Surprise as China gives IAEA secrets of Iran's nuclear work

Published Date: 03 April 2008
CHINA, which has opposed harsh United Nations sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme, has provided the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with intelligence linked to Tehran's alleged attempts to make nuclear arms, it was revealed yesterday.
The move would appear to reflect growing international unease about how honest Iran has been in denying it ever tried to make such arms.

The development was revealed by two senior diplomats who have closely followed the IAEA's investigation of Ir
an's nuclear programme.

They said Beijing was the most surprising entry on a fairly substantial list of nations recently forwarding information to the agency. Several other countries not normally considered to be in the anti-Iran camp had also done so in the past few weeks.

The diplomats – who did not want to be named because their information was confidential – declined to identify other individual nations. But they attributed a generally increased flow of information to the UN nuclear watchdog to concerns sparked by a presentation to the 35 IAEA board members in February about intelligence previously forwarded by member states on Iran's alleged clandestine nuclear arms programme.

John Bolton, a former United States ambassador to the UN and before that the under-secretary in charge of the Iran nuclear dossier, said any such Chinese move would be "potentially significant" because of Beijing's former military ties to Tehran.

He said the US believed the Chinese had helped Iran develop its nuclear programme, particularly in one area of uranium enrichment, "plus they had co- operation on ballistic missile programmes as well".

One of the diplomats said the IAEA was also on the lookout for misleading information, passed on either inadvertently or in attempts to implicate Iran falsely. One example, he said, was a document showing experiments with implosion technology that can be used to detonate a nuclear device. While the paper seemed genuine, it was unclear whether it had originated from Iran.

A US intelligence estimate last year said Tehran worked on nuclear weapons programmes until 2003, while Israel and other nations say such work continued past that date.

Not really a surprise. China has its own increasingly restive Muslim population, and it must have grave reservations about the pro-jihadi Republic of Iran having access to nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons/devices it could hand out to the followers of the prophet in Western China, for example.

It'll take a lot more than this to convince me that the despotic pariah regime in China has a conscience.

Your wording sounds like China is the mature, reasonable party and the West is missing the big picture.

The headline in the story that follows this one begins:

"CHINESE authorities have confirmed a protest in a troubled Muslim region in western China last month,"

I suppose you could call this pragmatism.

far too little far too late...

I agree....

correct me if I am wrong though... arent you on the "iran appeaser" list? saying over and over how wrong the US administration was for villifying Iran and their supposedly phantom nuclear weapons program??

or do I have you confused with somebody else?

I don't care if Iran has nuclear weapons. They are completely surrounded by American, Israeli, Pakistani and Russian nukes. They have every right to have a nuclear deterrent. They are certainly no crazier than Israel and the United States.

Suicide is a proven, and approved, method of working for Islamic goals.

If an Iranian built nuke was smuggled into the US and Denver was nuked, do you think that it would be appropriate to destroy Iran - especially since it would be so hard to prove WHOSE nuke it was?

Wouldn't you think that deterrence is better than retaliation?

Some people simply live in the " Cookoo Land " , while others are basically appeasers and cronies.

so johnny boy...

Iran having nuclear weapons is NOT a nuclear deterrent... the entire concept of deterrent is "I know what you have, what it can do, and that if I cross this agreed upon line, you will use them on me, and I am not willing to accept those consequences" Iran's track record and rhetoric puts that line somewhere between your front door and your bedroom.... (please READ THEIR CONSTITUTION... pay SPECIAL ATTENTION to articles 13-16 and 69)... and that puts it in the same place for me... a line placement I am not willing to accept...

it is not even "detente"... an uneasy peace.... they support terrorism... which by SANE definition is an undeclared war....

Iran has an undisputable PROVEN track record of not behaving by internationally accepted standards.... (citation? 1979 Iranian hostage crisis...) by those internationally accepted standards, an embassy is foreign soil, unassailable... ejecting personnell, closing the embassy, and severing diplomatic ties is their right... taking those personnell hostage, is an act of war... one carter lacked the intestinal fortitude to prosecute... and a MAJOR factor in why we are where we are today. If we EVER had a reason to invade Iran THAT was it... thankfully THAT particular crisis is long over... now our concern is their proven propensity to support terrorism throughout the region and their stated support throughout the world... couple THAT with nuclear weaponry, and you have a recipe for disaster...

eventually Iran will set the price, we dont know WHAT that price will be.... the question is not IF you want to pay that price, we WILL pay, the question is WHEN you want to pay the price... today, when the threat is a mere whelp... or tomorrow, when it has become a full fledged fire breathing dragon... tomorrow we will pay that price with interest.... appeasement is putting off paying until tomorrow, in hopes that Iran will make the price FREE... its a noble hope, one we al

its a noble hope, one we all pray for... but Iran just doesnt have the track record to vest that hope...

I'm not at all easy with Pakistan posessing nukes... I believe Musharif staged his coup based partly on radical elements within their elected government rising to power and then having access to this technology.... I have never been comfortable with Musharif either, but purely in a nuclear context, I can accept that as a reason to support his path to power.... Pakistan having nuclear weapons has established "detente" with India.... I fear what will happen if radicals take over a nuclear country...

Radical muslims have no problem strapping small bombs to themselves and setting them off. Who on this earth believes they wouldn't do the same with a BIG bomb?

Get real.

John, IF Israel and the US were as crazy as you said...with all THEIR problems..there would have been countries nuked a long time ago.
Yet both countries have not used THEIR nukes (providing Israel has them)..would you trust that Iran will NOT?
Southrn Gent is right...Get Real.
