A MOVE by Labour rebels to help 1.1 million low-paid people who lost out from the scrapping of the 10p tax band and have not yet been compensated was dropped last night.
Faced with a Labour backlash in May, Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, announced an emergency £2.7 billion package to compensate the bulk of those left worse off by the ending of the 10p rate.

He faced a smaller revolt last night from back-benche
rs still not satisfied that the government had gone far enough. They were demanding compensation for the remaining 1.1 million.

But the leading rebel, David Taylor, a Leicestershire MP, decided not to put his amendment to a vote after the government insisted it was still working to compensate those households that lost out.

Challenged by former minister Frank Field, ringleader of the initial rebellion, Jane Kennedy, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, promised: "We will return to this issue at the Pre-Budget Report.

"The Chancellor will bring forward proposals; they will be concrete proposals. They will be implementable as soon as possible."

Mr Taylor acknowledged he was taking it on a "huge amount of trust and goodwill" that the government would act.

Earlier, Mr Field had warned of a possible censure motion in the autumn if ministers did not make good on their promises.

oh dear, I fear that delaying it until the pre-budget report will lose Glasgow East. and possibly a Prime Minister.

How will Darling find money to bail out low earners after this year or doesn't it matter anymore.....

As I understand it,a reinstatement of the 10p band would automatically refund the exact amount taken from each and every individual, despite the government trying to con us into beleiving this is not possible.Of course its possible. It existed up until April!PAYE is cumulative or it was last time I looked!
The problem is Labours tactics were probably to tax the lowest paid and offer a tax bribe to middle earners just prior to an election to try and save their own scrawny necks down south .
DUMP THIS SHOWER OF QUISLING LYING BASKETS NOW!They were party to a con for forty years and they are still doing it.They cannot win and you are off your trolley to think otherwise.

Does this country need any more convincing that its only future is away from this corruption of a union?
WTF does it take to convince people they are being shafted and f*ck over again and again and again until it sinks in?
It isnt referred to rip off Britain for nothing.

The Chancellor will bring forward proposals; they will be concrete proposals. They will be implementable as soon as possible

proposals, concrete, implementable asap. all very vague.
Cannot believe that the 'rebel' MPs accepted this.

the abolition of the 10p band was Labour saying to their working class voters; 'We take you for granted'.
