THE nephew of former Death Row prisoner Kenny Richey says his uncle has been left scared to leave his flat after pictures allegedly showed him snorting cocaine.
Ryan Smith said the 43-year-old was scared people would think he was a drug user after the photos appeared in a newspaper.

Mr Smith, 24, had been drinking with Richey on the night the photos were taken and backed up his uncle's claims that he was only pretending to take the Class A drug. He said:

"We were offered cocaine but didn't accept, but Kenny pretended to take some.

"A guy took a picture on his phone but said he deleted it."

Mr Smith, from Whitson Crescent, Saughton, added: "Kenny is afraid to leave the house because of what people might think. I'm not backing him because he's family – he really didn't do it."

Mr Smith admitted that his uncle had blown up to £2000 in a single night in casinos.

Richey has said the photos had left him on the brink of suicide.

I wish the EEN would stop reporting on this publicity-seeking simpleton. Who cares?

Personally, when I was released from Death Row I vowed never to bore people with my pathetic readjustments to society.

I am wondering here about the sensibility of Mr Smith.

Why would you admit you where in the same room as a class A drug?

There is not a quote here from Kenny so it seems to me that this is yet another person jumping on the news band wagon to get their name in the paper.

I thought some drugs leave a trace in the system for a while after taking them. If cocaine is one of them Mr R should arrange a test and once it proves his innocence he can sue!

On the other hand..... isn't paranoia one of the downsides of drug taking.......

As a US Senator discovered, you can't go into a gents cubicle, fondle an undercover policeman and then claim you're not gay.

There are just some things that people don't do "just for a lark".

Darren

Kenny Richey DID NOT murder anyone. The case was dropped because he was innocent of arson and murder.

Whatever you may think of Kenny Richey personally is fine but please get the facts correct.

Remember also that Richey did not have anything to do with this article, it was someone else.

I am not wrong Foo.

In the end, he was, in effect, blackmailed into securing his freedom by pleading no contest to three face-saving charges so local authorities could claim that he had been held responsible for the death of little Cynthia Collins, the daughter of his sometime-girlfriend.

Gone were capital counts of aggravated murder and arson, lamely replaced by charges that included attempted involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment, on the thin grounds that Richey had failed to look after the child for her mother on the night she died.

Strong though the thirst for vengeance may be on the part of the victim's family, "failure to baby-sit," as the bogus charge against Richey was termed, is no excuse for unjustly imprisoning a man for 21 years.

Indeed, it was the girl's mother who had the ultimate responsibility to ensure that she was cared for on that fateful night.

Do tell me how someone can ATTEMPT to do something INVOLUNTARTY because that is what the "charge" was.

While little Cynthia's mother actually pled Guilty to VOLUNTARTY Manslaughter and recieved 45 days in jail and 3 years probabtion.

Foo sorry to burst your bubble but the Wikpedia site has much wrong information and it has the charge wrong amongst other things.

It was ATTEMPTED INVOLUNTARY manslaughter he pled no contest to. So tell me how does someone attempt to do something involuntary?

Trumped up charges to save face and not pay compensation. The man is now free and struggling to get on with his life and todays story is utter rubbish.

well so what if he was taking cocaine, loads of decent people do it. Its only bad if your totally addicted to the stuff and lose everything, the casino bit is cool aswell, hes just been banged up for many years in a different country, he deserves to live abit while he adapts to the regular mans life again.

Foo # 30,

Nice to see someone knows the facts but, I have one simple quetion for you.

You are on death row and have refused a plea bargain to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter. You are then given a chance to make no contest to the same charge. That is, you don't challenge it and basically say nothing.
Do you
(a) Plead no contest and get released after 20 years inside

or

(b) Plead not guilty and potentially spend years, if not the rest of your life, in prison.

Honest answers please:0)

foo,

you are an ar*e of the highest order.
Have you not read anything on this case or can you just not read.
He was imprisoned on false charges and suffered a terrible injustice.
I don't see why people can't just leave the man alone to get on with it.

Mibbe we should introduce the death penalty in this country for crimes such as stupidity and ignorance.
Perhaps then we would be able to have debate without the lunacy that is spouted from certain sectors.

There are some simple facts in this case which a number of people continue to refuse to acknowledge.

The main fact is that Richey was found GUILTY of the last set of charges; he was NOT acquitted. He was not released as an innocent wronged man, but as a time-served criminal.

It is a disgusting and immoral thing for his supporters to claim otherwise.

Foo. I'm afraid you are wrong. Kenny Richie NEVER admited starting the fire and the charges were brought by corrupt and lieing police. The police were later investigated for perjury and most of their "evidence" was seen as insecure. #31 Julien makes the point very sucsinctly, well said.
42

P Phillips,

UK 11/04/2008 21:27:51
It'd have been better in the long run if maybe he'd gone through a retrial and if found not guilty and then he could've returned to bonny Scotland as an innocent man and would consequently be less of a target for some of you lot. But if you'd been in jail for 21 years then if you were offered such a plea bargain wouldn't you take it? Note also that he has refused previous plea bargains that would've seen him out of jail 10 years ago.
None of you making these vituperative comments can possibly imagine what he's been through and in any event - whether he's guilty or not- 21 years is a hefty sentence. Murderers and paedos get freed after far shorter terms than he served, so why not direct your anger towards them instead of him, esp given his unproven guilt. And Julian, for the umpteenth time, he NEVER admitted starting that fire.
Establish facts please before commenting.

Your first paragraph started so promisingly; if lacking grammatical sense re syntax.

I do, however, wonder if you had used a thesaurus to find the word 'vituperative'. Such a term is rarely utilised by the masses - well done.

Naturally, your level of intellect is quite apparent when you state:

"...Murderers and paedos get freed after far shorter terms than he served, so why not direct your anger towards them..."

Your failure to cite a case in question, indeed your effort to make comparison between differing crimes (under varying jurisdiction) is simply nonsensical.

#41 Biker

And I have the pleasure of quoting:

"Foo. I'm afraid you are wrong. Kenny Richie NEVER admited starting the fire and the charges were brought by corrupt and lieing police. The police were later investigated for perjury and most of their "evidence" was seen as insecure. #31 Julien makes the point very sucsinctly, well said."

i/ Is 'Foo' a word?
ii/ 'admited' is spelt admitted
iii/ 'lieing' is spelt lying
iv/ 'sucsinctly' is spelt succinctly

Who is interested if he admitted starting the fire or not? He was found guilty.
The very fact that the police were investigated shows the transparency and limpidity of the US judicial system.

The only reason this simpleton is still alive is because such systems are overly just. It is a sad indictment on the US justice system that such a callous liar is still walking the streets. I am quite sure that it won't be long before we are informed of far worse stories than 'Richey photographed with cocaine' or 'Richey loses a grand in an evenings casino play'. He is bound to transgress before long.

The two names above are examples of the kind of people supporting this murderer: I for one would rather place my faith with the fair and just US judicial system.
