A MANDATORY jail sentence for carrying a knife could soon be introduced across Britain under plans by both the UK and Scottish Governments to crack down on a spate of random attacks in recent weeks.
Gordon Brown has declared that ministers should take "any legislative measures" necessary to tackle knife crime, arguing that anyone over 16 caught with an illegal knife should be prosecuted.

He follows Alex Salmond, who said last week that an au
tomatic jail sentence for possession of a knife will be considered in Scotland as part of a criminal justice bill to be unveiled later this year.

With Tory leader David Cameron also demanding that there should be a "presumption" of jail for carrying a knife, the path now looks clear for a UK-wide crackdown on so-called "blade culture".

The moves come after a number of fatal and random attacks in recent weeks. Four men were stabbed to death in the same 24-hour period in London last week. Brown said: "The terrible stabbings that have occurred this week are shocking and tragic. We will continue to make absolutely clear that carrying a knife is unacceptable in our society."

In Scotland, ministers are under pressure to act, following the murder of Damian Muir, 34, who was stabbed to death last July in Greenock by a man on bail for four crimes, including two knife offences.

His family have lodged a petition with the Scottish Government, signed by 15,000 people, for a mandatory jail term.

Brown will unveil his own measures for England and Wales tomorrow, focusing on teenage men. The action plan, worked up over several months, will involve "parenting programmes targeted on areas with the most problems," he said last week.

Parents in England and Wales whose children behave badly will be put under more pressure to intervene.

North of the border, the Scottish Government is planning to set new national sentencing guidelines – overseen by a sentencing council – to ensure the judiciary are consistent.

A spokesman said yesterday: "Knife crime has blighted Scotland's communities for far too long and we are determined to tackle it.

"We will come forward with detailed proposals in the near future in the context of our proposed criminal justice bill."

At the Bite the Bullet conference in Brixton, south London, yesterday, the Rev Les Isaac said many young people felt they were "victims of their own circumstances".

He said youngsters were beset by family and community breakdown, negative peer pressure and an education system that failed to provide many students with the right opportunities.

Rev Isaac, of the Ascension Trust, an organisation that sends "street pastors" out on to the streets to work with young offenders, said: "Young people are angry. They are confused. They feel a tremendous sense of hopelessness.

"If we could go out and say to young people, 'you are worth something, we love you, we want to help', young people will look at their lifestyle and begin to rethink what they are doing."

The former north-London gang leader warned that the culture of knife crime could take 15 years to turn around.

As our prisons are already overcrowded and are releasing prisoners as quickly as they can, where exactly are we going to put all the thousands of knife carrying teenagers, more political rubbish from Brown, sounds great, totally unworkable

#1 - Exactly.

Sounds great but totally unworkable.

If the Government does not seriously commit itself to building many, many more prisons what we are going to see if this proposed 'mandatory jail sentence' goes through are serious, violent offenders given early release in order to make way for the hordes of other thugs charged with knife carrying.

No doubt the powers that be would have a field day with their crime statistics saying 'well we have locked-up X thousand knife offenders since the new law was passed', while conveniently sweeping under the carpet the actual figure of already incarcerated offenders who have been put out into the community to make way for knife carriers.

We need to BUILD MORE PRISONS - NOW.

I'm doing a bit of research into the subject of knife crime:

Will someone point me in the direction of, or provide, any statistics that illustrate any rise in knife crime, relative to the rise in population, over the last 10, or more, years? I've been scouring the internet and not found anything (yet!)

Thanks.

How times have changed. When I was a boy, the Scouts used to wear their sheath knives, or dangling pocket knives (usually ex-Army or ex-Navy issue from WW2)quite openly in the streets when they were in uniform, except for when they were on church parade. No one thought a thing about it! I wonder if they are even allowed them when they go camping, even backwoods style.

Well, Sorry to hear about your knife problem. We have a saying in Texas. "Never bring a knife to a gun fight". Our supreme court has finally told us what we already knew. United States citizens have the right to have firearms for their self protection. We can also carry a knife with a blade up to five and one half inches. So we don't have a knife problem. It's just so many knives which one to carry?
To bad your country has taken away your rights. It's a real shame since your country came up with the Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife. Thanks for that. I carry a folding version of it every day along with my .40 SIG. It seems like your real problem is your oppressive government. Why don't you vote them the "hell" out of office and take back your rights of self protection.

Does the government think that a mandatory sentence for carrying a knife is going to act as a deterrent? I'm sick and tired of saying it but prison is not the answer when you are not punishing anyone for their crimes.

Honestly, anyone can commit murder and get sent to prison and all they are going to lose is their liberty.

How can the tax paying public stomach the fact that every time a ned gets sent to prison he sees that as a reward? Getting to sit and watch tv all day at the tax payer's expense in a cell with an en suite toilet must surely beat having to wonder about the streets all day because their parents don't want them in the house.

Mandatory sentence for carrying a knife? They really haven't thought this through have they? I'd love to see how much the prison system is costing us just now. Maybe if we actually punished criminals, ie chain gangs or the birch then criminals might not commit crimes. They get two choices at every meal time!!! How is that a punishment?

As long as knife carrying criminals have nothing to fear by being sent to prison then there is no point introducing a mandatory sentence. Perhaps if they were sent to prison and forced to work all day, no tv and no en suite toilet and ten lashes from the birch every time they complained, then the promise of a mandatory sentence might have some effect. Until then stop coming up with stupid ideas that aren't going to have any effect.

Stay alive people, it's the only way to live

How many people must die before serious action is taken against these knife carrying plankton? Next step........... Mandatory factory working to produce items for export. No hanging around prisons costing the taxpayer money, but hard work and a contribution to the exchequer.

Stupid article - carrying a knife will automatically incur a prison sentence - what about Gamekeepers, Fishermen, Chefs - all who need knives to carry out their occupations!

*****

But how many more deaths before any wothwhile action is taken?

Presumably the mad Justice sysytem and its 'modus operandi' will still be applying what seems very similar to the supermarkets ploy of 'BOGOOF' - to those who admit their guilt - they wouldn't want to upset them or spoil their fun by having to pay full wack for their 'adventuresome' life!

You won't find anything showing an increase in knife crime, what you will find is an increase amongst young people/teenagers. Knife crime has remained steday but it has shifted to younger groups of people.

More police and more active enforcement of existing laws it what's required.

In view of Scotland's increasing reputation as the knife capital of Europe might I suggest you read an article http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20080712.GANG12/TPStory/
which appeared in one of Canada's most inflential newspapers yesterday. The reprecussions of such damning notoriety not only your country as a tourist destination but also it's ability to attract so called inward investement is immense.

5 years for carrying a knife,10 years for using one,and 30 years for using one for murder, and they will serve the full sentence you will not need any more jails, the idea of jail is that they should be afraid to commit a crime and go to jail,it should not be to watch telly play video games or snooker, the sentence given for crime should be the fear that stops the crime,if they are not afraid of the punishment they will commit the crime and do the time,to many liberals in the country with a namby pamby attitude to sentencing and turning jails into holiday camps and leisure pursuit establishmnets,

With our corrupt and dishonest Police?

Get ready for another spate of miscarriages of justice.

Only honesty about migrations effect on this country and which ethnic groups are behind these knife crimes can stop this problem.

Aren't knives and guns phallic symbols according to Freud?

Is that why some male persons in Scotland and England carry such long knives because of their manly shortcomings?

Where are they going to put them all?

Thought Kenny McAskill said the jails were full - or was that just an excuse to justify his soft touch policies?

Until punishment for knife carrying and knife using is dealt with by harsher sentences that deter anyone intent on carrying or using knives, the problem will only become greater.

I have to agree with some of the comments. Totally unworkable at present.

I wonder what the government is aiming at here ???

1. More money for their pockets?
2. Ratings?
3. More money and ratings?

I'll go with " #3 " they'll start investing public money into "privately" owned prison services "while being heavily "personally" stocked up in shares on the market into the individual companies. Like the privately owned hospitals that public money fund so they can compete with the NHS. Labour or Conservatives they are both rogues, over paid politicians that claim they understand the struggling familes while they claim for massive salaries and expenses.

My solution to the prison problems would be to stop imprisoning non council tax payers, and petity shop lifters along with tax avoiders. I'd then have plans for larger prisons, State owned. Yer, Prisons will no longer be a holiday camp. Prison couriers will also be much more strict and stated owned under the plans. How about execution, I'd like that to be brought back for murderers (Or life until death imprisonment).

Stop blaming the Knife!
It is innocent! It can do nothing by iself.

Blame the criminal who uses the knife to injure the innocent!

It isn't knives that kill people...it is people who kill people. Sounds as tho you have a problem with street rage there. Get to the root of the real problem, and knifings will slow down. Gangs, drinking, fighting, etc. Stop all that...Well, I believe in miracles after all.
