FED-UP Britons spend more than a day each year on hold on the telephone, according to new research.
The average caller will be left hanging on for two hours and five minutes each month – 25 hours each year – before eventually getting through to an operator.

Half of those asked have waited for long periods only to get cut off once they finally got through to someone.

The poll of 2,500 people, by the online retailer CartridgeMonkey.com, found individuals give it three minutes before they start losing their temper.

The poll also revealed that Britons will wait on hold for an average of 15 minutes before getting fed up and putting the phone down.

Some companies are worse than others. In one particular case (Scottish Gas) I have written to them telling them that I WILL NOT phone them unless I am given a direct number that is essentially a phone on someone's desk.

I've said that they are perfectly at liberty to call me or to conduct business via letters but I will under no circumstances put up with their public phone system.

Maybe if more people were to do this, the companies concerned might just get the message.

My latest bill from Talk Talk has the following charges
Non-direct debit £2.50
Late payment £7.50
The late payment charge will be credited if a direct debit is arranged!!
How dare they. I paid my bill at the post office and deducted the £7.50. Just waiting for their call now. Then I'll find out how Trading Standards operate.
