THE churches in Scotland are “going to hell in a handbasket” as the old saying goes. The stem cell issue raised a very important fact by default last week. Suddenly, advancing scientific technology was held over a barrel by the Church.
Politics suddenly became religious.

Politics and religion should remain separate. Politicians represent constituents of all races, religions and creeds. Their policies should reflect that, not their ability to appease their own chosen God.

The flawed logic of Janey Godley, which presumes to extrapolate from the contacts list on her mobile phone, to the demise of Christianity, made me shake my head in sadness. By contrast, of the 52 people on my contacts list, 42 are regular church goers and 10 never go to church. What conclusions should I draw from that? Only this, that Janey needs to widen her circle of friends, if she wants to get a real sense of what's happening in the world of belief.

If Jane is genuine about "wishing to have this faith" - she can. Faith is not a mysterious, magical gift bestowed from on high. If she wants it, she can have it. Or is she content to deride something she hasn't even tried out for herself? And impose her derision on others?

Ermm... well I'm only 18 and I regularly go to Church and I know a goodly number my age who also go. In fact, I know a lot of young people who realise that being atheist no longer symbolises "rebellion" and realise that the world without God is a very sad and pointless one indeed. To those atheists who say their views are based on rational observations of the world, I am still held in disbelief that their conclusion is a godless one. Look at the wonders around you of the simple mechanics of your eyes to the way that flowers convert energy from the sun. If you think this is all by chance, I assume you play the lottery, as those chances are about 1 billion (British billion!) times less than that of our universe occuring by coincidences. And that's my two pence.

The point about stem cell research is that the use of human ova (eggs) has all but dried up. After going through between two to three million unfertilised female gametes the scientists had to find another source which were animal ova.

The second point is that the cell research has yielded very few results if any at this stage.

Unlike many politicians the Church has not lost its concern for humanity and it may be excused for a "knee jerk" reaction to the concept of mixing human and animal gametes to produce "stem cells". Before the wonders of modern genetic science some people used race eugenics to achieve what was in their eyes a desirable gaol.

They were lead by a powerful leader with total control over their expected scientific output.
The leader's name was ADOLF HITLER
