Published Date: 13 December 2006
CAMPAIGNERS are joining forces to make recent cutbacks in bus services a key issue at next year's local elections.
Throughout 2006, the frequency of some less popular bus routes has been slashed - sparking anger in a number of communities.

Most of the services are used mainly by pensioners, and were previously subsidised by the city council. Lothian Buses str
uggles to manage the routes on a commercial basis because there are not enough paying passengers.

However, residents are furious and are pressing the bus operator, the city council and the Scottish Executive to help return services to previous levels. At least five petitions have already been organised across the city, and various groups are now uniting under the banner "Bring Back Our Buses".

They want candidates at next year's local and parliamentary elections to pledge to back their campaign.

Long-standing community campaigner Tina Woolnough, who has been fighting against cutbacks in her role as chairwoman of the Blackhall Community Association, is spearheading the protest. She said: "We are e-mailing community councils and groups, asking that they sign our e-petition, which has been lodged with the Scottish Parliament.

"We believe that the bus route development fund provided by the Scottish Executive is far too restrictive and our petition calls for more funding for bus services. We are also jointly asking Lothian Buses and the city council why less profitable sections of routes and entire routes are being axed now, contrary to environmental, transport and social inclusion policies.

"Edinburgh residents feel very loyal to Lothian Buses because it is council-owned and because we perceived that they provided a public service, rather than operating as a hard-nosed, profit-driven company. What is the advantage of a council-owned bus company if the service element is removed? We will be calling on all candidates in 2007 to make this an election issue."

So far this year, the number 13 route through Blackhall has been curtailed, while the frequency of the number 18 from the Gyle to the Royal Infirmary and the 38 from north Edinburgh to the ERI has been reduced. The route of the 67 service between Ratho and Wester Hailes has been axed; in west Edinburgh, the 20 has been withdrawn at peak periods and a similar fate has befallen the 60 from Dumbiedykes.

Thousands of people have signed petitions, but this pressure has so far failed to save the bus services. Pensioner Irene Paterson, neighbourhood watch co-ordinator for Hunter's Tryst, persuaded 3500 people to support her petition against the number 18 cutbacks. She has pledged to join the Bring Back Our Buses campaign.

"Council tax payers should have some say in our supposedly excellent public transport," she said.

She said: "There are a large number of pensioners who use the number 18, so why are we being ignored? We need a 20-minute daily service to the hospital."

Community councils in Fairmilehead and Sighthill and residents' associations in Dumbiedykes will be among those likely to be involved in the campaign.

Lib Dems in south Edinburgh are already fighting the cutbacks to the number 38 service, and Newington councillor Fred Mackintosh has welcomed the new initiative.

Lib Dem MSP Margaret Smith has also pledged to sign the e-petition. Tory Colinton councillor Jason Rust is fighting for more subsidy for the number 18 bus, while the SNP has pledged £4 million a year for Edinburgh's buses if it forms the next Executive.

Council leader Ewan Aitken has said both the Lib Dems and the Tories did not promise extra cash to subsidise buses in their 2006 council budgets.

"When I became leader [in the summer], I made a commitment to ensure an additional £1m is found for supported buses, and that will be in our manifesto next year," the Labour chief said.

Ian Craig, managing director of Lothian Buses, said: "We aim to provide as comprehensive a service as we can, and that means we use some of the profits we earn on the busier routes to subsidise losses made on the quieter routes, and at the quieter times such as evenings and Sundays.

"However Lothian Buses receive no council subsidies to run these loss-making buses so we can only afford cross-subsidise up to a certain level. There is not a bottomless pit of money available for loss making bus routes and we have to constantly monitor and adjust service levels to ensure we live within our means."

Use the car. I cant wait until the next bus strike is on. Driving in the city is wonderful, as everyone can use the full road, and there aren't thicko bus drivers trying to cut you up and stopping at bus stops with their arse still hanging onto the road blocking if for everyone . Pay peanuts.......

I think it is shocking that Lothian Buses cut back the service. The removed the No 12 bus from The Jewel to Portobello - it was a well used service. Pensioners are always the ones that have to suffer! As for Craig51's comment, not everyone has access to a car.

Diverting a tiny amount of the money earmarked for the trams folly into preserving, and in some cases enhancing, marginal bus services would contribute more to reducing city-wide car use and have greater social benefits than the tram ever will.

#1 - so you're one of the lucky sods who is able to drive. Your selfish attitude does grate somewhat with disabled people like myself, who will never be able to get a driving licence. I rely on buses, but am now suffering due to the withdrawal of late night and early morning 45s.

Time to shift out Dr. Beeching and bring in the Fat Controller, we might just then have a brilliant service.

How about expanding SPT to be Scotland wide?

BTW I've move to cycling instead of using the bus.

#5 The bus companies in Edinburgh are paid about 41p every time a passenger hops on a bus. Now isn't that more than a standard Adult with a ridacard who uses, on average, 3 buses or more a day?

The cooncil and government want to develop awa oot here in rural Edinburgh west but the boogers have never provided decent public transport!

Ask the guy sittin in the Airport Park and Ride - he thinks he has been posted awa oot to the outer extremities of the Edinburgh Empire as some kind of punishment ha! ha!

Bite-Back,

Why do they run so many night bus services nearly or completely devoid of passengers, why are they using another large wad of our tax money to introduce yet another night service, why have they spent money on the new taxi-bus service to the airport when they have already got the 100 service leaving from the town centre, because their a bunch of comedians thats why, Tina Woolnough, we have had enough, either bus use is rocketing or it is not, make up your minds, the best kind of propaganda is the truth and I cant help seeing what is before my eyes.

Sleepy Fergus,

Oddly enough the no 22 service that runs from the Scottish Exec is plentiful. I stand at night on Pronces Street waiting and waiting for the one bus that can get me home (thats if it turns up of course!) and watch as countless no 22s drive by, often one right behind another one. Its digraceful how unbalanced the bus system is in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has the best bus service in the country. Stop whinging about it! Even with the reductions, Edinburgh is still miles ahead.

Due to reasons beyond my control I had to move to the souless hellhole which is Milton Keynes. Buses do not run before 7:30am and all stop at 6pm. A 30 minute frequency is the best you can hope for, and there is virtually nothing on a Sunday.

13# I think we had one of the best bus services in the country, but it is everyones right to criticise the methods employed by these "private" companies when we are paying for the services they provide.
There are some issues that need to be looked at with this current system and I for one intend to look into it quite deeply, it is not whinging when the citizens of a city try and have their say about the running of it, I think it is called a democracy, you are one of these people who think that we should all just put up and shut up, you are obviously happy to live in a dictatorship, I am not.

You always here that argurment "I cant afford a car" Bullsh*t, lets take buses, £31pm = £372 py thats more than enough the insure it,tax and mot it, plus, you get to use it when you want how you want, no more crappy buses, drive straight to the shops come rain or shine. Yes with petrol on top its slightly more expensive than buses, but its worth every single extra penny.

Then take trains. A yearly train ticket from Livingstone to Haymarket is £1300 a year!!!!!!!! and for what, a service that is cramped, smells, is late and not realible.

I ask everyone to look at their earnings, work out how much you spend on public transport, and work out what it would cost to drive. You'd be surprised how little difference there is. A no, dont buy a car on hire purchase, buy a good small japanesse car which is realible and away you go.I have yet to find one bus route that is quicker than a car, and thats with all the greenways and other daft things the council throws my way.

craig has gone quiet,he has found a subject he knows nothing about been put in his place and gone to buy a buss pass hooray another bad motorist off the road

19

craig51,

edinburgh 13/12/2006 22:04:25

why buy a car on HP??? Buy a cheap second hand one. And if you really want to go down the HP route, you will find that most compnays offer free insurance for the first 3 years, and you dont need to get it mot'd for the first 3 years as cars dont need to be. That leaves tax, which is £100 per year if you buy a SMALL car, say a 1 litre, nothing flash, will use less fuel, and doesnt matter if you pile the miles on. So petrol and the cost of the car, and like i said, buy a cheap one for £6000, and i'm sure you can get a kia or a daewoo for much cheaper, even a nissan micra. So for £6000, thats £125 plus say £60 fuel. Minus the bus pass as you dont need that anymore and your NET £154 down. For that, you are free to go where you want, when you want. Journeys are much faster and a LOT more pleasant.

FYI #17, i dont park in bus stops, nor do I use bus lanes within operating hours., I find your insults petty and insulting. Bus drivers standards of driving in general are deplorable, and they seem to think that the old law of "please let me out, its the law" is still in force, and barge their way out nilly willy. Just stand on Ferry ROad and watch them. THats not saying there aren't stupid drivers as there are many of them, but bad driving is indemic within LRT.

20

craig51,

edinburgh 13/12/2006 22:07:55

#18 I used to do public transport, using to buses to work and two back. On average, it took 71 minutes, and that was just bus time, never mind walking to the bus stop or getting from bus stop to work and vice versa.

I got extreamly annoyed at buses being late, early, not operating when I needed them, bus drivers giving no more than a grunt, but worse than all that, was the neds and totallack of respect people seem to display to fellow passengers. Its just horrible, and as long as I can afford it, and i would give up a hell of as lot, and have, I will continue to drive in my nice wee metal box, when i want, where i want.

#22 Well said, Craig!
Edinburgh bus drivers are the most ignorant folk on the planet. Not only that , they are the folk who tolerate the Neds the most.
Edinburgh buses suck!

Percy Stent-Cuikie,

Edinburgh DOES have the best bus service in the UK. (Public Transport is a farking disgrace outside London).

Between the hours of 10:00am and 3:00pm Edinburgh buses are brilliant. I use them to visit my customers - far handier than taxis.

Otherwise, it sucks.

In the rush-hours I'd rather sit in my own car, listening to whatever I want on the In Car Entertainment, smoking fags, free from intrusion by noisy, ill-behaved, Merchant Company schoolchildren and morons who apparently live on a diet of garlic, garlic, and more garlic.

Matron, the screens!

25

craig51,

14/12/2006 09:18:28

who said i had £6k???? Read my post again. I said either buy a chaep 2nd hand car, or if you must go down the HP, HP being the keyword there, get a brand new car with MOT and insurance paid for you for £6K. Its not hard.

And I tried giving a good morning, but when you step on a bus after it being 10 mins late and you soaked, and the driver doesnt even make eye contact, screw them, not even an apology for being late! Disgusting buses are, and I hope to never have to use them again.

26

Mozam,

Edinburgh 14/12/2006 12:38:23

I'm with craig51.

Edinburgh bus drivers are a disgrace, i'm related to one!! and I've told them!! Its not the law to let a bus out, its a guidline in the highway code not a rule and should only be followed if safe to do so. 90% of bus drivers indicate and pull out anyway, leaving you no option but to slam on the brakes, sverve or pile into them.

I regulary use the 22 service to get to work and its pretty poor to say the least. They should stop advertising it as a 5 minute service as its clearly not and I regulary stand and watch full buses drive by my stop as they will not put double deckers on this route. If you are lucky enough to get on one then your cramped never get a seat and at the mercy of an sub-standard driver who has no idea what progressive breaking is and seems totaly oblivious to the people crammed on his bus.

I need a car for other reasons than going to work and I have to say role on the next strike too!! The roads almost a joy when there are no buses on them.

#27...the drivers should try and acknowldege their customers (who pay their wages in essance) you never usualy get eye contact never mind a morning or a thank you. They should thank us for using the service thats they way it usually goes!!!

One of the toughest jobs in the country!...oh how we laughed, sitting behind a stearing wheel driving a box about is hardly rocket science, not speaking to anyone and with their own lanes to drive along...come on!! I'm sure the nurses, teachers, emergency service workers would proably disagree too!!
