Published Date: 07 October 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen has revealed he's already eyeing up signing targets for the January transfer window, having been given the green light by the Easter Road board to further strengthen his side.
Since succeeding John Collins as manager ten months ago, Paatelainen has brought in ten new players, three within weeks of becoming boss and seven more over the summer, culminating in the return of fans' favourite Derek Riordan.

The £400,000 paid out to capture Riordan, who has scored three goals in four games, was, chief executive Scott Lindsay told the shareholders annual meeting, a "statement of intent".

And that intent, Paatelainen revealed, has extended to a commitment to support him in his efforts to bring further new faces to the club at the start of next year, his priorities being a new goalkeeper, a playmaker and someone to patrol the right flank.

He said: "I am always looking to strengthen the squad and I'm glad to say that once again the board has indicated there will be the chance to improve again come January.

"I'm already looking to identify some players."

Paatelainen confirmed a new goalkeeper remained his No.1 aim with Moroccan star Khalid Sinouh, who has been on trial with Hibs for the past week, set to feature in Thursday's closed-doors match against Livingston.

But he insisted such a move wouldn't signal the end for either Yves Ma-Kalambay or Andy McNeil, the current rivals for the gloves, insisting he was looking to step up competition for that position.

He said: "At the moment, we have two very good goalkeepers who I feel have been wrongly criticised as not being good enough for the SPL. I disagree with that totally. We have had loads of trialists in and I have not seen a better goalkeeper and that's an indication our goalkeepers are not bad."

And, although he has a wealth of midfield talent at his disposal, Paatelainen admitted to last night's meeting he believes Hibs hadn't adequately replaced French ace Guillaume Beuzelin, who opted to quit Edinburgh for Coventry at the end of his contract.

He said: "When Boozy left I felt we did not quite replace him. We really need someone who can take his time on the ball, someone who has good enough awareness, vision and the ability to pass the ball. Unfortunately, Boozy wanted a new challenge and is no longer here but that is a position I feel we need to strengthen.

"I also think we need someone on the right-hand side to give us options to play a different system. But we are working on that front and I am delighted to say we are again in the position to strengthen and will do so."

Paatelainen was challenged by one supporter as to his input when players departed the club, insisting he had the final say as he cited the example of David Murphy, who left for Birmingham City in a £1.5 million deal at the start of the year.

He said: "There was a lot of money on the table for his services, the board and the chairman (Rod Petrie] in particular asked me if I wanted to keep him or sell him.

"I decided because the player was so unhappy and wanted a new challenge to go down south to the English Premiership I didn't want to stop his progress so I thought it better for club and player that he went.

"But I do have the say whether a player stays or goes."

Lindsay backed Paatelainen's assertion that he'd be given every support to continue shaping the squad to his satisfaction telling the shareholders the latest set of accounts, which ran to July 31, didn't quite tell the full story of the club's transfer dealings.

He said: "Over the last few years, the club has gradually increased the football budget and, since Mixu took over, has been able to support him but the 2007/08 figures don't quite tell the full story with the last few hours of the August transfer window producing real drama.

"Brian Kerr and Martin Canning left, Sol Bamba joined up and Derek Riordan came home, the bold move seen by some as a statement of intent. It is. We want to compete, to win and we will support Mixu as he strives for the success we all want."

Loving it, over confident Hobo's my favourite type. Cause the Jambos are good at spoiling the Party and have been party poopers numerous times over the years. So yeah bring on the derby from what I hear we will dominate midfield and our robust and silky midfield 5 will over run your tiny diamond configuration. So yipee bring it on, can't wait to win at the stickle brick arena 27 quid well spent.

We will see lads, yes "Silky and Robust midfield" you know that has chipped in with vital goals that have seen us be the most improved team compared to last season. Watch out hobos we will be 3rd after the derby have no fear the Jambo's will be well up for this one. Mixu yet to win against a team in the top six - What does that say ? Have you even scored against a big team under Mixu ?

Dood Warchest diverted to help with current financial crisis that is gripping the world economy, have no fear it will still be used at the correct time.

is that the same midfield diamond formation we used up at aberdeen then?

oh wait, we changed our tactics didn't we? and we can change them again to make your 'silky midfield 5' look like the bunch of amateurs they really are, while deeks slots home a couple to rub the salt into the gaping wound left by the administrators as they slash spending and disect your team.

aye, your team dinnae give a flying fellatio about the derby cos they're just in it for the money... and when that money runs dry there is nothing left to play for and you know it. our team on the other hand consists of homegrown die hard hibbies will give 110% the whole game.

Old Rolly boy has a point, like it or not. With respect, I`ll disregard how Hearts will form up in midfield, (or any other team for that matter) the fact is that we will likely deploy a shape that will LOSE the `battle` for sure. Perhaps I`m being unreasonable in that Mixu appears to have recognised how ineffective Shiels and Keenan were in there and the return of Thicot and Rankin may have improved things but no matter what or whom, the `diamond` don`t work and we`ll all recognise that, believe me, if results don`t go our way. Isn`t it funny how a win result can mask performance at a stroke ????

"our team on the other hand consists of homegrown die hard hibbies "

So that will be Bamba, Thickot, Maka, Nish, Morais, Keenan, Jones, Hogg... any other 1st team players homegrown ?
14

Rolland,

#11 "homegrown die hard hibbies" Don't make me laugh ejit.

Can you name them ? Don't think Makapacka had heard of you lot, or Bambi or Thicot, and Dean Shiels grew up supporting Hibs did he.

So you've got us going in to Administration again.... give it up lads its so sad you cling to this myth of Hearts going out the box so you can be the top team in Edinburgh, sad very sad indeed. It aint going to happen and our midfield will be up for it with our homegrown die hard Jambo Mikey Stewart to take the hobo midfield to bits.
15

Ayegudyin,

07/10/2008 12:26:37
13

fair enought they may not be homegrown... however, nish is a diehard hibbie, morais won't be playing, and look at the ones who will:

riordan - homegrown die hard hibbie who you are all sh'ttin yourselves about - dont lie now...

fletcher - may support liverpool but he is one of the best strikers in scotland and homegrown - and you can guarantee he'll be out there for hibs.

Murray - die hard homegrown hibbie who has the ability to make your midfield look like schoolboys

compare that to the hearts squad and you might as well not bother showing up

Is that the same Michael Stewart that used to play for a Big Team (a proper big team, not a pretendy wee one that wins 3 cups per century)?

Or is it the same Michael Stewart who used to play good football in a Flair Team?

Or the same Michael Stewart who went to see an employment lawyer 2 weeks ago (you heard it here first)

Cue dressing room discontent any time soon...

Sorry Rolland you'll have to eat your words on that one. Out of last seasons top six we have so far beaten both Dundee Utd and Aberdeen this season. Of that two Dundee United are currently in the top six. How many did you beat the Arabs by a week or two ago? I think you need to choose your words with a little more care.

As for the derby no predictions from me. Both teams are pretty poorly just now so it'll be down to whichever plays better on the day and/or has luck on their side.
25

Rolland,

07/10/2008 13:44:10
Ok just for Iain - You've never beaten a team occupying a top six slot under Mixu, how many have you scored in the big games against Rangers, Celtic & Hearts ? Result have been poor that is all I was saying you used to put up a challenge not under Mixu. How many did you lot score against Motherwell ? Killie also beat you this season so your points are a little bit off I would say.

Jasbar,

Yeah, but most of us said this before the end of the transfer window, and we're not managers.

If we could see it then, why should we be impressed by Mixu saying it now?

Anyway, better late than never I suppose.

Derbies have nothing to do with form. They are about the team that wants it most. And that's ususally down to the manager motivating his players. That's why it usually turns out that managers have either a great or poor record against his local opponent.

How hungry is Mixu? How good is he at motivating players?

We're about to see very shortly.

30

Rolland,

07/10/2008 14:00:01
#28 Well the only time Hearts have played Mixu's lot it ended with all three points going to the JT's. Hearts winning the game 1 - 0 thanks in a large part to your Keeper fumbling about on his line.

Took 4 off Rangers in 1 game last season, beat Celtic on there own patch so for a team finishing bottom 6 and without a manager not to badly I think you'll find.

What exactly do you mean by 'top six' teams? Do you mean teams that currently occupy top 6 or finished in the top six last season?
Either way there are 3 teams Hibs have a poor record against under Mixu: Rangers, Celtic and Motherwell ie last years top 3. Fairly self-evident that most teams did not have great records against these teams last year. There has only been one derby and that was Mixu's 1st league game so it's a bit early to tell on that one. Up and coming derby represents a good opportunity to rectify this. Record against other teams is fine, the continuation of which would give Hibs realistic chance of a successful season.
32

Iain Bhern,

07/10/2008 14:02:44
#25, "Killie also beat you" aye so they did but at least it wasn't at home. You are being pedantic though. You asked a straight forward question and you got your answer. It's far too early in the season to be talking about top six. Right now Hearts are only two points away from being eighth and potentially Aberdeen who are currently bottom are only two games away from being third. Why not try being constructive rather than trying to score points against others on the forum, for one thing people might actually start to respect you rather than thinking you are a fool!

You have just lost your last 2 games to Dun Utd and Killie at home. In no position to be boasting!

You'll note I haven't made any idle boasts about how good or bad Hibs are or made any claims about our league position after the derby, I've just answered your questions. So far only one of us can be made to look foolish after the derby and it isn't me!
38

Rolland,

07/10/2008 14:37:28
Lenny, me old sparring partner, how are you old fool, I'm rather full after my lunch. As for top six / bottom six, of course not. Just pointing out your failure (or rather Mixu's ) to obtain a result in these games. Kinda like your bottle goes where as under Mowbray / Collins a fight was always put up. Could be the diff on derby day.

Iain - Nope we can all look foolish after the derby.

Can I go and worry about Hearts impending demise now ?

#38 Check it out Rolland and our old friend Vic will back me up on this one. I have 'never' said Hearts would go out of business and indeed I pointed out last year that Hearts were in the same position that Real Madrid were in (Real still are btw), more so in the current climate. Real's bankers can never foreclose on the debt because it can never be repaid, it's too high. Calling in the loan would actually bankrupt the bank!
41

SouthSideHibs,

07/10/2008 15:02:38
Jeezo - Mixu's thinking about strengthening the side and we have 30 odd posts giving old Rollie a pasting.

I'm concerned about giving him any more money right now. He's signed players and hasn't used them yet (Yantorno) - signed other players and got rid of them already (Zarabi) signed players who don't look up to much (DVZ and Rankin in my opinion) and players who look out of their depth - Joe Weeman, again in my opinion, whilst letting Zemamma go to to the UAE - which still has the whiff of off-loading a wage and I know there were/are personal reasons, but I was very disappointed to see him leave, albeit on loan.

No-one like this diamond midfield but we seem to be lacking a good right sided, right-footed player. And we have no-one who can really play centre mid. We also have vacancies at both full-backs and goal-keeper too (we've had this for 5+ years). I wonder what his thoughts are and who he's looking at?

For me the biggest thing is quality not quantity.
42

Lenny,

07/10/2008 15:03:04
Rolland,

I am very well old chap, how are you?

Yes, admittedly Mixu records against the Old Firm and Hearts is not great, but he has not exactly been long in the job. I will point out that yes, we beat Rangers quite regular over the past cpl of seasons. However, they were def a weaker team then. Thus how you guys managed to finish 2nd that one season.... : )

Rangers are stronger now, granted, just seems the spirit isn't in the hibs team now that once was. I know some layers have left, I jut think the spirit of the team is something the manager can influence and use to his advantage, but Mixu doesn't appear to be able to get this.

As for the attendance on Saturday about 3K tickets were handed out as freebes, many people boycotted ST in protest at Romanov, there you go. Interesting what was the attendance via the Rangers, would anyone like to compare averages for the season thus far, will you sell all your tickets for a week on Sunday ?

#41 South Side. You make some very valid points. Every Manager is responsible for settling his side, finding out his best team or as near to and as quickly as possible. I would doubt many of us would concur when it comes down to Hibs strongest 11 and, as you say, here we are talking about strengthening the squad. That`s all very well but what of where we are NOW? We are well into the season and I don`t think we`ve played the same team twice albeit there are very valid reasons for not doing so at times. Like you, I believe Yantorno will prove to be an asset and perhaps there`s no pressure on signings other than the obvious and long term goalkeeping issue. Thicot may also prove to be a player and if so I suggest Hibs are not too far off being a reasonable team. Opinions will vary on who/what we need but as you suggest, some clear thinking is required.
