INDEPENDENT Lothians MSP Margo MacDonald has told the Scottish Parliament she wants the right to end her own life.
Ms MacDonald, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, said she should be allowed to bring about her own death if her condition deteriorated to a point where life was unbearable.

Her comments came during a debate on choices for patients coming to the end of a terminal illness – including the possibility of legal support for assisting them to die.

"As you know I have a degenerative condition," Ms MacDonald told fellow MSPs. "And I would like to have the right to determine by how much my capacity to fulfil my social function, my familial functions, my personal functions is going to be truncated.

"And I would like to have the ability to take that decision. I don't want to burden any doctor. I don't want to burden any friend or family member. I want to find a way in which I can take the decision to end my life in case I'm unlucky enough to have the worst form of Parkinson's near the end of life."

She said doctors admitted palliative care was not always as effective as everyone would want.

"I'm mindful of that and I might be unlucky," she added. "I apologise for being personal in this, but it's not a theory with me."

To brand it "illegal" for someone to "force themselves to die" was to deny the bravery of "countless soldiers" throughout the ages, she added.

"People have made that decision for one reason or another," she said. "It is just that we're now accepting that its possible to make that decision when you are in sound mind and it can be taken in a measured capacity."

Ms MacDonald added: "I am mindful of what the doctors say and how difficult it is for them.

"However, I have read the personal testimony of doctors and have seen doctors who have admitted in court to assisting a suicide. They are no less doctors in my estimation."

Ms MacDonald was speaking in a members' debate called by Liberal Democrat MSP Jeremy Purvis.

He restated his view that the law should be changed to allow terminally ill people to be allowed to ask for assistance to die. He said: "The time is right for the Parliament to be able to hold a full and open inquiry into choices that people can and should be able to make at the end of a terminal illness."

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said at this stage the government had no plans to change the law.

People should not have to leave their family, friends and home and go abroad to die....its about time we gave this due care and consideration...we are supposed to be adults and yet we condemn people to painful, slow and degrading deaths, causing them and their families terrible suffering...

Good luck to Margo..

Don't talk about it, just do it !

totally agree. Planet is over-populated, NHS over stretched, courts over stretched and yet people who are living in constant pain can be prosecuted for wishing to shorten the pain.

We all die why should the timing be so important.

The body belongs to the individual not the state. Again the ugly head of religion has alot to so with suicide is a crime.

Carefull regulation to prevent people abusing system but I would rather drift off than fall to bits.

Good on you Margo......
Its the individual's choice not to be subjected to bed baths, incontinence appliances, embarrassment and retaining personal dignity.

I for one, would like the choice to decide on whether the quality of life has deterioated to a level that affects my dignity and mental wellbeing.

Margo can sometimes 'rabbit on' about political issues but give her the recognition in highlighting the issue of euthanasia. We dsont need a team of social workers or a long winded cross party enquiry..........common sense is the starting point.

Spot on Margo. Chances are some of us posters on this thread will have to face the same decision - it would be nice if we were able to make that choice legitimately, without any suspicion falling on others close to us, and end things with dignity.

Good luck Margo. A dog or a cat gets put down when a particular point in it's life becomes unbearable. "It's to stop suffering"

Shouldn't be any different for people.

QVC shares will plummet when Ms McDonald go's!

You may not always agree on politics but as another human I have utmost sympathy for the journey she faces, what a choice to be faced with. I totally agree with her; my mum died from lung cancer and she begged me to end her suffering but I was too afraid of the consequences. It will always be my biggest regret that I put myself first. Margo, be strong.

Nobody is stopping margo from ending her own life........But asking others to kill her is and should remain illegal.

#14 Why should assisted suicide remain illegal?

What is Margo to do if she reaches a point where she wants to end it, but is unable to do so without help?
16

Helen,

I cannot agree with her. We have some of the best palliative care in the world and we should be pouring more money into researching and improving what we have to offer. No-one has the right to play God.

I have disagreed publicly with Margo on a lot of subjects, and still do, and to be frank I don't like her.
But I salute her personal commitment and her stance on a issue which has affected her and will continue to affect her so devastatingly. My father died from a form of Parkinson's and I would have put the pillow over his face myself if the law had allowed.
I hope that some form of relief and respite is found for all sufferers, including Margo.

Helen at # 16. If no-one has the right to play God, then why should we be pouring money into researching and improving palliative care?

Assisted suicide is no more 'playing God' than keeping someone alive on life support is 'playing God'.

Leave God out of it! Why not accept that some things are and should be a matter of personal choice?

Calum at #17... a pillow? Could you not think of something kinder?
