CHARLES Clarke, a former home secretary, issued a stark warning to Gordon Brown last night that Labour would not allow itself to be led to "utter destruction" at the next general election.
In an interview, Mr Clarke dismissed reports of a "Blairite plot" by supporters of the former prime minister, Tony Blair, to oust Mr Brown from No10.

But he said there was a "deep and widely shared concern" within the party – extending far beyond
Blairites – that the government was heading for disaster, coupled with a determination to prevent it happening.

"It is inaccurate and misleading to dismiss as some kind of Blairite rump those who fear that Labour's current course will lead to utter destruction at the next general election," he said.

"Similarly, there is no Blairite plot, despite rumours and persistent newspaper reports.

"There is, however, a deep and widely shared concern – which does not derive from ideology – that Labour is destined to disaster if we go on as we are, combined with a determination that we will not permit that to happen."

Mr Clarke sharply criticised the way Mr Brown's supporters have come to use the term "Blairite" to characterise anyone who questioned the direction of the government under his leadership.

It was, he said, the stock phrase used by the "Brown political briefing team" to "traduce" Foreign Secretary David Miliband's newspaper article last month in which he set out his vision for reviving Labour's fortunes.

"Like 'Thatcherite', the word is not used kindly. 'Blairite',even 'uber-Blairite', is a lazy and inaccurate shorthand. It is intended not to illuminate but to diminish, marginalise and insult," Mr Clarke said. "Moreover, this misleading language damages the vital need for Labour to move on to new, post-Blair ground."

His comments are likely to re-ignite speculation at Westminster of a possible leadership challenge to Mr Brown when MPs return in October following the summer break.

The labour party miss opportunities for renewal at the last election. Many old MP's are going tolose their seats regardless of who's in charge because they have been their for sooooo long.

Is Mr Clarke talking about the labour party as national body or these older MP's? There is a difference.

I always welcome hearing from Clarke, his fantastic record at the home office make his views worthwhile...

Or alternatively, Labour deserve destruction due to their utter incompetence. Clarke is a joke, and Brown is worse. I don't think the country can take much more of them.

Brown is bad but Clarke was a total baffoon. It was the incompetence of people like him that has made labour a joke. Browns incompetence was better hidden.

Roll on the Glenrothes by-election. Agree with #5 even if his cohorts don't get him we will!

There must have been a competition set for entrants to be a Labour minister e.g. gurning (winner Brown), stupidity (everyone equal), came out of a lucky bag (Harriet), etc.

I suspect there might be a general election sooner rather than later - could be why they are holding back the glenrothes by-election.

the fact that these concerns do not derive from ideology is why the labour party is dead.
and the attack on iraq - their party deserves to die for that.

Gods teeth. I've seen a few interviews now with this guy. I just don't know what to write.

I have always said i'm not the 'leave the tent type of person'. But if i had to share it with this guy, i would be nipping out for a little longer than five minutes.

Really sir cheer up and have a drink. Its not that bad.

Matt there,

Clarke's comments are the first of several that will come. Some from anger with Brown, others because they like Brown but do not want to see his place in history as "Mr Bean."
