, so that we can complete our work here to bring Basra to democracy, security and prosperity."

He went on to praise the professionalism, dedication and courage of the 4,000-strong British force in Iraq. and said they would make a huge difference.

As Brown arrived in Iraq, US presidential hopeful Barack Obama was beginning a visit to Afghanistan at the start of a trip to the Middle East and Europe. The tour is aimed at helping him bolster his foreign policy and national security credentials in the race for the White House.

The Illinois senator arrived in Kabul as part of an official congressional delegation to meet top military leaders and troops at Bagram Air Base, the main US military base.

Underscoring the challenges in Afghanistan, authorities yesterday reported a Nato soldier and four policemen killed by separate roadside bombs in areas where Taliban-led insurgency is intensifying.

I'll raise a glass to The Scottish Executive, golf balls and a round of 18 in the lowlands. Brown inherited Iraq just like Obama will.

It is hot and sandy, and the course owner is saying "16 holes are open today, next month only 15 so on and so on. Tee off and have a good game gentlemen. Start early in the morning before the heat becomes unbearable."

Blair became catholic.
Bush will retire on a ranch in Crawford, TX.
A ranch it is said raises no livestock.

Finish up this Iraqi business.
What happens to a jar of golf balls, pebbles, sand at 120deg heat?

Add water and you have cement

Due to the venomous nature of one of the candidates, I have just done a risk assessment on the announcement of the Glasgow East by-election.

When John Mason is announced as MP for the constituency he will have to wear double hearing protection, full body armour, face shield and a Formula 1 crash helmet.
Safety boots are recommended but not essential.

If John Mason was an employee it would be illegal for any employer to force him to attend the count. It would not be worth the risk!!

Children should not attend the count, with a minimum age of 25 recommended to avoid serious brain damage.

To make the count safe for everyone, Maggie Curran should not be allowed to attend, and should be held in a hermetically sealed room, preferably on Rannoch Moor.

Think Safety!

JTP, I don't want to seem critical - but you've only covered about 1% of his various follies, still, like most of us you're probably too busy working to raise taxes for 'Gunner' Gordon Brown's vast array of squanderings - including of course an illegal war!

Hopefully, 'scunner gunner' Gordon will get his come-uppance when the Glasgow East results are announced.

10 Citylocal Fife,

You're right, I have only covered 1% of New Labour Sleaze. I'll dig out the other 99% when I get a chance!

It can't be long before the Sleaze Party go bankrupt.
The good news about that is that all the members are liable for the millions of debts!

Is David Marshall's hoose in his name????

If Iraq is such a raging success, why does the prime minister have to be smuggled in then back out again in the dead of night?

He looks really happy with his machine gun. Why not just issue him with a grey suit replacement in the shape of a uniform and tell him to get on with it. Two major benefits - he'll realise what it's really like, and we can get on with repairing his damage.

Gordon Brown the man with the moral compass.

Tip tip, boys come away with you now. I call upon you all to bring this glorious struggle to a conclusion. Yes we have been winning, all of these six long years. Tip tip, hooray. Very well done.

What a pathetic show. This amounts to nothing more than a photo-opp for a fat f*rt weilding a machine gun with a moronic smile.

It's an insult to the troops.

Finish the job?

Bloody right. Vote this eejit out of office.

This is a shameful picture, how can the man be smiling? Clearly, he has no idea of what each and every one of our personnel in Iraq OR Afghanistan, are going through. Particularly on the day we received news of a suicide by a British Hostage! This is akin to the ridiculous Bush photo op on an aircraft carrier saying "Mission Accomplished". At the time, most people didn't know he was actually referring to his "real" mission, which was to create turmoil in the World
