EDINBURGH Airport has been officially crowned as Scotland's busiest, according to new passenger figures released today.
The Capital has beaten its west coast rival after seeing just over nine million passengers through its doors in 2007 – 300,000 more than Glasgow.

The airport has been ahead of Glasgow for passenger numbers since August, but latest figures show Edi
nburgh has come out top for the whole of 2007, with nearly 25,000 passengers a day.

The figures come the day after the Government announced that improvements to the airport was on its list of national planning priorities.

Amsterdam proved the most popular international destination of the year followed by the likes of Dublin, Paris, Frankfurt and New York.

Over the course of last year, 29 new international services were introduced at Edinburgh.

A further 14 new services are due to take off in 2008, including new flights to the US, France, Germany, Greece and Croatia.

More routes are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, including some from budget airline Ryanair, and airport operator BAA today said they expect 2008 to be just as busy.

David Johnston, the airport's managing director, said: "It has been a fantastic year for Edinburgh Airport and 2008 is already bringing exciting new developments such as Ryanair's expansion out of the Scottish Capital.

"We will also get our first-ever route to New York JFK with Delta Air Lines, which is also once again operating its Atlanta service.

"This year will also see BAA's biggest-ever capital investment programme at Edinburgh Airport, with £45 million earmarked for a series of major projects."

The figures show that Edinburgh handled 622,367 passengers in December, with international traffic up by 25.3 per cent.

The airport's multi-million investment programme will see the departure lounge double in size, with new shops, restaurants and bars being built.

Resurfacing of the airport's runway also forms part of the programme works to be carried out this year.

The improvements will be part of the first steps towards a £1 billion expansion.

City leader Jenny Dawe said: "That Edinburgh airport has been the busiest in Scotland for the whole year shows that Edinburgh is recognised nationally and internationally as a fantastic place to live, visit and do business."

Frankfurt Hahn – Ryanair
Bremen – Ryanair
Pisa – Ryanair

#5... I thought it a bit 'kinder'..never mind Missy Jean will be along shortly. :-)
btw.. Edinburgh Airport's figures are all the more remarkable given BAA have apparently 'calmed' it in respect of large aircraft.

I wonder why “Amsterdam proved the most popular international destination of the year followed by the likes of Paris and Frankfurt” - These are the 3 biggest hub airports to allow you to get to decant destinations.. Well done EN for missing that.... roll on more direct flights from Edinburgh

#7 and #8.. BAA have not encouraged holiday flight airlines to base @ Edinburgh
plus the facilities they require for large aircraft are not available on a regular basis. Amsterdam is popular due the number of worldwide flight connections this quote from BAA's Donal Dowds:

"Mr Dowds said several million Edinburgh passengers a year were
travelling to long-haul destinations via other airports when they could
be served by direct routes."
http://news.scotsman.com/edinburgh.cfm?id=551632005
Seems Emirate's direct flight at Glasgow is also coming under BAA protection along with long haul leisure flights. Just imagine how much Glasgow 'ground' would be lost if Edinburgh offered the same destinations? Canadian flights likewise. BAA might be doing a good job on the European short haul markets but their efforts on long haul need to be investigated. Just remember they get your money irrespective of which
central belt airport you fly from.

#13 - Edinburgh Airport Rail Link still going ahead - a cheaper surface option which will still offer cross-Scotland connections. And yes, Glasgow gets its shuttle to Paisley and Central too.

Compared to 2006, EDI has experienced an average passenger increase of 35,875 per calendar month.
Time that local elected representatives were exerting greater pressure on the SE for vastly improved road access. As the principal beneficiary of improved access would be BAA / Grupo Ferrovial, that organisation should be 'encouraged' to make a substantial economic contribution to improved road access.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. The access road is poorly engineered and aesthetically poor. Many of my business associates are appalled by this first impression of the capital city.
Another major headache that needs to be addressed is the layout of taxyways and the provision of aircraft stands. My inbound flights are now regularly held short of the apron area until a parking stand becomes available. This may (or may not) be acceptable to those who sit rearwards of the curtain but is certainly not acceptable to the bulk of business passengers known to me on the basis that businesses are not developed by sitting idly in an aeroplane which is delayed by poor infrastructure at the airport. Instead of grandeoise Master Plans for 2030, BAA needs to get the here and now sorted out.
I understand that the access road was once a narrow rural road with agricultural smallholdings located on either side. As far as I can see, the road is now largely given over to enterprises that are closely associated with the airport. So yes, a contribution from the airport operator and its associated businesses should be robustly sought. The bulk of financing should, however, come from central funds in my view.

You are hitting nail in the head. Road is not good for so many passenger. I demand my secretary in Scotland always meet me at aeroplane and she get great anger because of road and parking policemens who always trying to chase away saying cannot park here. She carries passport for ID and family photographings, When parking policeman see who father is they say is OK to park.
Airport road is not good for businessmans who bring jobs to Scotland. I also taking much time in British Airways flight who cannot park until other aeroplane is leaving for runway. Makes me angry. Gives Scottish secretary much anger. City ruler needs to get problem fixed. Other airports much better.

#22, BAA probably charges operators too much. It's been the same at Glasgow, although changing a bit now.
26

Joe,

Bishopbriggs 10/01/2008 11:51:42
BAA have always charged airlines less at Glasgow, perhaps Edinburgh is becoming more popular now the charges are equalising?
