'Cruel' owner given five-year pet ban
CAMPAIGNERS against animal cruelty have welcomed a pet-owning ban for a man who starved a German shepherd dog until it was a day from death.
James Burns of Dundee, who admitted causing "unnecessary suffering" to the three-year-old animal, was disqualified under the Animal Welfare Scotland Act from owning or keeping any animal for five years.
The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it was one of the worst cases of animal cruelty its inspectors had ever seen.
A spokeswoman, Doreen Graham, said the dog, which Burns called Akasha but which was renamed Willow by animal welfare officers, had been deliberately starved.
Burns's solicitor said stress and family worries had led his client to neglect the dog.
