Tories launch campaign against 'ineffective' ID cards

THE Scottish Tories yesterday launched a campaign against identity cards, denouncing them as costly, ineffective and an invasion of privacy.
Their leader, Annabel Goldie, said:

"Despite what Gordon Brown and the Labour government says, ID cards won't stop terrorist attacks and won't prevent identity fraud.

"Hard-working Scots will each have to fork out almost £100 for this total invasion of privacy. And on top of that, they will have to travel to a biometric scan centre in order to have their biometrics taken."

The Conservatives also claim the UK government is planning to "blackmail" students into having ID cards to access loans and bank accounts.

A leaked Home Office paper showed young people would be targeted from 2010 – the date originally set for the extension of the scheme to anyone renewing a passport. That is thought to have been put back to 2012.

However, the report said the "first priority" was to issue ID cards from next year to those in positions of trust, with airport workers singled out for specific attention.

A spokesman for the Identity and Passport Service said: "We will begin issuing ID cards for foreign nationals this year and the first ID cards for British citizens in 2009."

The Stalinist led New Labour Sleaze and Corruption Party seem determined to go ahead with this nonsense. Not only is it yet another invasion on our privacy, it is yet another attack on our rights.

Apart from the cost (I have heard it being reported as £300, not £100), just how do they expect the elderly and infirm to be able to travel to one of their "scan centres"? In addition, for people from remote areas, this would probably involve at least one overnight stay. Who is going to pay for that?

Do these totalitarian control freaks really believe that their ID cards will prevent terrorism? Apart from potential terrorists already living in this country, and who would be supplied such ID cards by the government, do they think that terrorists are so backward that they are not capable of forging their own ID cards?

Then, of course, given their track record, how long is it going to take for all the personal details of people to be lost, stolen or sold? This is an important issue when it is considered that the control freaks even want to give local councils access to the data, as well as to a large assortment of government agencies.

The money might be better spent giving our old age pensioners a better deal, and a pension approaching that given to people in most of the European countries.

With a bit of luck, Maggie Broon and his Stalinist, totalitarian control freaks will be given the boot before they can force this farcical farrago on us all.

#1. Agreed and well said.
I'd add to it, that one of the problems is that the jerrymandering tactics of the Labour party have invited people into the British isles who support this kind of thing as they come from countries where ID cards are in everyday use. I've not yet met a foreigner who doesn't find the lack of a British ID card as a bit odd. That continental attitude (and its not only Europeans), encouraged by a generally fascist or communist background, is what counts with the bliar and borwn's gang.

When I was a wee boy in school just after WWII our teachers warned us that ID Cards was a continental phenomena that indicated people there were not free. Beware, they told us, of ID Cards!

The only thing an ID card will do is give folk another peice of plastic to chop their ching.

If you don't have it on you what happens?

They are already taking biometrics for their visas from overseas students coming to study in the UK.

The politics of fear - vote them out now, they are beginning to get scary as well as being incompetent.

Well said most of you. I will go to jail before I give in to these people. Given their past recent history on keeping information safe, I think they should be hiding rather than mentioning ID cards.

whats the use of an id card if they can be cloned that just makes it easier to get in this country and rob rape and blows us up dont the tories remember their immigration minister keith vas getting them for his family and friends anyone out there want to know how to get benifits a passport con the tax credits system just go into your local shop because take it from me they know exactly how to abuse our system

You've just demonstrated how inaccurate records can be and the danger of allowing little administrative brats to have access to and the ability to create them. I'm not sure what your record source is, but none of the above are "old women", we're all eunochs.

ID Cards are not the solution to identity fraud .
No system can be totally fool proof.
All systems cost money and are 'invasions of privacy'

However most opposition to ID cards seems to be 'emotionally' based and remind me of the 'I don't want to be a number'20th century when we all are recognised by unique numbers as soon as we 'join' any system.
ID Cards WILL bring a improved security and WILL provide better protection than we have at the moment.
And if they halt the enormous health social security benefits and illegasl immigration then IO'm all for them.
