THE operators of the Cairngorm funicular railway could be taken over by the Highlands' development agency to help plans for the attraction to be expanded.
It is understood talks are going on between CairnGorm Mountain Ltd and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) but are at an early stage. The matter will be discussed in private by Highland Council tomorrow.

The company has a vision to diversify from winter skiing and develop a reputation as a centre for the mountain environment which would make it a leader in education and sustainability. Substantial investment would be needed and it is understood one option being considered is that HIE takes it over.

A CairnGorm spokesman said last night: "Although we have had a great winter season, we need to diversify our activities to become less reliant on skiing. We are working with HIE to see if we can get ourselves in a position where this might be possible."

"Substantial investment"

Just how much more public money is it proposed will be thrown at this area?

£20 million of public money for the funicular because not a single private investor was interested. CairnGorm Mountain Ltd allowed by HIE to pay a low non-commercial rent for the area and its buildings and infrastructure. And yet the company still cannot turn a profit and is several million pounds in debt.

Well done HIE! Why don't you go down to the knackers yard and get yourselves a pile of dead horses to flog. At least it would keep you from pursuing yet another financial disaster at our expense.

Well said Slioch...Ever heard of enterprise zone? Private money/encouraged by government...ie..Tax break...to assist in job creation/infrastructure/Recreation/Innovation
Beauty is in the eye of beholder..but if no one gets to see the view...where is the benefit?
