CAMPAIGNERS against animal cruelty have welcomed a pet-owning ban for a man who starved a German shepherd dog until it was a day from death.
James Burns of Dundee, who admitted causing "unnecessary suffering" to the three-year-old animal, was disqualified under the Animal Welfare Scotland Act from owning or keeping any animal for five years.

The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it was one of the worst cases of animal cruelty its inspectors had ever seen.

A spokeswoman, Doreen Graham, said the dog, which Burns called Akasha but which was renamed Willow by animal welfare officers, had been deliberately starved.

Burns's solicitor said stress and family worries had led his client to neglect the dog.

You have a problem with dogs now, Chuckles?? Our pets and all animals are as worthy of being treated properly as all humans are. Don't be a species-ist!

And the guy should be banned from owning any animal for life!

Personally, I'd brand scum like that. We should all know who they are and what they've done to poor defenceless beasts!

Doesn't go anywhere near far enough. This bloke should be branded, castrated and made to do 500 hours community service licking up dog sh*t from the pavements.

The dog is absolutely beautiful, how anybody could treat any animal like that is beyond me.

NO BW,NO Problems with 'Dugs' infact both DYW and I have had rescued Dogs from the dog home, sadly one was very old and died, but we gave him 'Quality Life' in his last two years, that we got him/had him.

Its not practical for us to have a dog now, where we live and would be unfair to any dog to leave them in the hoose all day.

AD @#4, (watched the clipp, agree)

This Story though, should of been in the 'headline news'

And further to your, 'ranty panty, BW, did you not see my posts on the Children's Sick Kids, 'Therapy Dogs' to-which, the 'Muppet's' said were dirty!,?

( I defended our Dogs, with all my vigour)

"Problem With Dogs" BW,?

It is obvious to me that James Burns has mental issues. What good is a mere five year ban on owning a pet going to accomplish?

Mr Linskail: you really annoy me! You seem to like to hear yourself talk or should I say "see" yourself talk because everytime I read this rag your comments appear en masse! Do you live to do this?

I urge people to read "Pet Hates - The Shocking truth about Pets and Vets" by Josh Lawton, ISBN 1902831489, to gain a broad perspective on cruelty to pets. As a vet of many years experience, Josh Lawton points out some horrifying home truths:
(1) Many people keep far more pets than they can cope with. This is especially true of cats, which are territorial and fight when held in confined spaces. Right now many people keep 3 or more cats under insanitary conditions, infested with parasites, suffering from other diseases, and without hygienic arrangements for defecation. Much the same is true of dogs. There should be a pet limit of two cats or dogs per address inside municipal boundaries, with NO exceptions. Excess pets should be removed and put to sleep.
(2) People know almost nothing about the needs of the animals they own, e.g. dogs get fed the most appalling rubbish, which causes them all sorts of problems. Yet there are few courses for people to learn how to look after their pets properly.
(3) People keep animals under inappropriate conditions. Josh Lawton quotes the case of long-haired dogs that are bred for cold climates being kept indoors all winter. Result: the animals literally cook slowly to death in their owners centrally heated houses. Pets such as Afghan hounds should be kept outdoors for their own health, and if owners are worried about loneliness they should have two dogs, but no more.
(4) People keep animals that have been bred for extreme, unhealthy characteristics. We wouldn't deliberately breed people to be achondroplastic dwarfs, for example - but we do it to dachshunds, not caring about their arthritic joints because we as humans enjoy their "cuteness". Many other dog breeds have extreme health problems. Crufts, the Kennel Club etc. are exceptionally cruel to encourage such breeds. Josh Lawton states many specific examples.

Josh's book forces one to conclude that the British may be animal lovers, but in being so, are ironically inflicti
