Vettriano painting sells for nearly £500,000 at auction

A PAINTING by the popular artist Jack Vettriano fetched almost £500,000 at auction last night.
Bluebird at Bonneville was the top lot at Sotheby's sale of Scottish pictures at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire.

The painting was one of seven commissioned in 1997 by Sir Terence Conran, the London restaurateur and designer, for his Bluebird Club in Chelsea.

They are inspired by the celebrated Bluebird cars driven by the world-renowned racing motorist Sir Malcolm Campbell when he set nine land speed records in the 1920s and 30s.

Bluebird at Bonneville was sold for £468,000, Sotheby's said. Vettriano, right, who is from Fife, is one of the UK's most commercially successful artists.

Jack Nicholson, Madonna and Sir Alex Ferguson are said to be among his fans.

The self-taught painter made history in 2004 when his most iconic image, The Singing Butler, was sold for £744,500 - the highest price ever paid for a Scottish painting at auction.

At the weekend, he revealed that he received just £1,000 when the work was first sold. The Singing Butler and Mad Dogs, also by Vettriano, are the best-selling posters in Britain, according to Sotheby's.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder, and the Scottish Art establishment really needs to get their's tested.

Vettriano's work is right up there with the best of Scotland.

I wonder if it will take him to die, before his work will be "recognised" by Scotland's art snobs?

I used to be on Vettriano's side until I realised it was all pretty much painting by numbers.

As I said before you seem bitter which is sad.

I am sure Jack may have done painting by numbers like we all did when we were 5 years old, but how you can make such an childish comment about his work is ignorant. Why would educated people for example Sir Tim Rice and Sir Terrance Conran buy his work if he were not a great talent! I am sure they would not agree with your description of his work. Oh and I wonder if you are as successful as these two individuals.

Do remember that Jack Vettriano was not the owner of the painting the sold for £468,000. He sold it himself for £1,000.

Selling the original paintings though is not the big money-spinner for the artist. There is far more money made from poster and greeting card licencing.

I have nothing against Vettriano as a man, and fair play to any working class boy made good.

However, as everyone now knows, he has been lifting his ideas directly out of "How To...." books.

As for why Rice and Conran have bought his work, could it be the fact that they recognise an investement when they see one?

And as for being successful, yes I am rather, thank you!!

Why can you not drop the painting by numbers nonsense. Have a good look at his work. I think this "working class boy made good" attitude is so condesending. He is a a great artist thats it. If you dont like it fair enough, but dont insult the people who do by making such rash statements.

I cant undestand why people have to be so nasty.

Yes I am sure they recognise a good invesment,
but they also admire his work.

Just look at the criticism Vettriano, Andy Murray and Billy Connelly get!!!!! It's purely people that are green with envy, that feel the need to denigrate their fellow successful countrymen!!

No it is not his mother I think perhaps it is someone who enjoys his work. Nothing wrong with that!

Are you a failed artist? Are you bitter? If you dont like his work fair enough but the fact you get so personnel worries me. Relax and go look at a Monet.Forget JackV dont stress about it!

Also, you do get up early to make such sarcastic comments. Get a hobby dont worry about what you see as his lack of talent. I am sure he does not care.
